You might wanna try and see if your vet will give you a prescription for pH food from Royal Canaan or Hill science diet that has no dyes in it. When I worked as a vet tech, we had a running joke that when a client came in with a Westie puppy, their “new puppy gift bag” had the contact information for the local veterinary dermatology specialist. In 20+ years of that career, I only met ONE Westie that didn’t have horrible allergies.

My Westie had horrible allergies and when he was 13 years old I met another Westie owner who suggested using Original Ivory Dish soap... (her dog was perfect) I did and for the rest of his life he was so happy! His skin healed, no itching... I wish I'd had known sooner. Soapy water (not straight shampoo) and rinse well. My folks had a Westie. I would stay with her when they would go out of town. I would take her for walks around the neighborhood. Several times I would hear from a distance "Hi Angel".... walk some more..." Hi Angel" ...........walk some more "Bob, it's Angel, come out and say hi to her"... on and on. It was like I was walking a celebrity. It's been 20 years and my dad still talks so fondly about her.

Personally, I think there are several factors as to why Vanessa has success with these difficult to groom dogs. The love, care, respect and compassion she shows towards these animals is wonderful. Her first priority is for the safety and wellbeing of the animals. The fact that she is able to groom in an isolated environment without all the other noises and distractions found in grooming salon goes a long way towards the comfort of these nervous and often physically challenged dogs. Bless you and thank you for all the incredible work that you do.

Dogs are also, like children, great at reading human body language and emotion, both by tension and smell. If the groomer is relaxed and shows no fear of them but also that they are going to be no nonsense without being aggressive, most dogs will behave.

I think so, too. Dogs, unless completely unhinged by fear in the moment, are generally very good at reading people and their intentions. She has perfected her touch, too. Gentle but not tentative and firm enough to inspire confidence. It's clear she has a plan and knows what's she doing which helps dogs relax in the feeling of safety. She just communicates nonverbally that her intention is to do what needs to be done *for them* with an encouraging and familiar "good boy" tossed in here and there.
@mimsredjelly
@mimsredjelly 20 күн бұрын
I never thought about it that way before but the fact that she only ever has one animal or family group in the salon at a time is probably a huge factor in keeping the problematic ones calm.

He wasn’t happy about giving up his beef chews, but after being on this diet he is now completely off of his allergy medication and his licking has stopped. He also lets me groom him without hesitation. He’s a really good dog!☺️

Saying that my westie was difficult to groom is an understatement. I think a groomer was rough with him (long story, but I didn't witness it) when he was about a year old, and he was a different dog after that day. I've always felt guilty for taking him to her, but the comments under this video are helping me forgive myself a little. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who had trouble.

We had a cross Westie/Maltese. He displayed everything that Dougie did. I was smiling, you are patience personified with lots of reassuring “good boy” in a calming tone. Ours was on allergy tablets, licked his paws constantly. He was feisty. No groomer would touch him, so I had to invest in a Wahl clipper some decent scissors and do him myself. This we managed, we got along quite well, up to a point, but it had to be done in stages. I divided his body into quarters, and then did his head. Including the wash, it took almost a week to groom him. Didn’t like his paws or butt being touched. He wouldn’t have won any dog shows, we came to a compromise, each of us understood. Other than that he was a good dog. I miss him, he passed to doggie heaven 12 Jan this year. Watching you groom Dougie brought back so many memories, even to the gold in his coat along his back. I wish your videos had been around earlier, I could have learned so much, instead it was definitely through trial and error. 😊

A TIP FOR LICKING PAWS..an old vet gave me this advice for my yorkie betty boop who drove me nuts licking her paws..he said all the meds do is stop the licking for a time but as meds come out of system they start licking again so back for repeat prescriptions.... He said feed her the yoke of egg twice a week (Dont give the white part though) and the good bacteria it puts into guts stop the allegies forming that makes them lick paws. Shes now 9 and over the years whenever ive forgotten or not done it for a while then the licking comes back! Its just a healthier way of prevention than being on allergy meds for life .hope this helps someone as this advice was a God send to me !

Our otterhound mix was allergic to wheat / gluten, too, especially as she got older. Trying to find a kibble for her that _didn't_ have wheat or corn as the first ingredient back in the 00s was a heck of a challenge, but she got to enjoy a wide variety of flavors due to the "If we're gonna track it down, we're at least gonna make it interesting" mindset I got as a teen. I used my money from working as a Spoil the Pup fund and would take her with me to stores to pick out new kibble to try. Her allergies cleared up almost immediately after stopping with the Wheat Filler Kibbles, and she loved the variety. She actually had a favorite after a while and would put her paw on the bag to let me know that's what she wanted.

@Wisepati
@Wisepati 20 күн бұрын
That makes sense. Dogs digestive systems weren't set up originally to eat grain. I think the only reason they do is because they have been so long associated with humans. But they have no amylase in their saliva which is what starts the digestion of carbohydrates. My dogs do very well on a grain-free diet.

My parents had to put down their 16 year old Westie a couple of years ago. For most of her life, she had a really lovely beautiful white coat that didn't show the characteristic tan stripe down the back, and very few issues with allergies except for inside her ears. She would get yeast infections in her ears almost constantly until we switched her to a brand of dog food that didn't contain any brewer's yeast (a common filler ingredient in dry food). As she got older, though, her skin definitely flared up-her whole belly turned black just like how Doogie's is in this video and she would lick her paws raw. She also started having vision and incontinence issues and the doggie equivalent of Sundowners (likely due to the vision loss). Eventually, my parents decided that the kindest thing they could do was to let her go. She had lived a full and beautiful life, and even outlived her sister by several years. I love you my sweet Lilly-bug, and I know you're waiting OTRB for us.

Food will do that. I have a rotty that one time when he was younger got an ear infection that would not stop. They treated him with the time release med in his ear three different times. At the time of the third treatment I ran out of the bargain brand turkey cat food I had been putting a spoon of in his food to add flavor. The second that I quit feeding him that he cleared RIGHT up....never to have another "ear infection". It was never an infection, it was allergy to something in that cat food. Never fed him that again, of course. So I'd say on a dog that is constantly having "ear infections" that maybe it isn't infection and may very well be an allergy. You just gotta figure out what the thing is that they are allergic too by taking ingredients away. I'd start by googling the top things that dogs tend to be allergic to and go from there. Try 5-10 lb bags of different foods and watch the ears carefully for the reaction. Saves on waste. Once you know what works, then you can get any size you need.

Always a tough decision but that is the job when you take on responsibility for a life. Our lab had issues because she had grass and seasonal allergies (and insisted on eating grass like a cow😂). It made her paws and ears itchy so she would lick her paws making them yeasty (yep, that brewer’s yeast is in everything) and then she would scratch her ears transferring it and getting infections. We used Benadryl for the environmental allergens, wiped her paws regularly and treated them with ketoconazole periodically, and never had to worry about an ear infection again.

His groom looks amazing! I'm sure the owner had happy tears when they saw what a great job you did. I don't know his back story so I have nothing to say about his diet or allergies. I bet that felt SO good on his itchy skin. My pittie mix has some mild allergies and his dry skin is usually kept in check with salmon oil on his food. But when his allergies are bad, he gets cytopoint injections at the vet and they make a HUGE difference. It only lasts 1-2 months and is a bit expensive, but my pet insurance pays for it and I’d definitely recommend it for allergy season

All that suffering they put him through, just to make money, either that or they weren’t really vets at all! I was just thinking after watching your last video that you haven't had any Westies on. Was about to volunteer mine! Our Westie is allergic to all feathered animals, can only eat raw pork and fish without getting a yeast outbreak. If the owners are reading, I would suggest they try a yeast infection cream like Canesten on the tail and bum area, that really helped us to get the redness and irritation down. We also did a round of Cytopoint which we didn't want to but in the end i think that was what got it gone for good. We use Chlorhexidine shampoo as well. Hope this helps!

They definitely do react a lot to your demeanor. Cats are especially receptives to the energy their favorite person is putting out. I know they are extremely observant and like to watch things to learn them. That's how some cats including mine learned what a door knob is and that you have to do something with it to open doors, without being taught. Also something worth noting for both cats and dogs, is that when at a groomer or vet, they are in an unfamiliar environment with an unfamiliar person and are more likely to be anxious, so if they have a freeze response, they are much more likely to display it. Which ironically can end up making them more docile whereas they'd have no issue rebelling in their home.

I'm trying to keep my place dust free, got air purifiers, her litter is unscented. I got rid of any room air freshener plug ins, candles etc. But she still has the issue. Hopefully we can figure it out soon. I feel so bad for her. I have allergies etc so I know how much it sucks.

I love both your channels. You're such a wonderful person. So loving and caring. I'm sure you've inspired many to go in your line of work !! As for westies... My very dear westie (very much missed) used to love when we washed her... she liked the blow-drying too... She was so fluffy then... after we let her on the carpet when she finished the drying herself :D A real sweetheart.

I've had a Westy, a Cairn and now have a Skye, so basically the Trifecta of Scottish terriers. Such sweet creatures, until you approach their paws, or a mat.

From the comment section it looks like a lot of people have experience with Westies and their allergies. Definitely information like that would be helpful to the owners of these little guys so they might have a better idea how to control their itching skin. We all have had allergic reactions bug bites poison ivy experience can you imagine what it would be like itching like that everyday for a little guy that doesn't understand? Poor babies

There are Westie groups on Facebook that just cover the allergies and skin problems. My westie had beautiful skin, we only bathed her 4 times a year

Fun fact: 20% of people don’t itch with poison ivy. It’s an allergic reaction, not a poison.

ive enjoyed watching your videos, and as i am a westie owner, i was waiting for one... You did a fantastic job with Doogie. I had a westie, who was ridiculously grumpy by the end of his life, and i would have been very happy with what you were able to accomplish in this groom! Well done! :) Westie-tude is definitely a thing! :D

Poor little guy. Resigned, but I will bet that he feels so much better! And, yes, the meds made a huge difference!

This reminds me of my Westie- she passed away a couple years back. Such an exceptional breed of dog, but their skin is so very sensitive.

I also had a westie named Maggieshe lived to be 15.. no issues or allergies.. very well behaved..the first groomer I took her to..never spoke to the animals at all .. I finally found a groomer that loved her job and animals.. she did have a couple of fatty deposits, Maggie loved her and was always so excited to see the groomer.. so important..

Great segment. you did wonders with that little guy. I take my 80 lb long hair GSD to the groomers tomorrow, for the first time. Wish me luck.....lol

A lot will depend on the groomer's demeanor. If s/he is calm yet firm, the GSD will probably be reassured, esp if the bath water is warm. Good luck to your G-shep. They're great dogs.

@@SherryEllesson i lost an earlier GSD, Harley, to Hemangiosarcoma at almost 6. we had the surgery but it reoccurred in 3 months. I had to have another as he was such a great dog. I got another GSD from Top Gun Kennels in Fairfax Station so i had to name him Maverick. Totally opposite of Harley. We got another when he turned 1, a female GSD we had to name Phoenix. One of the characters in the movie Top Gun Maverick, so he could have a "wingman"......lol
