This is a simplistic characterization of a agonizingly complex moral dilemma that Finkelstein elaborates. The British gave Zionism the green light during the Mandate of Palestine which created an organic irreconcilable conflict in the land, greatly amplified by religion. There is no simple perspective on the situation.

Actually... no. See, the land was called Judaea, Samaria, and Galilee until the Roman occupation. No Arab Muslims there yet (they came 600 years later). The Hebrews rebelled against emperor Hadrian around 130 CE when Jerusalem was renamed Aelia Capitolina. After the Romans crushed the rebellion, the Jews were kicked out of Jerusalem. Judaea, Samaria, and Galilee were renamed Palestine, after Israel's sworn enemy in the antiquity, the Philistines. The Philistines were tribes from Crete who migrated to Levante after the Bronze Age collapse around 2,500 BCE. They weren't Semitic people, but Aegean (Greeks). That's thousands of years before any Arab set a foot in Levante. Later, Palestine was an administrative division within the Ottoman empire for 400 years. The empire collapsed after WWI. The British took over temporarily to avoid a catastrophic power vacuum. There was a land survey to set the borders of modern Arab countries in 1945. The Jews bought land from the Ottoman in the 1880s. This is why the UN suggested a dual state in 1947. The Arab state would be called Palestine, the Jewish one Israel. The Jews accepted, and Israel was recognised. The Arabs didn't because they wanted everything. BTW, the UN partition was quite fair to the land ownership in 1945. Israel removed themselves from Gaza completely in 2005. Hamas got to power as the government of Gaza in 2007. They had 16 years to develop Gaza with the billions of dollars they get in international aid every year. Where's the money?

I don't know Finkelstein's books. I've merely glanced through his twitter feed and a couple of his substack posts. Seen a couple of interview segments. My reaction is unequivocal and bone-deep. Here's a guy who says it "warms every fibre of (my) soul" to see those he (interchangeably, as rhetorical convenience requires) - describes as: "Palestinian militants" "The people of Gaza" "concentration camp inmates" etc etc (but never "Hamas", that I could see - which wouldn't make him anything other than marginally more honest, in any case) And when he sees those people engaging in wanton rape and murder, which activity he characterizes variously as: "Trying to free 1,000,000 children, who have been held hostage in Gaza for nearly two decades..." or a "slave revolt" etc etc; again - as rhetoric requires, - While he must know that Hamas has said, openly, that it is only interested in "a perpetual state of war" and has no desire to provide anything else to or for the people of Gaza; no infrastructure, nothing - certainly no protection of their rights. Nothing but indoctrination, that they might become "martyrs" - that is - cannon-fodder in a perpetual self-abnegating war of dual annihilation. What do I conclude? That he's an evasive and morally-bankrupt piece of work. "Free Gaza", my ass. And of those here who similarly fail (in their defense of Finkelstein) to mention Hamas by name and refuse to identify their clear and stated aims and the fact that those aims are anathema to the "freedom" or flourishing of the people of Gaza? What I find he likes to do is cherry pick quotes from bad actors that suit and reinforce his agenda. A great comment I read in the chat is that '' He is not jewish. I doubt psychopathy is at play here. Psychopathy is quite rare. Most of the world’s problems are attributable to people of normal brain development. A person who relishes in the suffering of other people would need to be able to put himself in their shoes so to speak in order to derive pleasure from it. Sadism requires empathy. You have to know what someone else’s pain feels like in order to enjoy their suffering. A psychopath doesn’t know what emotional suffering feels like. There is no emotional payoff for a psychopath to inflict pain on others and so the effort is a waste of time. Finkelstein’s motive is likely to get off on making others hate him. Perhaps that is his disease.

I believe that during acute traumatic events, some people, especially children, fully identify themselves with the aggressors rather than victims because it's just much safer. Also, many children of Holocaust survivors suffered from their broken parents, which might have also contributed to their affiliation with all sorts of fascists.
