i don't like how Drew is making turkmenistan sound as bad as North korea. Although there may be similarities, I feel that turkmenistan is nowhere as bad as North Korea. I don't think there are labor death camps in Turkmenistan nor is the threat of being detained indefinitely for just small things such as taking a piece of their propoganda. I have been to North Korea and I agree that people look unhappy and fed up, they're very shy and inwards, and also a bit wary of foreigners at first, but once you actually meet them and earn their trust they're nice and you'll love them. One of the reasons they won't approach tourists is because they only speak Korean, being accompanied by government guides all the time also makes them unwilling to approach you. But there will be moments when you'll be able to interact with the people, and no, they're not actors.

You can get a Turkmen transit visa valid for up to a week, in which case you don't need a tour guide or pre-booked tour. There are a few catches though. First both the entry and exit must be done at land borders, not Ashgabat airport. So you will need a visa for onward travel into Iran/Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan. Also you will need a vehicle as public transport is scarce. Second, there is a lot of additional bureaucracy involved. Local laws say that visitors on transit visas need special permits to visit the north, east and west areas of the country. Since you must exit from another country than the one you arrived in Turkmenistan from it means going into these areas for crossing to or from Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan, so those permits are a must. It's unnecessarily complicated, but for those wishing to travel freely it may be worth it.

Everyone knows about North Korea, but I am becoming more and more fascinated by Turkmenistan. Pyongyang and Ashgabat have such regal, laid out, and conceptually and beautifully brutalist feels to them. The way that Pyongyang’s gray color contrasts with its red, white, and blue flag and how Ashgabat’s white and gold contrast with its green, red, and white flag are astonishingly appealing and give off an aesthetically and almost cartoonish dystopian feeling.

The reason we mainly see North Korea over Turkmenistan because Turkmenistan is forced to interact with the outside world to Survive. It has some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world and it has to constantly negotiate to get said gas out of the nation so they can sell it to China and the EU, 2 countries that need natural gas and don’t want to rely on the Russian monopoly. Thus when their first post soviet dictator died the country was softened to be more attractive to the west.

Well, unlike North Korea, Turkmenistan is open. They are not same at all, maybe some opinion, but the facts are this: people can go abroad freely, i am from Turkmenistan and im studying in Shanghai. People are so happy in Turkmenistan, like you mentioned, not like in North Korea. Another fact that you say no people outside, Our population is about 4-5millions people, and on summer its super hot outside thats why no one walks in outside, because nothing to do, not like in Europe where even if its 50degree, you can still walk and see some old buildings, we are not, we are middle asian country with the desert, dont forget that. We have internet tho its weak sometimes, but everyone in Turkmenistan use Instagram, everyone knows what is happening in other countries, everyone wear Nike Adidas, drinks coke. Not like in North Korea where you cant find any of these. And people are struggling in North Korea they dont eat well, even just a food is a problem. In Turkmenistan we have wheat fruits vegetables everything. Most of our adults are Fat 😅. We have everything in Turkmenistan. People have money, every family have a house. And now we arw getting more open to the world. Its just a matter of time.

Very well made video Drew, well done. I am very curious about North Korea and want to go there in the near future, but just like you said, it is very expensive. Overall though, I think Turkmenistan is better than North Korea. The prison camps in NK, the labour camps, some citizens only able to eat rice and cabbage, and so much more. Good job man

Andrew Almada because if you were born in North Korea, get ready for being trapped in your country If you were born in Turkmenistan, get ready for terrible human rights He means that at least his country has basic human rights and you can have a passport and travel and not be restricted from doing basic things
@andrewalmada5 жыл бұрын
Yara71 you mean he is lucky to have citizenship from his country? Because if you are born in either of those countries doesn’t mean you get to experience those things. I could have been born in North Korea for example and since none of my parents are from there I would of got the citizenship from them by blood that is a country that is not either North Korea or Turkmenistan. And still be able to leave North Korea on the country’s passport I am from.
