To answer to some likely questions... (check the description for more info and links) The mods I'm using in this video are the Heroes 3 HD mod (higher resolution, battle queue, QoL improvements) and Horn of the Abyss (new creatures, new features). They are mods for Heroes 3 Complete Edition and they don't work on Heroes 3 HD Edition (from Steam), which I don't recommend buying. Both of these mods are used by the majority of regular players and are high quality. I wanted the video to be fairly snappy so I didn't cover some potentially detailed things like hero chaining. However, I'm aiming to cover more tips in future videos (so feel free to subscribe 😉). Maps shown in the video include Gold Rush, Rediscovery, Dungeon Keeper and a random map from my Vampires Only series. I've made playthrough playlists for all of them, either already uploaded or soon to be uploaded.

What I learned from this video that I didn't know after playing this game for almost my entire life: - The pros of having 1 unit stacks - Faster units in your army increases hero speed on land - Creature bank (cluster) formation 1, 2 = top, 3,4,5 = mid, 6, 7 =bottom - Press space to use portals???? Whaaaaat - that's legit a game changer! - Towers prioritizes bottom ranged rather than top ones Noting this to remember it btw, thanks dude ^^
@brianmayabella59924 жыл бұрын
#1 it depends if you have an overwhelming army or underwhelming. I learn this from AI tactics. The goal here is to lose counter and the highest number have a free attack without being counter thats why griffin or counter attack spell is good. Defending siege towers ALWAYS inflict on highest possible killable stack. I think the formula here is if creature is equal or below 30hp target it else other creature.
@wizardsuth3 жыл бұрын
The space bar is more like "take action". If your hero's on a windmill, he collects resources. If he's on a dwarven treasury, he attacks. If he's on a monolith, he teleports. I used to position my scout heroes one step away from certain buildings at the end of day 7 so I could collect from them at the start of day 1. Now I leave them on the building and save 1 movement.
@Ericwvb23 жыл бұрын
@@wizardsuth Spacebar is very useful. If for example I end up at a building and forget I'm out of resources to pay, I can go sell some at the marketplace and then go back to the hero press spacebar and buy without having to waste movement points. Before I knew about the spacebar I would have to exit the building and re-enter, wasting movement points.

A tip I have when playing with Vampire Lords (my favorite unit) : the upper and lower left corners of the battle arena are bordered by 3 hexes but the upper and lower right corners of the battle arena are bordered by only 2 hexes. That means that if you're battling living non-ranged single hex units slower than your Vampire Lords, you can wait on the first turn, then fly to the center and on turn two fly to one of the right most corners and battle at most 2 at a time. If you have blind you can reduce that to 1. This means you can take out a much more powerful army. Because you keep regenerating units as you suck out the life of the other army, the AI will attack you even though you can defeat the army easily even if it takes a long time.
@janbo83314 жыл бұрын
One tip I would add is that the units don't have movement caps on the campaign map, only heroes do. To bring in reinforcements from towns to the main armies one can set up a chain of heroes, transferring troops from one hero to another as their movement ends.

I have to walk to the dwellings to find it out but then it just shows for the rest of the game if I right click.

Thank you. I'm jumping back in after many years off. I forgot most of this stuff. Multiple stacks of the same unit is an easy way to gain a big advantage. If the unit has a good special you can play with that a lot. I usually find myself leaving one of the units at the stronghold to stack (most always the slowest unit so I keep my hero movement up as well, plus they're usually tanky) while I split one of the units in two. Like with the Swamp faction. The upgraded serpents weaken the enemy (and they dispel). You only need one single unit and they attack first almost all the time. You'll weaken the unit and draw use its counter and then have the whole rest of your army to follow up. You only sacrifice the one unit. More than worth it.

This COMPRESS the army UP to the top of the screen, with the MasterGremlin in the top CORNER. He gets first move. Wait. The move 8 Stone Gargoyle up in front. Then 9 Stone Gargoyle front down. Leave the 1 stack Stone Gargoyles as bait, or move them up in front of the other. Then plug the last hole around the MasterGremlin, with the 10 Stone Golem. The weak, but long range MasterGremlin is now SAFE, and he have not even used his shoots yet. By this time, the enemy Wight is in range and you may hit them with no range penalty. I use this tactic in all early games, and with all town creatures. Remember, if you do not split out the 1 stack troops, your other creatures may not reach your MasterGremlin in the first move. They have to reach him in the first move, or the enemy will reach him in the next round (if they have the same speed)

I was quite hesitant to click on this video because I find that heroes 3 is best played as an RPG not a strategy game. But then your last tip kind of agreed with me, so yay! haha

I also kind of dream of a mod where transferring creatures ends movement for both heroes and maybe you lose one morale per stack that dies. Also AI which employs some sort of anti-kiting strategy. All in the name of making the game quicker where it is tedious to play optimally.

That's great to hear, I was reluctant to include it but I wanted to be honest that for me (and presumably many others who still love the game), agonising over marginal movement point optimisations going into the next turn is not really fun. The fun is slowly building up a great hero / army and responding to the unique circumstances of the map you're on.

I love this game so much. Tried 4,5, and 6 but never went back to those games. Homm3 however, I usually get an inching to play this game everywhere 12-18 months and when I do, I beat all the scenarios to completion. Love the Rampart questline and I use nothing but the overpowered sharpshooters with no range penalty.

excellent tips! Definitely helps me shake off the rust from not playing this game in several years. I was surprised to see such a thriving community still going on over on twitch.

Another thing about the shooting range and broken arrow - if I remember correctly, if the unit that is 2 hexes long stands right between the 10 hex border of your ranged unit's range, it actually matters whether you aim at the front of the rear hex of that large unit. It's been a long time since I played HOMM so correct me if I'm wrong.

Love it! I'm a massive fan of Heroes II though. Have you done a t&t for that game?

Great tips, I've been playing pretty much since the game was new and most of these I didn't figure out until recent years. The one about what the AI towers target I was not aware of - good to know! This is one thing I love about the game: there is always more to learn and scope for improvement.

Fantastic - the clarification about creature stacks when facing a creature bank is especially helpful as is the (not insignificant) difference between animate dead and resurrection (not to mention how the terrain always takes place on the defender's territory )

A second tip : The AI apparently has a value for each unit about how "dangerous" it is and balances how dangerous your army is vs its army when deciding whether to attack your army or run away during a battle. But it DOESN'T take into account the state of its army. If you don't have shackles of war but do have blind, you can blind one stack at a time until the AI's entire army is blinded, and then use slow in combination with blind to defeat the enemy army without giving the AI a chance to surrender. Attack, blind, attack, blind, etc. Be sure to also destroy any ballistas or first aid tents because if the AI player has first aid or artillery it may surrender when it controls one of those units. This only works if you have quite a bit of mana to burn and your hero has a high amount of power.

#3 Diagonal Pickup : Wow. I was always under the impression that diagonal pickup would be *more* efficient. Visually, it's one less arrow on the pathfinding so it feels like it ought to be. Me finding out new stuff about this legendary game in 2023. Great video dude (^_^)b

Thank you for the fast guide/Tips. I just purchased this game via g2a and it's my childhood game on my Windows XP Pro. I used to play it together with Age of Empires 2 and Red Alert 2 & Yuri's Revenge. Good old games. :)

Finally something to refresh my memory. I have been away for 20 years from Heroes 3 and just installed the complete edition yesterday. I was overwhelmed by the AI on hard difficulty which I usually beat (in the campaign mode).

I'd like to add a tip. Having what I call hit and run heroes, that follow your main heroes to pick up resources for them to save their movement and bait the enemy.
