That was the braking mechanism for the chains winch. It was on free spool and when they tried to slow it down before it hit, the load was so heavy and already falling at such high speed and force that it just melted those brake pads/shoes.

Lake Superior (or Getchagumi) is, I believe the deepest of the Great Lakes, at 406m, so a little over half as deep as the North sea. Which is probably the source of your confusion. I also find the great lakes confusing.

Serious question for you salty dogs out there: Why do anchor drops always look so chaotic? I always see these dudes cranking away on what looks like a burning manual clutch and I'm like "Why is that not damped?" Centrifugal or electromagnetic or hydraulic or something.
