There was a lightbulb cartel operating between the 20s and 50s that artificially limited the life of their bulbs to make people buy more, but they were caught and regulations were put in place. There's a large trade-off between efficiency and lifespan in incandescent lightbulbs though. The bulbs that have lasted over 100 years have thicker filaments, and produce less light for the power they consume. They switched to tungsten filaments because they're more efficient, but at the operating temperature, tungsten evaporates.

The cartel didn't limit the lifespan to sell more lightbulbs. They did it because the inefficient bulbs meant power companies (which several of the cartel members also were) needed more infrastructure. Some power companies used to give away lightbulbs just so people wouldn't use inefficient ones as lightbulbs are dirt cheap.

Better house-rule for this game: If you are on the green team and you get it right, you score 2 points but you still flip your card to orange team. This reduces the amount of points you can get but it doesn't break your game if you get the final one right.

so I looked up information on the Light Bulb for you guys in the comments, the longest lasting Light Bulb is a light bulb found in a fire station in Livermore California. this bulb does work but the problem is older bulbs start to emit less light, so while it was a 30 watt bulb that emitted the same light as any light bulb you have today, it started to lose light and now basically just emits light enough to say that its on and is essentially a glorified night light. this light bulb is called "Centennial light" and is the oldest light that we can confirm (sort of) the age of when it was put in, being 116 years old. there are 2 other worthy examples of long living light bulbs, the first being "the Ediswan light bulb" which is said to be 134 years old but this bulb is really just kinda hearsay, its owned by a woman and she claims its the oldest light bulb. the other one is called "the eternal light" which was put in by stage hands and is now 109 years old, but also interesting is that this bulb was meant to be destroyed when its original home, the byers opera house, was set for demolition however 1 man named George Dato saved it and eventually sold it to stockyards museum where it stays on for 24 hours and even has an entire facebook page. you made me jump down the light bulb rabbit hole Sullivan. I hope you are happy.

Herd Mentality is a very similar idea with _slightly_ more "ability to be competitive" since it has the "blocked from winning if you screw up even though you have points" thing built in - but in the form of a single pink cow that you only lose by someone else messing up later.

On the lightbulb thing. It was installed in 1901 and is known as the centennial bulb. It has run almost continuously since then. It has dimmed significantly over the last century. It is also true that lightbulbs were one of the first products with planned obsolescence. This all said, the centennial bulb is an anomaly rather than something that can realistically be designed.

I'm...for the degree question, I have to say there is a correct answer. See, I have a theatre degree, and honestly of the three I'd say it's the middle. The exercises I learned to do have been the most useful part, but I only say that because water and food hate me, no matter what pace I consume them at, and being able to locate different points in your throat has helped me essentially calm down and not strangle or drown myself at dinner probably over 100 times now. When you look for work in acting, they'll see your little degree, rip it into confetti, and ask for your portfolio and demo reel. If they like those, maybe they'll fire your degree confetti into the air in celebration and call you in to audition. Fine arts I would imagine is the exact same. They ask for examples of your work, and they'll ask for "audition" samples made to match what they will expect you to make. Fine arts also tend to be solo efforts, so I'd say this one is probably the least useful, and by that I mean the one you could get to the level of without schooling the easiest. Music, however, is different. And that's because music is often a collaborative effort. Yes, they want your demo reel to hear how you play whatever it is you play, but at least that degree also says to them that you've been in several different situations in your field, know how everything works, and have succeeded at applying your musical abilities in a group setting. Because that degree is all they really have to know you can perform well in a large group, because the only other thing they could use is like a video of an orchestra playing that you're in where the music doesn't sound atrocious.

On the light bulb thing they were talking about at 23:42 or so, that's not entirely true. Lifetime lightbulbs is inversely proportional to how bright they are. While you can make a lightbulb that lasts 100+ years, it will extremely dim and not useful to light up a room.
