The word among experts on Strat-Talk is that Bakelite was never used in Strats. It was used on Telecasters, but Fender used a different brittle plastic on Strats.

I repeat, Soriano needs to do more than just the spec check. He needs to do more complex GOTD episodes. That having been said, Graham is definitely a good player. I for one might have chosen that particular reissue model if I wanted something with that vintage appeal instead of something with a modern appeal but I've always gravitated toward.

My Lefty Big Apple Strat is an American Deluxe made in 1994 with maple neck of course.

Fun Fact: Tom DeLonge from blink-182 used this guitar in White during the Cheshire Cat/Dude Ranch era. It's commonly referred to as his "Sticker Strat."

I don’t think the pickup covers are Bakelite, I believe more recent knowledge has lead the the determination that styrene is the more likely suspect! Great presentation!

The 2014 Anniversary has Bakelite, and they are the short skirt (very brittle). Those volume knobs aren’t short skirt and are more yellow than the Bakelite. I would guess those knobs are replaced.

I bought one of those new in 1994. I have to say that really it wasn't worth the difference over the '57 reissue that was available at the time. Apparently Fender claimed that it was copied from one particular 1954 Strat, and that was why the headstock looked like it did! Mine sounded great, but it wasn't a keeper.

Norm better hire some new talent because this guys ain't it.... the 1994 40th - I happen to have bought two new in 1994, and you guys are ate up with WRONG. No, they do not have bakelite covers, they have stock plain old plastic covers. And they are only TOP COATED with lacquer, they are still covered in a nice thick coat of plastic urethane sealer. They were NOTHING like original 54's except for the coloring and typical Strat layout. Everything else was straight up 57/62 reissue hardware. They came with 2 cases - the brown case that kinda looked like the old ones, and a new plastic case... they also came with a reprint of the 54 paperwork. Brand new they were $1400, which was really a basic 2-tone Strat with a bunch of marketing hoopla. Of all the many guitars I've bought in my life, the 40th was the biggest mistake, they were not good for or at anything, other than maybe a decent sounding set of pickups in an era when there were very few choices available in pickups. I was lucky enough to sell what I had for break even money, and never looked back. Seeing this pop up today was like PTSD lol.
