@@rx2878 UNC has always been a carrier yet never asked for unequal distributions or publicly complained about others not doing enough. It's the face, heart and soul, the most crucial member as evidenced by all of the clutching and clawing going on. I will remind you that FSU pushed for all the failed expansions over T-Road objections and diverted investment from football to other sports. UNC has always underachieved in football, so any success is gravy. It overachieves everywhere else. FSU's sole purpose was to be a football tentpole and it agreed to be so. Regardless of Basketball and academic excellence, neither the SEC nor the Big Ten are going to take Duke. It’s all about football and football money. The leading candidates for Big Ten expansion, IMO, and in rough order, are Fla St, Notre Dame, UNC, U of Miami. Really no others fit. Extreme Outside possibilities include Utah, Virginia, Clemson, Kansas, or maybe even poaching Missouri and/or Texas A&M from the SEC. The only possibility with Duke would be to add them as “Basketball only”, similar to the way Notre Dame is currently in the BigTen for hockey only, and Johns Hopkins is in for Lacrosse only. $$$$$$$$$$$

UNC is so pivotal to the SEC and B1G's efforts to build the best P2 that DUKE could be coattailed. The SEC had a standing invite to the package for years (and perhaps still do). UNC/DUKE is a unique asset.

Completely agree with your assessment. I think FSU even more important than ND. B1G can’t get kicked out of Texas AND Florida. So I think you nailed it and in order for both tiers. I would say others may get in if a dance partner insists. (Eg ND insists on Stanford.) Basically though any second tier on your list plus potentially Stanford only gets in if invited as dance partner for tier 1 team.

UNC and UVA have been rumored to be teams 17 & 18 to the SEC. Large state schools with large media markets not in the SEC footprint but adjacent to states with SEC schools makes them very attractive to the league. Maybe Kansas and either West Virginia or, in a miracle, Notre Dame, could be 19 & 20.

I’d be shocked if Notre Dame chose the SEC over the Big Ten. All their traditional rivalries, barring one, are in the Big Ten. Plus, they are close to Chicago and considered one of the two Chicago centric college football programs, with Northwestern. The Big Ten is HQ’d in Chicago. But yes, UNC and Virginia would probably go to the SEC.

Academics are a factor in realignment. The B1G wants AAU academic schools. AAU schools bring in more money in research than ALL of college football and college basketball combined. Hypothetically, if you're the B1G, do you bring in schools that add $100M in revenue each, but nothing academically hurting your academic brand, or do you bring in schools that each add $75M in football revenue and over $100M each with their AAU academic reasearch?

As a BIG TEN fan UNC intrigues me more than anyone else in the current ACC. FSU or Clemson might not be good fits. Duke? No way. Same for Miami and their 15,000 (if that) fans at home games. Nothing would kill expansion interest as much as an empty stadium in the eyes of the higher ups who will make the call.
@tarheel7406

The comment is an example of why UNC should not pick the B1G. The MARYLAND board reeks of apathy, and I don't see the B1G expanding heavy enough south to offer enough current and natural rivals, much less to address its demo concerns. Much earlier, I counted UMD and considered UVA, UNC and a Florida school the minimum to make it worth the risk. That minimum rose over time; now I can't see it ever being enough to counter r what the SEC will offer after the dust settles. Being "national" is not an asset.
