Unimog Offroading

Its a Mercedes Benz U1300L Unimog, this one stands about 11 feet high at its tallest point (the top of the exhaust stack) and then 8 and a half feet wide. It has been modified so the standard ones are slightly smaller.

"It's what they do" is the best answer I can give you. I was team leader of a mobile comms team in mandatory training... had a 2-ton generator trailer hitched at all times, year round, and a comms cab on the bed (basically max load). Only once did we have to dig our way out, normal mode of operations was "If it carries us, it carries the truck. Otherwise the truck will carry us through it." And mind you, that trailer was a pain in the butt, had an axle 30 cm lower than the truck.

Germany rocks. The X-ray, nuclear fission, automobiles, the helicopter, jet aircraft, the list of awesome things that grew from the minds of Germans is incredible. In the US military (Navy) we used Unimogs and they acquited themselves well.

You are absolutely correct. There are no vehicles that can do what a Uni can do. I have had the privilege of driving one once while in Europe. It was the worst terrain I have ever been in and I remember thinking "if I were back home with my Jeep Rubicon I would never even attempt to cross this, not in a million years" but my friend who owned it calmly told me to shift the transfer case into low and focus on not spinning the tires. Straight through 3 feet of snowy mud the consistency of oatmeal and across several ruts that were frozen solid. It was effortless.

That's how you drive, this guy takes a roughly seven ton truck through what looks like a clay bog and does less damage to the surface and keeps the truck cleaner than some idiots can in a shopping centre car park.

The main problem with a Unimog is when your 4 wheeling with other vehicles and they are struggling and you drive through the same stuff they got stuck in and you have not even thought about putting it into 4 wd yet!

well yes, they are fucking badass! they are simply designed for only one purpose. The army-humvee (not that sissy H2!) is basically a lot like the mog, but with a lot more tradeoffs to higher speed road mobility. back in the 50ies, it was designed as a versatile high speed farm tractor and the major design hasn't changed until today. there are age old proven concepts, that will never change! like sharks, crocodiles, the gingko tree and the unimog. the downside: a new one starts at a 130k $

If you need a very light all terrain vehicle for low speed and small load you need the SHERP. It can do all that and even swim. But low max speed and no pulling ability, small load.
