I live in Australia, where, sadly, Norman Rockwell's art is not all that well known. I happened to find a copy of the Saturday Evening Post at a book store back in the early 1970's... the cover art blew me away.... I tried to find more of the magazines, but to no avail. So I subscribed to the publication and eagerly awaited for them to arrive in the post. It was an expensive thing to do back in those days...the shipping from the USA to Australia, cost more than the magazine! In the 1990's I found a book about him, written by Elizabeth Miles Montgomery. I was in seventh heaven. I have spent many, many hours studying the artwork this book. He was the absolute master of his craft. I liken his paintings to a concise telling of a great story, all told on just one page....a story that never left you to question the plot. It's eye candy for the soul.. Cheers

Yes, an absolute beautiful story in one frame. Though they were commissioned or sold for a specific purpose many years ago, they still stand alone as amazing art today. Great story sir, thank you for sharing.

I share your admiration of Rockwell. A genius that presently has no match. Thank you.

I was raised in small town Minnesota. Norman has always been my favorite artist because he painted an America that existed for me . my town was pretty much like his . My sister was one of the first kids to go to school in the new school that had 7 class rooms, and as far as I know the one room school is still standing and looks like it did when my dad went to it . His teacher was also mine and all my siblings . She drove a 37 chevy coupe everyday to the school four blocks from her houses . There were several old cars in town like the ones Norman painted . My first ball glove wasn't much better than the ones he painted . Some of the people in my home town dressed the way he painted too . My first job was for the newspaper were I learned about the projector that was in 1963 I was 13 years old . and people think the projector is a new thing and that it is cheating if you use it , but when you've got a week to put out a painting you need all the help you can get . Norman Rockwell painted the America I grew up in then it went to pot and a few other things

I totally agree Jay. How many times have I seen it written that Rockwell painted an America that didn't exist? or, he "idealized" our experiences? Like you, most of what he painted was exactly like my upbringing. We skipped school to wade the creek or swim. Every guy that came back from the military was a hero in my neighborhood. We were ragged kids with the ever present pup, looking for a chance to fish or get into an adventure. Thank you for your comment.

HFR - I'm another Aussie ... old enough to remember Norman Rockwell's work clearly in the Saturday Evening Post; I looked forward to each edition for Rockwell's covers alone. The man was an extraordinary artist in terms of creating his unique slant on the everyday. You say his work is "luscious" ... a great word for it. I also enjoy your commentary ... thank you.
