As a Macedonian I will have to disagree with the "Slavic roots" part as we dont originate from Slavs. Our DNA is quite literally the closest to Albanians and Greeks than to any other nation on Earth, even Bulgarians who love to claim we are most closely related to them. In simple terms for all those who dont understand the issue, no matter what language we spoke in ancient times, us Macedonians adopted a Slavic language, end of story. For this reason alone, Greece kicked us off our lands, "Hellenized" those that stayed, and even brought in Middle Eastern Greeks to replace the locals that were kicked out. The "Macedonians" in Greece today are either descendants of Slavic speaking Macedonians or Pontus Greeks who have nothing to do with Macedonia at all. These same people now claim they are the right descendants of Ancient Macedonia. If this sounds familiar to you its because this is also the story of a little country called Israel/Palestine.
