1st, Dragoon was landing operation in southern France in 1944 and 2nd... wtf? How were they supposed to pull their troops back to Europe? Allies had air and naval supperiority and still some forces were needed to hold the line so there rest could escape. Also they didn't have enough supplies and transports for that

Some stuff you didn't cover. 1. FDR, when deciding between a landing in north africa in 1942 vs a landing in France in 1943 decided on north Africa because he was slagging in the polls and wanted a big military win before the midterm elections. Due to delays the landings in north Africa were just days after the midterm elections. 2. The US was worried about Spain joining the side of the axis or at least letting German forces to pass through Spain to attack Gibraltar. if Gibraltar fell then the landings in Algeria would be cut off from resupply and would have to breakout towards morocco. The British did not believe that Gibraltar could be taken. Nevertheless, a compromise was reached where a third landing force would be sent to the Moroccan coast to secure access to the Atlantic ocean should Gibraltar fall. This landing force set off from Virginia which just goes to show that as technology improves, cross Atlantic naval invasions are possible. 3. British soldiers were taught to speak French with an American accent because it was assumed that French soldiers would be less likely to shoot Americans than British.

My teen grandson just did a podcast about Operation Torch for his Advanced Placement WWII History Class & being in New Orleans did plenty of research at the National WWII Museum started by author Stephen Ambrose, my old college professor at UNO. He wrote Band of Brothers. The podcast is called Tigers By The Fire so give it a listen. He graduated with honors after his team won the State Lacrosse Championship & he is now a plebe at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.

My grandfather was part of the wave of American soldiers that arrived at North Africa by boat. He told my dad that the water was so choppy that they got tossed around like rag dolls in that thing and he broke his glasses forcing him to only see out of one eye for half of his tour there since they didn’t give him a new pair until six months later. He had been drafted and was only given five weeks of basic training and didn’t even know how to clean his gun

Von Arnhem's own caution is what ruined Rommel's plan. He always held back forces for future battles, even though Rommel warned him that the only way for the plan to work was to go for broke. Arnhem frittered away his chance. More importantly, Von Arnhem had a moustache not unlike the Gestapo general from "Hogan's Heroes ".😂

Gear In 1940, 41 and most of 42 the Heer had: Rifle squads with K98's, one smg and one MG34. The only AT gun was the 37mm, DP 88's belonged to the Luftwaffe. Tanks were the PZ I, PZ II, PZ III, PZ 38t and PZ IV with the low velocity 75mm. And air superiority. From late 42 the Heer had: A higher ratio of smg's and some MG 42's. Some 50mm and 75mm AT guns. Some up gunned PZ III's and PZ IV's and Tigers. US forces had no air support at Kasserine Pass.

A little-known fact is that the British No. 6 Commando unit was outfitted with US uniforms and weapons for political reasons. My father saw it with his own eyes as a cabin boy on one of the transport ships. This was a war secret for years, and was only openly talked about relatively recently.

A Proper Cuppa Yes Von Manstein was a really good Field Marshal but Rommel was even better as a general, see how he led the african campaign and he was respectful of pows. Hitler said after the murder of Heidrich by commandos that every commando squad that is captured must be put to death without question, Rommel like few, never complied to this order, its why I say he was a good man

Yav Yav He over-stretched their lines on a number of occasions, which severely hampered their progress and plan in N. Africa. Sometimes, it was going against orders of those above him or on par with him. He failed to inform that Italian leader (don’t remember the name) on certain things, just leading his troops into battle, and he supported Nazism. I’m lead to believe he knew of, and did nothing about the concentration camps and the extermination of many people. Seems a little bit contradictory or hypocritical, no?

A Proper Cuppa well, very true I agree, but say one german general that wasnt at very least supportive of the nazi regime and Ill reconsider my opinion. He led his troops ( the german at least ) to victory for several months even if he was largerly outnumbered thank also to his lieutenants like Oberst Ponath. As far as I know him, he wasnt a bad man like Heidrich or Sepp Dietrich.

One of the things about WW2 that I can't understand, is the inability of the Axis powers to work out their communications (codes, Enigma etc) were tapped for most of the war...

Probably because the British only acted on vital interceptions and intel, they purposely didn’t act on them all, for the reason you just pointed out, if they acted on everything, the Germans would figure it out pretty quickly. Check out the recent film about Alan Turing, it shows at the end how they knew they couldn’t save everyone, even after breaking the code

The strategic abilities of the Allies was at best adequate for the task (and at worst dismal), and not the very least comparable to that of Rommel. The Allies won on logistics only -- and this proves that whatever strategic genius you have, logistics is all.
