Not even allowed to carry pepper spray in this country, there's no way people should be allowed unregulated ownership of lethal dogs. Restriction by breed won't work. Rather all dogs over a given weight should need to be chipped and registered to an owner, who's criminally liable for any attack. Other conditions, like a muzzle in public, might apply if they're deemed potentially dangerous when registered/weighed.

It is already compulsory, since 2016, for all dogs to be microchipped and registered to an owner. It is also compulsory for dogs in public to wear a collar with a dog tag stating the owners name and address. Owners are criminally liable for an attack, including an aggressive dog that does not attack, and including on or in their own property. You can easily report a dangerous dog to the police or your local dog warden. I would recommend you do this even if you don't know who the owner is, the complaint is recorded and helps to establish a pattern of bad behaviour when other people report the same dog, if the owner is eventually identified.

I've seen people pulled over by small dogs. It's not the size of the dog. Smaller ones are harder to control in a way as they trip you up. Personally I used to walk my 10 stone American bulldog and my dogue de Bordeaux who must have been near that weight too together on walks for all of the years of their lives and I never had a single fall or out of control moment.

The difference is many many years of domestication. From what I've seen owning a wolf hybrid can be quite a challenge as they are still so close to the wild wolf. So personally I wouldn't look to get a wolf hybrid for that reason. As to dog breeds if your rationale is correct I would be dead many times over by now. I've owned large bullbreeds and mastiffs for over 20 years.

It definitely comes back to the owners, but IMO it's not the only issue, there has been specific breeding to get enhanced strength and aggression from these dogs. I would like to see licenses for high risk dog breeds - these, Caucasian Shepards etc... for example as it would deter average families from getting them, and give authorities some level of control of taking away these animals from irresponsible owners and breeders. - but I doubt if their is capacity to roll out such a scheme.

If you start by vetting breeders, you're halfway there already because they are the ones who are uniquely in charge of selecting the genes that flow into the dogs, and of the early socialisation of pups. For higher risk dogs, even if a broad category is listed, you could make it mandatory to pass a temperament test such as the UK Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog for example. And then for those who really need higher drive dogs for working purposes (eg. Military dogs or hunting dogs) you can make the test even more rigorous to get a Working Dog certificate.

Trouble is, the majority of these dogs are owned by ignorant aggressive people who want to intimidate others. Personally I have my concerns because a powerful dog like this against the majority of people would cause serious damage and a child or elderly person would most likely be killed. People shouldn’t be breeding dogs like these, but there needs to be stricter regulations on dogs and their owners. There isn’t an easy solution to this problem, but something has to be done because there has been a serious increase in dog attacks and people being killed by them.

The problem is not just the breed...the man said they buy them for a status dog but I don't think thats true every breed is a status to the individual taste.. problem is the amount of money to be made from breeding this breed, consequently 90% of the time used as cash machines for criminals with no regard for the welfare of the parents and puppies..just seen as a commodity the next new boom in a breed.. I'll tell you this most of the dogs I've had problems with are spoilt toy breeds that are not raised like a dog and there owners who have no control but because there small they think its funny , so from my point of view all dog's can attack but unfortunately because of the size they get a bad rap . I'm not saying that the killings and harm to people isn't terrible but banning a breed is not the solution, all that will happen is push the breeding practices more underground also out cross to other more dangerous breeds like the cane corsos or other mastiff breeds to make a hybrid to get away with them not being illegal. Id also like to add I'm not an XL owner so this is not a biased statement..l have owned and been brought up with lots of different breeds from spaniels to bullbreeds, you have to understand your breed your looking to own and its requirements physically and mental stimulation to have a happy balanced dog . Along side with that raised properly and mixed with all breeds big or small if you do this put the time and effort in like you would with your children, then more than likely you will have a balanced dog half of these dogs there claiming to be XL bullys to what I've seen are not true to the type they lean more to mastiff breeds or Pitbulls .I'm not going to go on anymore but all dog owners should remember where there breeds originate from thats the wolf then the ancient mollossers breeds from Rome and far east

Unfortunately this breed has the aggressive gene no matter who may say otherwise. Pitbulls are banned and I have experience with some of the sweetest but again they were bred for fighting and can get fixated when something triggers them. I do believe that breeding of these aggressive breeds should be banned. I am a dog lover but would never own a dog that I could not control or that may attack another human being. I think we have to let our heads rule our hearts in this matter. We all love our dogs but we have to be responsible owners.

@@pamelabinnie6897 9 Pit bull fatalities from 2000 to present and 9 fatalities from 2020 to present from American Bully XLs. I have to frank, the Pit Bulls are over a longer period so it’s not as bad (and yes one life is to much of cause) but the Bully’s XLs are over 3 years as there has not been any this year thus far. Looking at the other breeds, I was shocked to see breeds like Jack russels and springer spaniels on there. I stand corrected. I’m still right though over a longer period other breeds have killed more people than pit bulls, like Rottweilers. As a dog owner, it’s usually the owners fault, not the dogs but it is the dog that pays for it with its life.

Don’t blame the bully xl I do not own one but as a dog owner myself I’m not afraid of the breed I’ve met one and he was a huge softy if I saw one when out with my dog I’d ask if I could say hello. It’s how you raise them a ban on the breed is unfair and uncalled for.

Owning an American bully, not an xl, he is one of the most loving, gentle and well behaved dog I've ever owned. He is neutered, chipped and fully insured, including public liability. He is never off his lead whilst out on his walks, but is constantly bothered by smaller dogs, off lead, running up to him but our boy sits down, gives one bark. These loose dog's owners are the ones who apologise for their pets bad behaviour, whilst our bully just sits at my feet. I'm a 60yr old female and my bully weighs around 6 stone. He does not pull on his lead, we have trained him since we've had him. Not all bully's are the same.....it's not fair theyre all being labelled as dangerous dogs

Rules are made for averages, not for exceptions, and you are an exception - any dog you would own would be fine. I wonder if you just could not cope with choosing a labrador or a golden retriever or any other docile breed? Those breeds just wouldn't be as 'loving, gentle, and well behaved'? Really? @@Meelenko We "adopted" our bully at 8 months old, his previous owner having changed employment was unable to give him the attention and exercise he required. As I'd been walking him for his previous owner for the 2 months prior to adopting him, I welcomed being asked to be his new owner. Yes we could have gone out a purchased a lab, or similar breed puppy and our bully could then have gone to some irresponsible new owner, but after almost 9yrs of ownership of our bully I have no regrets at all for adopting him. He has never shown any sign of aggressive behaviour towards us, our family, including our grandchildren...nor other dog walkers or their dogs. Yes he may bark at the odd cat that walks along the boundary wall, but then so does the Jack Russell that lives next door.

Pippa. If you are 60 and your dog decided to turn on a human or dog. You won't be able to hold him back. I think no man could ever hold XL bully back. No matter how strong they are. Yes your dog might be a good dog. But Oneday he might not be. All dogs can turn. But more then others. My dog has never turned.
