Stan Lee said it best in the 50s when these kinda people came after comics. "They looked and saw that these kids all read comics. So it's must be the comics fault. But these kids also drank milk, Went to school, breath air, ext, but that didn't fit the narrative."

DM's as described by a moral panic: "They lure impressional youths into rooms decorated with satanic imagery! They create a world where they control the fates of these poor kids encouraging them to act out violent fantasies!" Me, an actual DM on just about any game night: "Please stop threatening my shopkeepers. They're asking reasonable prices for their services and goods. :( "

Me as a DM: Please stop trying to get into the house. There is nothing there. The quest does not point there. Why are you trying to throw someone up to the second floor...you know there is a ladder inside right? RIGHT?! Oh god you have spent an hour trying to get into this house where nothing is...now I gotta make something up just to make this worth it please I beg you stop.

My mother was one of those "DND is Satanic" people. Made my father stop playing and throw his books out in the garbage. I went out and rescued the briefcase with v1.0 PHB, DMG, MM, MM2, and Deities & Demigods; along with 6 pewter minis and 3 sets of dice. Still have them to this day. My DND groups? Steal from the safe behind the shopkeepers counter as he's outside talking to the mayor. Blame the theft on a pesky spymaster (that we didn't know was a spymaster) to get her arrested so that she would stop following us around.

Seems like the D&D outrage is similar to the video game outrage of the late 90s. A bunch of parents that do not want to talk with their kinds about what they like and then also don’t want to find out for themselves what said thing really is. It’s easier to just go “I didn’t have that as a kid and I turned out ok so my kid don’t need whatever this is.”. It’s lazy parenting
@Humorless_Wokescold
@Humorless_Wokescold 3 жыл бұрын
The video game panic also had a lot to do with the shifting technological landscape. Games like Doom were being installed on every school computer and teachers/parents couldn't stop kids from doing it. Toss in the deliberately demonic imagery and it's easy to see why some people assumed these games were encouraging children to act deliquently.

It's literally been like this for a century. Socialism, comic books, black music, elvis, beatles, black sabbath, metal music, violent movies, video games, rap music, dnd, magic the gathering, the simpsons, beavis and butthead, jackass, wrestling, marilyn manson, miley cyrus, cardi b. Cant even put them in order as they tend to repeat. There's a certain conservative segment of the population that wants to blame everything for their failings as parents. To completely absolve themselves of responsibility. They don't want to form any kind of relationship with their kids beyond master and subject. People whose lives are so comfortable, they must seek out problems to get upset about.

@@mildhelmwisun3115 eh, this isnt the place to go into details but it is not a coincidence that white supremacists refer to black people as orcs and that it is problematic that in fantasy genre male armour is armour and female armour is a bikini made of metal. This isnt really a moral panic, it is a re-contextualising of a genre based on evolving societal norms and evolving our fantasy with it. Metal boob armour is fine, breast baring cleavage armour is decades out of date now, for example. WOW did a good job re-developing and expanding their orc canon, as another.
@PhillipSievers
@PhillipSievers 3 жыл бұрын
@@mildhelmwisun3115 societal norms don't mean everyone agrees. It is a conversation on what is good for fantasy genre as a whole, which is really a wider expression of society as a whole, which is why you need a pretty good argument for why a male warrior wears a full plate and mail harness and a female warrior alongside him wears a mini skirt and full cleave bare mid "bikini top armour". That stuff is frankly just embarrassing. Fantasy is decades behind sci fi on this stuff, to find a good parallel - which has often led society, let alone reflected changing expectations.

I remember watching that 60 Minutes episode with my parents the night it aired and when they started going after the game I got worried. But when that guy said all serious that parents had seen their son summon demons into his room my parents laughed. My Dad was a great guy who never comprehended the game, but he trusted me, and he laughed saying ‘Sounds like those parents were smoking some wacky weed.’ And that was that, life went on. And I’ve always been sad that so many people think Christians are against it. We were allowed to play it... gasp... in our Church youth-group in our Church building!!! Are some nutty people who call themselves Christian against it? Sure they are, so the media puts them on tv to look like idiots.

On the other hand, in highschool, despite having a game going every day, we weren't allowed to organize a games club and many of us had to educate our parents on the hobby specificly to counter that stigma. I still bump into boomers who believe it, and try to talk about it in that ignorant way. The only reason it's not 'a thing' any more is the kids who played it grew up and know better.

I was taught that DND, Pokémon and Harry Potter were agents of the devil, and if I ever watched or played it I would go to hell and burn for eternity. I still have a small mountain of chick pamphlets somewhere that several churches threw at me and I've never gotten rid of them, just because of how crazy they were. Critics of D&D and similar games always sound like they've never taken the time to learn even an iota about the content. They hear the stories, see the box, etc.... When I was in the Navy back in 2000, a friend found out I was playing Diablo 2 and asked "isn't that about demons and evil and stuff?" I said "yeah... but those are the bad guys." I was introduced to D&D in 1982. On the first week of middle school, there was a D&D club announced to be running in the art room after school on Fridays. Me and my friends went to that club every week. It was packed with not a single empty table. Then, maybe four weeks later, my friends and I went to the club meeting and found the door locked with no one in there. We figured that the club just was cancelled that week and we didn't get the memo. So we went the next week. And the next week. Each time, the door was locked, no one there. Sometime in mid October, the club just... vanished. I don't know if something happened, or some parent complained, or some school official bent to crazy media pressure, but the club just... disappeared from the school and no one mentioned it again, as if it never existed. I never figured out why that club was cancelled so fast, at that time. It wasn't for lack of popularity, because the room was ALWAYS packed with players.

Depression is not always genetic and also as the other reply stated not paying any attention to the well-being of your child is a failure on a parent's part. And generally I expect the more tragic and blameless events to not have parents which blame demons and Satan and the influence of the occult in activities that their child genuinely enjoyed. And legally child neglect is often considered a crime so not paying attention to your child and putting them in a position without anyone to talk to for help is definitely a choice. I am speaking harshly but I am pushing far to let the record stand at a reasonable distance.

Thank you for doing this excellent documentary. Back in the 70s as the primordial slime coalesced into sentient goo blobs, I too played D&D. I was there at the inception of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (the Monster Manual arrived on the same day as my History O-level). I still have the dice from the original basic set. I played at school and at University. I was completely unaware of the moral panic about it until I met a young lady who told me her landlady had warned her about these strange people who played this demonic game called Dungeons and Dragons who should be avoided at all costs. Thankfully, my infectious charm and rapier wit won the day (insert multiple laughey faces) -- we have been married for over 30 years and to keep connected in these strange times, I have been running Curse of Strahd on-line for the "children". As the story of the moral panic unfolded, I felt cross that such obvious inaccuracies about the game were promulgated by lazy or malicious reporting. But time and time again, we see the same script regurgitated as something new emerges to corrupt the youth. And so the wheel turns and we find ourselves back at the start, having learned precisely nothing it would seem.

Back in the late 70's through the 80's, especially for younger players, we all tended to write adventures about what we were into at the time. Unfortunately, I knew several groups of kids who were really into getting into their parent's liquer cabinet, drinking, doing drugs, and getting high, as a hobby. Add to that the fact that most of them were into heavy metal during the time period where all the metal bands were adding satan references in their songs, and album covers, because that was the new "edgy trend". There were so many D&D groups that I encountered in the 80's where it seemed that the DM and players made the point of all their adventures, "Get as much drugs as possible, and have the characters get as high as possible on every single drug they could find. And they would also inevitably have evil player characters, who, of course, would work for Satan. I knew SO MANY of these kids. And there were a lot of OTHER groups of kids who ran games like this just to troll their parents. I never played in ANY games like this, so it really struck me at the time that all these parents, the news media, etc.. found the game "Evil". It just never occurred to me why. In our games, we were ALWAYS the good guys FIGHTING AGAINST evil. Those kids who were using the game like the previous example I gave were a serious minority. But they were portrayed as THE WAY THE GAME IS PLAYED, in all the media.

This was great, very informative and I really enjoyed the dramatic reading. That moment when you realise the church comic you’re reading is more cult like propaganda than the supposed “satanic cult” of D&D. Also, I also use D&D as an allegory for the fortnightly TTRPG I play and another I run that use non-D&D systems for ease of access. People have no idea what I’m talking about when I mention BESM.

have you guys considered doing a top 10 list for dungeons & dragons board games by any chance? i'd love to hear your thoughts on tomb of annihilation, dungeons of the mad mage, and dragonfire for example.

The instigators of the moral panic in the 80's would have had an aneurysm if Dungeon Crawl Classics or Vampire: the Masquerade had existed back then 🤣🤣🤣

I just never liked the math of a d20. I prefer 3d6 and played a lot of GURPS as a result. But it's just so much more messy than good DnD.

Excellent video as always Luke! Though speaking of DnD, are there any chances that you guys do some DnD sessions for the channel? I feel like that would be a lot of fun to watch.

Dungeons and Dragons more than almost any other works molded the gaming industry of video games and fantasy card games as we know it today. ALso, Big Bang Theory featured D&D earlier than most of those other tv shows. For me, a player since 1st edition in the 1980s, D&D was a means for me to escape the poverty and misery of my youth. It was a positive outlet for me and would alongside theater save me from myself.

Could you do a top 10 board games based on big brands / licensed games. You know like Lord of the rings, game of thrones etc. Sorry if it already exists and i didn´t see it, but sometimes it is easier to get your friends into something with a name they know ;)

I liked 4th edition :( Fun fact: DND 5th edition has by PHB/RAW/RAI no critical failures or sucesses for Skill checks, only for Attack rolls, and even then a nat 1 on an atack rol is an automatic miss, nothing more.

In my home town their was a double murder of children in my town shortly before I was born blamed on d and d. Because I grew up around the moral out rage. It made national news and my mom pointed out the graves of the murdered children. The case and trial marked the first time the Young Offenders Act would be used since being passed in April 1984. I being a Christain I assumed it to be evil... But I looked into for my self and now play it weekly.

I’d argue the satanic panic continued through the 90s up to the early 2000s. I had to prove to my parents that Pokémon were not demons when I was 15

Great video although had my head in my hands when it came to the "Christian" comic book. Myself, the DM and one of the other players in our group all met each other at church. I despair of the "Christians" which are in the ban this, ban that brigade and have no clue what they're talking about. I'd ask them where in the bible does it say "Thou Shalt not play Dungeons and Dragons" as I can confidently say it's not in there.
