I had a Rogers drum kit from there up early 80s. I inherited it from my uncle who played in a band in Los Angeles and then he died in a motorcycle accident and I inherited his drum set and then I added on to it so I had 6 8 10 12 13 14 15 in 16-inch tom-toms with 18 and 20 inch 4 X 24 inch bass drum that I got a double kick pedal Paiste cymbals but then my ex-wife stole it from me. I’ve actually tried that with my pipe octobans and it really just doesn’t sound right to me at least. I’ll definitely try to get my hands on some of a buddy’s extra pipe ends to try these though! Small toms don’t really seem to sound that nice with a reso head unless they’re tuned down (I like to tune my toms pretty high and use larger sizes) and it doesn’t add resonance to such a high pitch, it just makes it sound a little funny

Enjoyed the video. Did you do a bearing edge or do drums like that not have one? They look really good. I'm glad you have such a good attitude for the internet drummer trolls. I've never seen anyone in my life use pinstripe heads on the bottom of a drum. Is that a marching snare? You are very entertaining and genuine. Keep it up.
@christhedrummerkimball
@christhedrummerkimball 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! In answer to your questions: The pipe has a natural kind of bearing edge--it's sort of a sharp edge around the outside diameter sloping inward. I sanded the edge a little to get rid of any excess bumps at the seams, but other than that I didn't do too much about the edges. The trolls are to be expected, and I think the best way to deal with them is by being nice--kind of a little passive-aggressive on my part, I guess! The reason I used pinstripes on the bottom is because my original plan was to go pinstripe on all the batter heads and use a thinner head on the bottom sp I put the Pinstripes on the bottom as a temporary thing, but now I've tried the Fiberskyn Diplomats on my North kit I think I've going to replace all the heads with those; I really like the sound of them. I think the snare was originally a marching snare, or it could have even been a tom--it's been so long I can't remember! I just know I loved how it looked when I covered it with the copper-clad aluminum. I just put a Fiberskyn on it, and it made it sound pretty good. Thank you again for watching and your comments, I appreciate it.

I have been thinking for a while about the possibility of a kit made from sewer pipe. I work near factories that make and store the pipes and so that fired my imagination, so thanks for saving me the effort and the surprising high cost. One tip I would like to pass on ,something I discovered when rebuilding a Mapex kit. Swap the bass drums metal hoops for wood hoops . The improvement in the sound is amazing. I am not a great fan of single headed drums as the sound possibilities with a resonant head are so much better but having said that , I like North drums and Phil Collins ! Also use resonant heads not pinstrips on the bottom. Just a suggestion . I don't understand why pairs of identical size toms ? If you have to transport and the real estate big kits take up ,then have a back up little kit.
@christhedrummerkimball
@christhedrummerkimball 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, and for your thoughtful comments. If you live close to a factory, you might be able to get some pipe at dealer cost. That's what I was able to do in college and it made a big difference in the overall price of building the drums. I'm still experimenting with heads; I'm almost finished with a video I'm making after switching out all the North CS heads for Fiberskyn Diplomats. Watch for that to come out in a week or two. I will probably switch out the heads on the sewer pipe set with Fiberskyns as well. I like their sound quite a lot. Based on your suggestion, I am going to start looking for a couple of 20" wooden hoops, too. I just saw a couple for sale, and they were Gretsch which is the type of bass drum I use on the sewer pipe set, so they would be perfect. Problem is, they wanted some exorbitant price for them! When I was in college I got rid of the wooden hoops because I thought the chrome ones looked cooler...:/ Thanks again for watching, I appreciate it!

@@christhedrummerkimball Hey ,thanks for the reply. I really am not going to build a sewer pipe kit because you have and I just wanted to hear the sound. Years ago I put Fiberskyn heads on my Rodgers kit ,The result was interesting because they only sounded good when tuned high ,great for jazz but I like a versatile sound but I found the Buddy Rich sound by accident !. Point here is that you need to try a verity of heads ( hydraulics ?) to find the sweet spot that hits the tone you need. Why not take a 6" sewer drum to a helpful drum store and if possible try different heads ,when they realize how many you will be buying you will have no problem. I live in Melbourne Australia but lived 19 years in Texas. I got so much great gear ( the wood hoops) for incredible cheap prices . I like your Mini is it a Cooper ?
@christhedrummerkimball
@christhedrummerkimball 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielreily2701 I think the Fiberskyns sound better higher-pitched, too, but with the North drums' marginal bearing-edges they sound better lower, too, because they conform to the irregularities better than the thicker heads. Yes, that is a 1990 Rover Mini. It was made in England and exported to Japan, then back to the USA. It's right-hand drive, and pretty fun to drive!

Thanks for all the videos. Very inspiring. Quick question (though I realize I'm late asking so it's a bit of a hail mary hoping for a response )there must be options available in sewer pipe for a more traditional arrangement,though I suspect the bottom heads would make it a more time consuming task.ok,so dig, I've always wanted drums that have shells formed with hallowed tree trunks ( years ago I bought a used snare I found at a music go round, made by this Australian company I cant seem to recall the name of, who used shells seemlessly carved from a single logs for all their drums. I wish I knew how it had been accomplished. That drum sounded truly far out, but the one used snare cost me about as much as my entire five piece DW kit did new . I can't seem to recall the brands name but there was no way I could afford an entire kit from them. Anyway, over the years I've asked a bunch of drummers if they were aware of any method I could use to make similar drums DIY, but none were able to impart any useful information, so I'll ask here. Can you think of a pre-made product , similar to straight sewer pipes but using wood? Or are you aware of any method a brother can use to precisely hollow logs out hisself? For use as a substitute to the PVC in your super groovy project, Without, having access to a million dollar cnc machine ?thanks so much For your time.BTW your skills as a drummer are clear, it's seems to all but yourself . It seems obvious that you must have spent a large part of your life behind a drum set,because your name is the only thing you wouldn't have had in common with Neil pert IMO your drumming is solidly in his league (accually, properly reasoned, it's a safe bet you are considerably better as of the time of this writing, in fact it'd be most unlikely he could hold a stick without assistance.if you'll forgive my utterly inappropriate implication.lol? No its just too soon and always will be.

Thank you for watching, and your kind words! As far as your question, the only thing I can think of would be to find someone with a large wood lathe to do it. The problem, of course, would be creating the floor toms and bass drum. Even the curved pvc pipe gets horrendously expensive once you get beyond 10" diameter. You might want to join a number of drum-related Facebook groups and ask them. Thanks again for watching!

Chris, I enjoyed the video. I started this morning with a couple of political videos that put me in a bad frame of mind. Then, I watched your video in its entirety, and found that I was relaxed and thinking about drums instead of politics. I too am 61 years old and have played the drums since I was 9, so I grew up during the 70's when drum set first started to be massive. Back in the day I had a nine piece Slingerland set with a walnut finish. I also saw Alan White with Yes during their 1977 Going for the One tour when he used a couple of North toms. Do you remember seeing ads for North Drums as well as Staccato Drums in Modern Drummer magazines? I always thought that they looked cool, but would be a pain to transport. Your sewer pipe drums sound and look great. They remind me of the old days when Carl Palmer, Neal Peart and Barriemore Barlow were all using 6", 8" 10" & 12" concert toms. Times sure have changed. Anyhow, I'm glad to see that you still enjoy playing after all of these years, and still have some chops: )

I think you should be able to get that snare sounding much better. It looks like it's at least 10 inches deep but I assume 14 inch diameter? Have your tried tightening both bottom and top head and maybe even tightening the snare wires? What is the shell material? I know the finish is copper but is it metal, brass, aluminum?
@christhedrummerkimball
@christhedrummerkimball 3 жыл бұрын
I've been trying different things with the Fiberskyn head I put on it, and it sounds pretty good now. The shell is wood, but I'm not sure what kind. It's an old marching drum, I believe, I converted to a snare many years ago. The copper-clad aluminum is pretty thin, maybe 1/64" or less. For the kind of rock music the band plays a deeper sound fits in well, so that's how I have it tuned currently., it's very fat-sounding now.

"Hot knife through butter" "It works as a drum" "Close but fear it is slightly off" "Primitive Pete method" "Round it off until it just slips in there" Heh hem.. OKAY Mr. .... Um...primitive Pete yeah. Spill the t. Screw driver for a hammer....? U dont say.... careful.... make SURE your hand is not INSIDE the pipe when drilling....because remember u can't feel the drill until it's in ur finger! Ur scaring me pls slow down.... Too risque' Careful what u say ..yeah A complete dweeb...yeah "Of course as you see me ream these things out" Um... No ur not making urself look like dweeb....I mean...not really. This is taking a long time. So u are going to be making two ?...of them. So 35 bucks is all on you if u mess it up you ARE a dweeb ...okay I get it But u wont mess it up cause u made them already 40 years ago so it's like ur basically able to manifest them from thought form to physical form with basically a felt marker and following the guidance of the inner mounting holes of the bracket. U bent the bracket? Oooh pro move. Nice. U know y u run into things because u are not practicing tai chi. If you would simply practice standing on one leg and then alternate, you would be less prone to accident and have less anxiety of getting ur arm stuck in that vice ... Louder: "One of the things I haven't gottent around to yet" Yes yes I'm paying attention, are we ready now? 13 64th bit for mounting of the tom bracket Aye aye Capt. "Nothing more dangerous than a dull tool as pete says" Okay I'll remember not to be a dummy.... Or have dummy friends. A dull pete or whatever. Thick plastic. Cool. How's it gonna work pops? Get longer bolts!! No. Use this device! A sideways drive with a grinding ball. But that's where the video goes bad off rail. Maybe. Cut. Wow cool attachment Yes loud Melted plastic. File. Damn only 1/2 through...why does time seem extended when filing... 19 64ths drill Dang this is tedious Yeah Why do we sand? Let's use formica compound and mold them!? Ugg cleaning them..... Whyyyyy Nevermind.... Sanding... Come on I want to play them!! Paint! Reconvene Sanding table Sanding machine What are we doing ? Uhhhhhh... Okay let's use compound clay.... And then paint or wait compound clay, paper machet' and paint....and the drill ! Let drill holes and poke christmas lights in them and make an electric light drumset and let's connect the lights passive to the amplifier and then we can......use the paper machet'and compound clay to make the drums look like king gidorah but instead of blue fur were using compound clay to make an outer skin like covering that we can carve with plastic ustinsels then use aacrylic metallic wash to look like authentic scales. We can glaze it to give that dewy finish so when ur playing them like a beast and ur headband fails and sweat is flinging from your head onto the gidorah drumset it looks natural and not dweeby. Yep rub the pipe all over and then.....dang its NIGHTTIME already? Jeez. Can we eat? ....Then come back and finish? Electric tape Omg come on. So when we make these need to set aside time.... 5 8ths In.... Take the tape and ..... What are we doing ? "Part of the joy of a hand made anything is the fact that its...not going to be totally perfect" I would argue that fallacy sir. Pls dont complain... What are we doing? Oh covering it because we are going to spray paint it? Hmmm. Okay. I think we should use uv paints on parts of the gidorah in kanji. What are u doing? Tape on tape. Hm. ._. Trim a paper plate making slits to form petals. What else can we make after this drumset? Can we turn a hatchback into a micro oscar weinermobile? And mount the drums on the roof, u stand in the sun roof, I'll drive. "Alright let's go, set it on the paint table and start spraying"....... ..

very cool video, i recently cracked my china and it has gotten to the point of no return, any suggestions for what cymbal pack to get as i also need a new crash and splash for my percussion. price range doesn’t matter too much as i would like to invest in some good cymbals
@christhedrummerkimball
@christhedrummerkimball 3 жыл бұрын
I always recommend Zildjian, if price doesn't matter. The sewer pipe set is just a practice set, so the cymbals aren't anything special, but on my other sets I use almost exclusively A Zildjians. A couple of years ago I picked up a 18" A Zildjian China type and I really like the way it sounds. Recently I got a Wuhan 10" splash from Amazon just because it was only $26 but it sounds great. I noticed they just raised the price on it, though... Good luck!

@@danielreily2701 I've never tried a Wuhan China type. The only Wuhan I have is a 10" splash which I got when they were $29.00. It sounds great and hasn't cracked yet, but I only bought it as more of a novelty to see if it was any good. Thank you for watching and for your comment!

I think you're right, but I've always used Regal Tip 7A sticks. The advantage to lighter sticks is more speed and less cymbal breakage, but I can't argue with your point; heavier sticks do tend to make drums sound better. Thanks for watching!

North drums were NOT invented or designed by Roger North (to whom he sold the original moulds)as he has claimed for over 40 years (ask Alan White, Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford), they were invented and developed by Graham Davies (rip) , a life long friend and it's about time he got the credit. He had the idea whilst looking at the flair on a trumpet and (eurika) imagined the effect visually and audibly it would have on tom toms. Among other inventions of his like the Octobans (Tama name not the original) originally designed with different lengths to be tuned to an octave, so a lot of them...12! A genius, started as a motor mechanic and even worked for Downton Engineering UK (who did engine developmant for BMC , Mini Coopers etc), their race cars which Graham worked on were legendary, and now so are his drums.👍🇬🇧🎺

How did he and Roger North connect? ROGER started marketing these in 1973 when he lived in Boston.

@@Riddim4 ....not sure but Graham was living in Surrey UK at that time, and working with top drummers as drum tech touring all over the world. Some of his percussion inventions are standard equipment, and one I know of has still not been realised.... it's as exciting as the flare tomtoms, perhaps more so.✌🇬🇧 .

Wikipedia states that in 1968 Roger North first created his drums by hand, for personal use, then in 1971 was granted a U.S. patent on the design. In 1973 he built & sold them commercially to top musicians & the public. In 1976 he licensed the rights to MTI- Music Technology Inc. to build & distribute them hoping to grow the market. In the early 80's they were no longer sold. If Graham Davies originated the concept (in the U.K.) but sold the moulds, unfortunately it seems that the "intellectual property" was not properly retained by him. Ironically, the modern concept of intellectual property developed in England in the 17th and 18th centuries though it was not until the late 20th century that intellectual property became commonplace in the majority of the world's legal systems.

@@zeusapollo8688 That's the best way to do it. Back when I did it there weren't such a thing as studio rings, and I liked the muffled sound. Now I would highly recommend the most open sound you can get, because you can always dampen it any way you want using moongels, Remos, or Aquarian studio rings.

I like a lot of drums (always have, ever since seeing the Ludwig Octa-Plus kit in their catalogue when I was a kid) so having two of each size fills the bill! I have 3 - 6" toms because one of them cracked and I thought it was a lost cause. It turns out I was able to fix it, so I figured, "never let a good tom go to waste!" BTW, the older I get the more I think I might look better wearing Kiss makeup! :) Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.
