Danny, a big part of the ''fun''' in your informative videos is listening to your sharp - crisp and concise narration. No wasted words, no mumbo-jumbo. Just accurate descriptions and novelties. In this video (Tallahassee sub), I am reminded of days gone by before I-10 and there was just US90 and the old SAL. My dad would make those long 3-4 hour drives as I would watch for a block signal and the occasional ''doll-arm'''. Those were the good old days and you help me recall those days. Thanks much.

Mr. Harmon, Great video, CSX they know how to move freight trains. I live about 45 minutes from downtown Houston Tx. The Union Pacific and the BNSF share a joint line, on a light day they still bottle neck, they really need to get their act together, the UP dispatcher is in Omaha, the BNSF dispatcher is Ft.Worth, we have a 2 sidings 2 miles on 1 and 1 mile on the other, and they still get jammed up. The problem is we've only got 3 grade crossings. The problem is the trains meet here every morning, so if you get caught on the other side of town, you are there. The CSX don't seem to have problem.

Yeah a lot of lines are being mothballed, traffic rerouted, The biggest chunk of railroad NS has mothballed was the Virginian Main from Princeton to Deepwater all through freight has been rerouted, not sure how much CSX has changed although their traffic has slowed a bit. If you ever do come, try and find your way down route 16 it will take you through the Coal Heritage Highway a very historic drive (you might need to do some research on the towns though) it takes you through the Winding Gulf Coalfield (my stomping grounds when it comes to filming trains) there is a lot of old coal mining remains there, and if your lucky you might see a coal train. If you ever do come up to WV take a GPS, and don't get lost, cell phone service is very slim in the mountains :)
@gravelydon70729 жыл бұрын
+loganbaileysfunwithtrains I can tell you that there have been a lot less coal trains on the line. In fact, CSX is doing major trackwork on a good bit of it during the down times. MOW equipment is parked at the Greenbrier, Clifton Forge, Gauley, and other places along the line. New ties and new welded rail going in. Instead of waiting for the upturn, they are taking advantage of the slack time.
@loganbaileysfunwithtrains6069 жыл бұрын
NS has done the same they have replaced the ties, rails, and have done larger projects like replacing some of the crossings and upgrading a few of them. But traffic has definitely declined.

Hey Danny, Wonderful Video Would Love To RailFan Sometime in Central Florida, I know you've been keeping busy up north in northern florida, but it would be a great adventure to meet you on the Old A line even though SunRail owns pretty much everything here but I still see some good CSX Traffic down here. I wish one time you could help me out one time i was stranded on a lynx 102 in bound bus next to the Orlando Chamber of commerce and there was a CSX train blocking our way and it would have been great to hear on radio what the real reason for the blockage was. Because we had to climb over the train and walk about 2 blocks to Lynx Central Station. Other wise we would have been stranded.. Keep up the good work Railfan8909 Out
@csxfloridafunnelrailfan30659 жыл бұрын
yes. the state of Florida owns the section of the ex Atlantic Coast Line between Deland and Poinciana and is now called the Central Florida Rail Corridor and operates Sunrail commuter service on that section. The Sunrail deal paid for the CSX S line expansion project from Callahan to Winter haven. CSX can still operate freight trains through the CFRC but only at specific times.

+FDNY8231 A lot of the aspects are the same but a lot are different, too. These signal rules apply only to the Ex-Seaboard System of CSX. I hope to do an NS signal video sometime later this Fall.
@csxfloridafunnelrailfan30659 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, Norfolk Southern signals are based on the route the train is taking while the CSX ex Seaboard system signals are announced as the speed you take. for example a medium clear on the CSX is a diverging clear on NS.

from what I have read from Railroad Signals on FB, is that PTC doesn't require signal upgrades. is just the fact that many railroads just want to start off with a new slate and new technology and the signals because they are up to date. it is hard and costly to try to get a part for a signal that is 60 - 70 years old. so you have a dramatic decrease of maintenance costs and plus you have all the technology readily available to you. So the reason why they are cutting out the signals are so many of them are not even made anymore.
@distantsignal9 жыл бұрын
+BBT609 Yeah, I've heard that but everyplace that CSX does an upgrade, they always install new signals. I think they're trying to standardize the whole network, which makes financial sense.
@BBT6099 жыл бұрын
+Distant Signal exactly and it makes sense. I love the little comments you have there. no new Walmart n such. i wonder how those SCL DDs sounded like giving out five number train lenghts?? would be very interesting to hear.
@gravelydon70729 жыл бұрын
+BBT609 Some of the older ones do not give out the length of train. And I'm wondering if that may be the reason why. Seems those units also have problems getting the number of axles right too. Last trip north on the AT we caught two of them with the wrong number of axles. 160,160,160,162, 160 160, 160,......, 162, 160, 160. The ones with the wrong totals did not give train length. Wondered if someone had stuck a track car on back with a portalet on it as a joke. :-D
@gravelydon70729 жыл бұрын
+Distant Signal Have you looked at the 2014 CSX Book of Rules? Including wayside signs, cab signals, and regular signal it is 24 pages long. It is broken into 3 groups for the track signals, Standard, Chessie, and Conrail. The sooner they can standardize, the sooner it will be easier on the engineers.

@jaberosier98537 жыл бұрын
Distant Signal there is still one train that occasionally runs down the AN but it only goes the first 30 miles of the track. The rest of the 60 miles is shut down due to a trestle having a 120 foot section burned to the ground by a wild fire. You can actually see the rails just hanging in mid air over nothing. If you ever get a long break and chance to come back up to this part of Florida, I'd be down to show you all the cool things on the AN I have found

How much pounds per yard does stick rail weigh. I know that ribbon rail is 136 pound per yard.
@jamesshanks26145 жыл бұрын
Stick rail went from 25 pounds per yard to the biggest ever used in the US 155 pounds per yard which is what the Pennsylvania used in electrified territory under the GG-1's. Up until recently welded rail was simply put stick rail welded together at a rail welding facility. It generally moved in specialized welded rail trains that are anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 mile in length. 25 pound rail was commonly used on industrial and the old Maine two foot gauge railroads of which there's a few still operating.
