The squad with Lawson, pyscho T,Ellington was probably our best starting 5 ever and they could dominate either end..i think our best squad ever.. But this team was special to me in so many ways and i grew to really love this entire group..they had rough talent and skill that had to be developed. They worked so hard,they had their hrarts ripped out.but stayed together, still improved and berry became a special leader and developed every aspect of his game..and defined this team playing this championship game on 2 sprained ankles...sprained ine in quarter finals,semifinals he reinjured it and completely rolled the other one over and i thought he was done.it was legit bad..how he got turned around and ready to start in the championship game I'll never know..love this above all.

Partially true. I also felt that Few's decision to continue to go to Nigel Williams-Goss besides him badly reinjuring his ankle near the end led to the Meeks block and the game closer. Gonzaga may have lost anyway, but Nigel deserved a better chance. The biggest myth of this game is that Meeks dominated Karnowski. Karno was missing 3 footers. No defensive player ever, even Bill Russell, can stop a big that close to the basket when he's skilled and has a major height and weight advantage. No one. I saw every game Karno ever played, and he dominated centers far better than Meeks who were his height. Meeks did his best, but those were, as you say Gabe, point blank shots.

Carolina shoots 35% from the floor, 4 out of 27 from 3 point range, and 15 out of 26 from the free throw line and somehow still win this game?!? Such a frustrating team to watch at times. Still feel this is one of the most underrated title games ever. Very few times do we get the two best teams in the nation. Gonzaga was not only the best offensive team, but they were a top 5 defensive team. They dominated most metrics, which factors in SoS. But North Carolina was right behind them in those metrics with a coach with plenty of final 4 experience. Only two things were bad about this game. The refs were terrible, and the bad calls went both ways. It was if they wanted Zach Collins out of the game who was the most gifted player on the floor. The other was Nigel Williams-Goss, one of my all-time favorite college players reinjuring his ankle. He made so many clutch plays, but when he hurt his ankle, game over. Coach Few should have used him as a decoy, but the big game dominator insisted on taking the tough shots. I felt so bad for him when Meeks blocked his shot for the game winning score. Even if healthy, Nigel may have missed but he deserved a better chance. But all teams who win titles need to catch some breaks. Another reason this game was so important is that so much of what Gonzaga does is based on the Carolina System. When Few first landed the GU job, Roy and Wanda took him under his wing at Nike events. Few looked up to Roy so much.

How about GU's Karnowski and all the layups he blew? Forget the open 15 foot UNC jumpers. There were 7 or so layups that Karnowski missed in this game that Coach Few said after the game he makes 97% of the time That was not the result of Meeks' defense of the hoop. When you are that deep into the lane and are that much taller and weigh that much more than your defender, you can only miss shots as result of it being your own fault. People forget that GU had the #1 adjusted defense in the nation in 2017, which factors in SoS. They were tough to score on. I hate to say this about Karnowski, who is the winningest player in the history of NCAA D-1 basketball, but Justin Jackson failing to nail the occasion 12 foot jumper is different than missing a 2 footer as a 7-1,, 300+ pound center with superb touch. What was actually AMAZING about the Heels in this game were all the tough shots they hit. The Hicks shot against JWIII near the end of the end of the game was one of the toughest shots I've seen a college basketball player hit in the history of the NCAA tourney. People forget that GU was the #1 adjusted defensive team in the nation in 2017 at Pomeroy. You cannot GAME the Pomeroy ratings as they incorporate strength of schedule. The reason why that 2017 Zag team went to the final was their defense. They've many better offensive teams.
@dalepress15814 жыл бұрын
@@MattSmith-iq1ld Sort of my point. Whether UNC missed shots they normally make, or missed because of good defense, the Zags did not capitalize. Karnowski choked, Really no other way to put it. The refs let these two teams actually play the last 2 minutes. UNC won that two minutes.

Totally disagree. GU was the #1 defensive team in the nation according to kenpom. The big difference between this Zag team compared to many other others is that they were ELITE defensively. UNC was not just unlucky for their shooting %. IT was because the Zags were super elite on defense. They beat a super elite defensive team in South Carolina that beat Duke. You cannot fake out the Pomeroy stats because they factor in strength of schedule. GU was the #1 defensive team in nation that year. It wasn't a fluke. UNC was to be commended for winning this game.

I hated how CBS and Turner said that Meeks played great defense on Karnowski. A bunch of B.S. When you are 3 feet from the basket, and you miss a layup, no defender can stop you when you are that much taller, stronger and weigh more than your defender. Karno also had outstanding touch around the basket. He just blew it. Meeks did nothing defensively that Karno had not seen. He had played against great centers during non-league play during his career. Coach Few said he was missing layups that Karno would nail 97% of the time. It was clearly the biggest factor in Gonzaga losing the game. This was a very tight game. It's not like Karnowski needed to go 12-12 from the field to win the thing.

@@harp1288 2017 was the best imo although I will say this year was exceptionally awesome. I mean this year was really really good too. This year, Florida Atlantic, who would have ever envisioned ever was in it that would be like saying we will make it to the college football playoff. North Carolina will in football this year although that is more of a likely possibility, then Florida Atlantic going all the way to the final four my gosh! Florida Atlantic would be like not even wake forest making it all the way to the final four it was a feat that I mean nobody saw coming I mean nobody even dreamed of that reality it’s more of a reality like I said that we will make it to the national championship college football playoff this year. The Tar Heels will then Florida Atlantic going all the way to the final four in college basketball this past year, that was truly something nobody nobody saw it was about as big as TCU making it all the way to the national championship to play Georgia in college football. This year Florida Atlantic did the unthinkable. They went all the way to the Sweet 16, and took down some powerhouse teams, they went all the way to the elite eight I forget what the bracket was but I think they may have played Kansas State. I can’t remember 100% off the top of my head but they beat them. I think it may have been at Madison Square Garden to make it all the way to the final four wow that was a story! This year was pretty phenomenal also. How about Jim Larranaga making it to his first final four? How about San Diego State? I’ll say that this final four was arguably pretty special also, and I’m not even a fan of any of those teams I definitely watched the national championship let alone the final four it was pretty special too but just seeing this year was pretty special as well though even though it wasn’t our year to not even make the tournament at all for that matter, but just seeing those four teams, Uconn, San Diego State, Miami, and Florida Atlantic was just mind-blowing! This year’s final four knocked my socks off! It was so fun to see Dan Hurley, forget that he’s a Dookie, or has a Dookie connection, win the national championship! It was also cool to see Brian Dutcher have a run. He had a great season! UConn won the national championship. They are not exactly our rival per-say, but we are indeed no stranger to their basketball program. We do play them occasionally in Chapel Hill. We do play the Huskies we absolutely know them. They absolutely know Carolina Uconn is no stranger to the Tar Heels at all. Without a shadow of a doubt they know us. We are like a second-fiddle rival to them. It was cool this year also wasn’t it? It was also cool to see early on Farleigh Dickinson take down Purdue that was identical to UMBC versus Virginia. It was a repeat of UMBC. That was just something that will go down in infamy. You know I'm not even a gonzaga fan I've always liked them as a second favorite but with the way Goss played I mean how good he was then hurting the ankle and staying in the game he was the mvp of this final four and championship
@bulletTusnami4 жыл бұрын
Not really...Joel Berry was playing with 2 sprained ankles and hurt the whole tourney. He powered through a whole game...Goss couldn't gut out 90 seconds.

@@bulletTusnami what do you mean goss couldn't gut out 90 seconds he didn't leave the game no matter how much his ankle was hurting
@bulletTusnami4 жыл бұрын
PJ K you stated he was the “Real MVP”. Joel Berry STARTED the game on two bad ankles...Goss took 2-3 shots on a bad leg and missed, but you’re giving more credit than the guy who outplayed him...on two bad ankles. Smdh

Last time both teams met, UNC dominated Gonzaga 98-77 in the South Region Sweet 16 in Memphis, TN (2009).
@MattSmith-iq1ld4 жыл бұрын
UNC dominated everyone in that tournament. They were by far and away the best team in the NCAA that season. In fact, it can be argued that Gonzaga gave the Heels their best game in that tourney.
@bulletTusnami4 жыл бұрын
@@MattSmith-iq1ld it was actually LSU in the 2nd round. LSU crumbled in the last 5 min, but outplayed UNC until then.

No they didn’t outplay is they went on their spurt and we answered with ours...then reality set it and both teams became exactly who they were the entire season. And Ty Lawson was playing on one foot too.

Played a great game, but no center ever, not even Bill Russell, can stop a 7-1, 300+ pound center with great touch when he's 3 feet from the hoop. Karno missed point blanks that I saw him countlessly convert against bigs better than Meeks who had a size and weight disadvantage. He is given too much credit for Carolina's deserved victory. Even the NWG block was when NWG badly hurt his ankle again. I could've blocked that shot. But Few had zero TO's and couldn't set up a play for someone else.

As a Carolina fan, I've got a lot of respect for the Zags of Gonzaga University. I've actually predicted the Zags a perfect season, the buzzer shot VS UCLA had to be one of the greatest shots of NCAA March Madness ever.

Your men beat a team that was far better than the nation gave them credit for. You cannot "game" the kenpom.com metrics system. It incorporates SoS. GU was #1 in the nation going into this game, and anyone who knows anything about basketball could tell you that Gonzaga had a really good, high major style team. They had 2 McDonald's AA's and a roster full of top 100 players. UNC beat a good one.
@bulletTusnami4 жыл бұрын
@@MattSmith-iq1ld Dude, you are sadly mistaken. Gonzaga's SoS wasn't even in the top 30 that year. They played 2 REALLY good teams, but pretty light compared to UNC's, which was #1. When you play Duke 3x, VA 2x and UK 2x in one year...I think you're playing the "Best of the Best".
