I am strictly an avid listener, not a musician in ANY sense of the word BUT, of all the guitarists on this Part 1 session, the duo of Jared James Nichols and Michael Lemmo was, to me, totally in a VERY creative groove; the transitions of the leads were so smooth and there seemed to be no end to the variations each player developed.....a delight to listen to, many thanks for the posting!

Colin Hay has a sincerity in his singing that can't be ignored. It's the soul of a true artist. Here it was just a snippet of a song yet I was deeply moved. Joe Bonamassa is a true Olympic athlete on the fret board and I would love to have that skill yet I'm never moved by his playing. As for Larry Carlton. Well, He's a master musician, plain and simple. He's got the skill that very few have and the soul to move anyone with the heart to hear.

Right. Joe has skill. But thats it... He has no soul. No feeling. Hard pass..
@jonRboy
@jonRboy 2 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with your assessment of Bonamassa. I don't find his playing interesting at all; it does nothing for me. I mean he knows his pentatonic scales and does all the stock licks, has technique and speed but how cares? It sounds so generic and uninteresting. There's a huge gulf when comparing his part of this clip with Larry Carlton's.
@philsarkol6443
@philsarkol6443 2 жыл бұрын
You have written exactly what I had in mind; in that order. The honesty and sincerity of Colin Haye in his performing this song "Overkill", of wich I thought was titled "Night after night"..and mr. Larry Carlton who has this way of playing and the sound, with his heart and soul, down to earth man I admire and respect greatly!! (As for the show-off..no soul, no blues on a big jazzer..olympic medal for runnin up and down the stairs)
@mrfester42
@mrfester42 2 жыл бұрын
@@philsarkol6443 Right! ,,, except I wouldn't go so far as to call Bonamassa a show off. In fact, I think the opposite is true. The feeling I get when he plays is that he's turned totally inward. Maybe that's why his playing sounds so flat and uninteresting. He's just conversing with himself in his own language. All the musicians that I would call great have a heart that has something to say and a "soul" that wants to connect with others and be heard with a language that everybody understands. All the great ones, no matter how reserved and humble they are when not playing, are just aching to connect with the world and THAT is what we hear.

Albert Lee puts me in mind of my old English professor who had a vocabulary around five times the norm. He was a pleasure to listen to - his lectures were always innovative expressing subtle nuances of meaning in different ways. Over 40 years ago, when I wanted to learn how to play lead guitar, all I could afford was a book on blues guitar and Albert Lee was the main inspiration of that book. The author felt that if you needed a mentor or goal for guitar playing, Albert Lee would do fine. Still proves to be the case.

Most of his visitors are not there for a social visit, they are there snooping, people in our line of work always stop by there particularly newbys, to let norman know they are around and possibly available for whatever. I won't say who this person is because he did not give me permission to ,but one of the greatest guitar players alive today was discovered by a prison guard in florida after hearing him play day after day in the prison, and realizing this man can play anything after hearing it only one time, put that together with a voice that absolutely commands respect from the greatest singers and you got yourself a 100 million dollar man, and he did just that in less than 5 years , one day he might tell the world his story but not yet, he is a bit busy making up for lost time .

Every musical instrument has its own personality - it’s voice. It tells you what it wants to play - not the other way round. This is especially true for vintage gear.
