How are the pallets attached to the foundation?
Answer: Impregnated beams are on concrete, and the beams are anchored to the concrete with concrete anchor, and the pallets are screwed to the beams on the concrete.

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book kzbin.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

Hey, it is up to you to know and decide how to do it, I made a stone parquet on top of the gravel area and poured concrete around it. And it has held up very well in three years ;) Thank you!

I’ve seen a lot of crappy pallet builds before as a carpenter but this one isn’t like that at all. I like the studs thrown between the pallets for vertical rigidity and the header plate to tie it all together. Great job 👍

@@normalguydoesitall how big are these studs between the pallets? I was difficult to determine how you fastened them to the pallets and the floor beams. I would like to do this someday. do you have any plans you followed of can you give some basic instructions? Thanks.
@normalguydoesitall
@normalguydoesitall 2 жыл бұрын
@@deniseignatowski5302 you mean beams? 2"x 4". I fastened them with long screws diagonally to the pallet blocks, corner and center blocks. No plans sorry, I followed my instinct and built as I could on an ongoing basis. Sorry the camera was so far away, didn't think the video would be so popular, I filmed it for myself so it would be good to watch the building rise. Hope there was help, if there are any questions then ask, i will try to answer. Thank you!

Amazing how relatively quickly you can build using pallets & once they are all tied together how strong the walls are. Definitely a way of moving forward, I guess it's just a matter of how difficult it is to accumulate pallets of the same size. Excellent floor you laid as well. Thanks, Don from South Aust.

Very nice build. I'm planning on building a tractor shed the same way once I can scrounge up enough pallets of the same size. I like how you used full length studs between the pallets for rigidity and using headers to tie them together at the top. Watching videos like this only gives me more ideas for when I build mine, thanks. :) .

I am very impressed!! I used to find donated pallets lots of places and have made small things with them (sidewalks, small bins for holding fence posts and stones, stall panels for sheep). I could never see the point of perfectly good wood going to waste. There is now a place about 30 miles from us that seems to have moved in on my resources. They put the pallets through wood chippers to make the bags of coloured wood people use to place around their yard structures. Trees, flower beds etc. Still an excellent recycling of pallets but sad for me. Having said that, I would love to have the ability to make such a wonderful barn. You have my complete admiration and kudos on your recycling and on your accomplishment!!

Super project. Stylish and awesome. Appreciate your skill to adjust the pallets which are mostly not so perfect for easy assembling the rectangular construction. I wonder how you had made such a correct planning of the concrete belt to fit the future pallet perimeter, keeping in mind the size differences. Even small. Great vision and proper hands!!! Nothing but the great respect! Do not ming the bloody stupid useless haters! During pandemia the wood went up 4 times even in Russia. And the project that size would cost a fortune. Rough indication at 15 KEuro (based on you latest video). So your idea encourages me a lot for the same doing. For my garage and sauna buildings. All the best for Estonia. Had a good friend Kaido from Tallinn in Soviet Army times...

The pallets that I use are good and I get them through a friend and I have already laid the foundation according to their dimensions. It's nice to hear that you have a friend in Tallinn, it's like the saying "the world is small" Please watch my other videos too, there are more videos from this barn build, this barn is almost ready and the animals are already using it. Soooo awesome. I love this. Thank you. I have the opportunity to get my hands on some used, only used once or just made pallets and they’re heat treated. Are those ok to use after being heat treated? I thought it was better that they are rather then not? I’ve always wondered how strong they are if I were to build something like this? Hopefully it’s going well and serves its purpose. Turned out exactly how I imagined it should be “in my mind lol when thinking of gathering pallets and building something”. I think that everything turned out great. Glad you put some upright through studs between some of the stacked pallets. They should have been between every pair of pallets and doubled at the corners. Also I wouldn’t have used those weak slat and block style pallets instead of the stronger slat on stringer type
@normalguydoesitall
@normalguydoesitall 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! yes the upright beams are necessary to make the walls stronger. You may have misunderstood, but these are not weak pallets, these are the strongest pallets ever available here. The blocks are made of wood and not sawdust, and the boarding is made of strong thick boards. These pallets are designed to transport four 200L oil barrels ;) Thank you, see the following videos as well.
@peterbarlow8912
@peterbarlow8912 4 ай бұрын
That load is on the top slats which is how the forks lift it. On end they aren’t load bearing. I would have doubled your top plate to lap the corners and long laps for the intermediate butt joints to strengthen the ‘beam’ between uprights. you know like a regular stud wall.

A note to those that concider this type of build. If you think you can find pallets that are exact same dimensions forget it. I scavenge pallets often. They are seldom the same. In order for you to make something even and level you'd need to build them yourself, why bother. If you intent is to slap some thing up functional and quick go for it.

Hey. Thank you! Of course, it can also be insulated and even a house can be built like this. Go see my channel has more videos of this build, roof, board and doors. So far total cost for me after all the build is about 600 eur, a lot of material is obtained for free. Thank you again!

It's so funny to see people guess at ridge height/roof pitch dimensions and just mark it with a pencil. It works, don't get me wrong, but it's so much easier to just work out some math with a napkin and a piece of charcoal. Great build though...the sturdiest I've ever seen with pallets.

Hi there. This is incredible!! Can I ask, did you fix the pallets to the ground at all or are they just standing on the raised concrete piece? Amazing work - subscribed - looking forward to watching your other films. Hi from Ireland. Say hello to my Irish friend Ian Pettersson :)

Thank you! I will try to answer you. this higher part is not concrete but impregnated wooden beam which is anchored to the concrete, and the pallets are screwed to this beam. so yes the pallets are fixed to the concrete. Thank you again and be sure to check out my other videos as well. And greetings to Ireland my friends ;)

Ah yes - understood. Looks like a concrete lintel from the camera's perspective. Another question then - when you say impregnated wood, I wonder is that the same as 'treated wood' as we would say here, or is that another level of treatment? Maybe it's a different term for the same thing.. No problem if you can't answer that. Many thanks for the reply!!

I just love this barn idea. I thought of this idea before but wasn't sure if it would be doable for structured reasons. But your build has changed my mind. I did have a question on the green paint on the bottom of your 2x4s is it a protective barrier of some kind?

Very cute and I love the floor but I’m wondering: Won’t the slatted pallets allow pretty much every type of weather to blow right through? Doesn’t look like much protection for the horses from cold wind, rain and snow. Also, the pallet wood is not particularly thick. Couldn’t a horse easily kick through them and injure itself when its leg is pulled back through? And what type of trees were used for the pallet wood? Here where I live it’s nearly all cottonwood and after about a year in the elements, they don’t rot, they disintegrate!

Very nice build but only if your local council allows a Pallet build - some will not. What are you going to use for Cladding? More pallet wood? Or don't you need cladding? You could actually make very nice sheds from Pallets also and I've even made post and rail fences from recycling Red Gum fence posts and many pallets from a local roof tiling Manufacturer and most Fencing contractors just dump - along with the old Fencing palings - in Tips or land fills - which is such a waste of wood. Most new fences are replaced with treated pine fencing these days - but even the old hardwood palings that aren't too badly rotted where they are nailed to the railings - can still be recycled also. I've already used some Treated pine fence palings as Cladding for a shed and some of that can be found at new home building sites as either surplus or mistakes made by the fencing guys at times - but also, since the treated pine posts buckle and warp more often than not - even some newer fences need to be replaced sooner than the older Hard wood ones do. I'm recently considering using the old hardwood fence palings that I currently get from a local fencing contractor to mostly burn as firewood for my wood heater - that he is actually grateful for me taking away from his home as he normally just pays tip fees and dumps trailer loads of old fencing in land fills. I could either use the old Hardwood fence palings as Cladding or more recently, have considered those hardwood palings as possible use for Decking purposes at my bush property - for a deck between the existing single garage size shed and the caravan on that camping block. They are too thin to use as single decking and of course a little weaker where there is some slight rotting where they were nailed to the fence rails but overall not too bad - IF they were doubled up and overlapped to double thickness. I'm going to try that anyway - since the [free] palings are normally dumped or in my case have previously been firewood - I think doubled up they'd serve pretty well as decking. I was considering Pallet wood Decking but that being untreated pine - when separated from the Pallet itself - also warps and twists a little whereas the Hardwood fencing - no matter how old it is - seems to remain fairly straight. The older the Hardwood palings the more Brittle they seem to be but Doubled up could still be used as Decking I think, and, incidentally they could still be used as cladding also. The main advantage is cost effectiveness if you are on a budget. [ Free - but does take time to de-nail them, pallets and/or fence palings] In the case of Pallets though - IF you don't have a modern stapler or nail gun - you do get several barrels worth of reasonably still usable and most often only slightly rusty - nails. [ Yeah, takes time to straighten them out also - but what the Heck] If you are retired then time is not a problem - but Health can be.;) I use recycled auto sump oil [ diesel is best ] to preserve the straightened and slightly rusty nails if I'm going to keep them for any length of time for future use - since I only possess a conventional claw hammer - or two to three actually. ;) Needless to say I use the Sump oil for preserving the wood also and relatively recently made a front pallet wood Picket fence for my daughter in-law's place that is standing up to time much better than some of newer picket pine fences done by professionals in my neighbourhood area. ;) Australian weather conditions are not kind to some pine picket fences. ;) Incidentally, I decided to add a little non carpenters tip to any considering using Pallet wood as a Picket fence - I used the free Red gum fence posts [ once you cut off the rotted part that was in the ground] and would just place them 4 feet apart [ the length of a pallet roughly] and didn't need the conventional rails as I used Pallet wood rails top and bottom on Both sides of the Fence post sections and nailed the 3 inch nails on a roughly 45 degree angle from both sides of that top and bottom pallet wood rails and thus the fence hasn't warped because the nails can't pull out as easily as nailing them straight on - because the angled nails hold those two double rails to the pickets top and bottom - almost good as if you'd screwed them in place. But because the Red gum posts were so old and hard - needed to add an extra length of pallet wood to each side of the red gum posts - to nail the picket sections to and had to drill pilot holes for the nails through the extra 'add on' side lengths into the red gum posts - to stop my reused/recovered secondhand nails from incessantly bending. ;)
