As a bulgarian, I wonder whether the greeks would protest the country being reffered to as "Macedonia" from a regional standpoint, if the people living there now hadn't been brainwashed into having wrongful claims about the ancient historical Macedonian Empire and Alexander. Many bulgarians reffer to themselves as being "macedonian", but they don't mean it in any way connected to that part of history. Several million people came to Bulgaria after the Liberation, the two Balkan Wars and the two World Wars, many of them being from the Macedonian region. For us it's just the name of the region, even though it's a remnant from the hellenistic past.

It's not personal self-determination. She is acting in official capacity as president of her country and represents her government everytime she speaks publicly. North Macedonia is the official name that they signed a treaty to. We could always go back to FYROM. Imagine Greece's government publicly and in official capacity calling the country FYROM again. They only way to end this issue is for the Skopje to called something else. If they are called something else they will revert to their real history.

Because Macedonian civilization is very significant. It was Greek. So if the country is called just Macedonia, people will think that Macedonian civilization was of Macedonia. That's why Greece said to use North Macedonia to avoid confusion. It is not the same as Punjab. Because both Punjab was state/province. This is similar in the case of Bengal. As, Bengal civilization was an Indian civilization but after the creation of Bangladesh. Whenever people think of Bengal they think of Bangladesh not West Bengal. And even Today we have our state named "West Bengal" not just "Bengal". We don't have changed its name to avoid confusion between our state and the Bangladesh.

It was Slavic for 15 centuries and it was lost in a war, then Greeks killed and expelled all openly Slavic people while forcing hellenism on the others that remained. The real Macedonians became 50% Slavic in the last 15 centuries. The new Macedonians in Greece now are Pontic Greeks (Asians).
