While watching Thangalaan, there are only two possibilities: either you won't understand a thing, or if you do, you'll be stunned. The way the story is filmed is incredibly delightful to watch. Entertainment and film experience are two separate things. Those seeking only entertainment might not understand what is happening. But for those with a phenomenal interest in the narrative and who want a true film experience, this is the most powerful movie yet. I've previously written that Pa. Ranjith competes with himself, and that's why Thangalaan surpasses Kabali, Kaala, and Sarpatta. You may even have to forget about the past Pa. Ranjith while watching Thangalaan. In this film, we see KGF (Kolar Gold Fields), and those who think the object of the story is gold might get confused. The message of Buddha is the direct object, and gold is used merely as a metaphor, a myth. The film's uniqueness lies in its mystical presentation of traditional folklore around a hidden treasure, where someone mysteriously guards it, especially involving snakes-a common theme in folklore. This mystical representation, however, comes with historical context. Those familiar with Buddhist literature and revolutionary ideas won't struggle to understand the narrative. There are two layers to unravel: one personal and one social. On a personal level, it depicts the inner conflict of the mind, while on a social level, it shows how inequality is created and how humans are degraded. In a story told by a protagonist, when the Brahmins are shown as invaders, later, the British are similarly portrayed when they arrive. In the first invasion, prompted by the Brahmins, a king declares Buddha as a demon and decapitates his statue. Blood from the Nagvanshi guardian spills on the ground, symbolically turning into gold. This signifies how people were alienated from Buddha's egalitarian ideas, and how an unequal society built the caste system and gained wealth by exploiting the labor and blood of the marginalized. The gold mine in the film is not the true object but merely a metaphor, a myth. Later, fragments of the Buddha statue are buried, and people are made to believe that it's cursed, reinforcing their superstition. When the British arrive in India, driven by greed for the same gold mines, they force the untouchables to work in them. Thangalaan's son, named Ashok, is also shown as being driven by greed, but he has an emotional connection with the buried Buddha statue. (This could be a metaphor for how Emperor Ashoka rediscovered the lost history of Buddhism) Ashok eventually gives up his greed after being in proximity to the statue, highlighting his transformation. This parallels Emperor Ashoka's journey in history. The Buddhist concept of "Mara"-a representation of confusion, ignorance, and inner turmoil-is used mystically to show the struggle of reaching enlightenment. The gold mine, in reality, represents the untouchables' realization of purpose, self-respect, and empowerment. The gold they find is the aspiration for liberation from injustice and inequality. When Thangalaan stands before his people and gives a speech, he is shown glowing with a golden hue, symbolizing his enlightened state. At the root of all conflict is attachment and greed. It was greed that enforced inequality, that robbed people of their humanity. And when humanity is taken away, the only way to reclaim it is through Buddha's inspiring message, Atta Dipa Bhava-be your own light. This is the essence of the film's story. A must-watch. 💚 Thangalaan Buddhism.

Yes, very true .some of our Tamil reviews were against to Ranjit's politics and hence they started giving negative reviews. Very sad that people have also fallen to this propaganda of negatives and started finding faults with understanding the language and so many other technicalities of the movie and branding the movies as casteist, instead of enjoying and celebrating the movie.
