Thanks Mark, as an SG freak I'm glad you featured a couple early 70's Norlin SGs with harmonica bridge. The other one was the Deluxe w/2 scratchplates, embossed Gibson logo pups (sadly no optional stereo on that one) Note these SGs are LIGHTLY beveled, almost flat on top as opposed to the deeper bevels around horns later. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Markus - once again you missed an opportunity to instruct the gang about the "long tenon SG" (pre '70) vs. the "short tenon SG" (71-on) . Supposedly this is a huge deal for collectors. The earlier SGs did the neck/body joint differently - the space between the horns was body so the shaped part of the neck was shorter, and the neck tenon longer. By '71/2 that ratio was flip-flopped with the neck joint happening farther down the body - so more neck, less body (and a shorter neck tenon). The overall neck blank is the same length (or close) in both cases- but the body blank is 2-3" shorter with this version, and no doubt saved Gibson some $$$. A lot of people diss these SGs but I like them better - I think they actually sound better (and I've owned both eras) The Neck pickup is right up against the fretboard where it should be (earlier models had that crappy filler plate) -but even more importantly the pickups are farther apart - so you have more tonal variation and some 'experts' say a better location in terms of the overtones. The "harmonica bridge" is by Schaller (sp?) I believe - at least that's what I've always been told. I like that better too - more saddle travel for better intonation. SGs of this era were notorious for "wrong neck angle" - you'll see guys have to load the strings OVER the stop tailpiece so they don't rub the back of the bridge. I have the 2-PUP version of the '72.. swapped the stock HB's for 4-wire DiMarzios and added a phase switch - so I get sort-of the same middle position sound as the 3-PUP version. Cheers!

How do they pick the guitar for guitar of the day? Is it just the most expensive/rare ones in stock? I mean, I can see teles in the background so obviously they're not out of telecasters. Just wondering.
@wingracer16147 жыл бұрын
They are never out of Tele's. They are just out of particularly interesting ones that we haven't already seen a version of a dozen times before. Why show yet another ordinary, everyday 70s or 80s player grade Tele when you have a cool SG you could do?
