Did she just say as part of her disclaimer that "alligators aren't normally a threat to humans"? You think that is possibly because people don't normally swim with them? I hate when folks try to make it seem as though wild animals are making a mistake when they come for humans as if we are exempt to the rules of nature.

Most gators really aren’t much of a threat to us if we don’t invade their personal space. I’ve encountered them thousands of times here in FL and they’re normally quick to retreat. That said, only a fool would enter the water around a 12ft bull. Especially this time of year when they’re territorial.

That gator didn't look big enough to think of him as prey. It probably had a nest nearby, or was otherwise being territorial. He appeared to be in an area where people rarely go.

He did tip, the gator literally knocked him over! It was the tree branch on the other side that protected him. He held on to his paddle, he righted himself quickly, and he didn’t panic. Also, I don’t think the gator really wanted him for food, more like a GTFO of my area shove.

I run at night. This usually hasn't been a problem for me, until I was doing Army stuff in the Gulf and one pitch dark night something grabbed me by the cloth and skin of my thigh, and yanked me off of the trail and into the grass. I carry a tazer for rapists, muggers, amorous officers, etc. and if I hadn't had if that night I would have been a missing person. They are so strong! This one took me down like I weighed nothing. You have no chance of fighting a gator. I have scars from its two punctures. Two teeth! That's all it takes!

Respect to the guy for being cool under pressure. However, I can tell from his accent he is not from Eastern N.C. There is a reason locals don’t go kayaking in the swamps and this is part of it. Alligators are native to Eastern North Carolina, and have not been hunted for decades until recent years, which has allowed population to increase. This coupled with new developments and housing built in wetland areas will increase interactions. Glad this man made it out safe.
@sunmoonstars0369
@sunmoonstars0369 3 жыл бұрын
kayaking in swamps by yourself doesn’t sound smart or safe anyways. I live in the northeast people kayak everywhere, it’s crazy huge up here even the winter, if you drop a few yanks in Carolina your swamps would be full of kayaks and the gators would have no choice but to move inland.

@@KentPetersonmoney the farthest north in NC is Merchants Millpond State Park and Dismal Swamp by the Virginia border and think this is the top of their range. Well I feel for you, places like that are some of the most beautiful, wild and wildlife rich spots left. I believe that's what this and other kayakers kayak to see and experience. This gator may have been guarding her nest, may have been sunning on a log it isn't clear. Both situations would give results we saw but are entirely different and warrant different actions. They don't get mad or hold grudges, want to eat us or boats. Like any good mom they will protect their nest and this from the video didn't appear where a nest would be. They lay in sun to raise core temp to digest food. If approached quietly they make their escape to water ( I've had them dive under boat soaking me with water) and judging by what I could see , this was that not an attack.

@sammylacks4937

I guess that's up to the individual paddling. A longer kayak wouldn't made a difference . A gator nest is up on the banks above, hopefully above high water. This I don't believe by what can be seen a nest site. I live paddling distance from this snd if she was protecting a nest she would have stayed putting herself in between nest and threat. That gator just wanted to get away to where it was safe. Sometimes it's in padders,direction they try to use to get there. I guess when you have lived 🎉around them your comfort level is more than others. If I went to grizzly country to hike,, camp whatever I'd pack more than spray. I guess I'm trying to say I fear that like some do watching this. He got a rush lol no doubt, but wasn't in any real danger. And ... a good story for the grandkids

This occurred on the Waccamaw River not far from its source Lake Wacxamaw. It's a large natural lake that's been home to a population of Gators all or most of my 64 years here. Gator population around here has bloomed in the last 20 - 30 years first in the lake and surrounding canal then spreading to the many swamps , creeks and canal / ditches that are part of this state. We've not had any other close calls that I am aware of. I am certain this incident happened from kayaker unknowing c getting to close to nesting female. Residents know feeding or molesting are highly illegal. We have learned to respect Gators and they fear us. Two exceptions could be like this nesting female and mating/ territorial males that can be heard roaring during this time.
