Beautiful rendition of this old song. If I'd been alive at the time, all the great songs would have tempted me to join the Jacobites! ;)

+PapaNoMidokoro "Beautiful rendition of this old song. If I'd been alive at the time, all the great songs would have tempted me to join the Jacobites! ;)" Not me. The Nazis had some good tunes, too, but that didn't make their politics OK, did it? What was loved was not Charlie, a useless and arrogant aristocrat, but the deceptive dream, the false hope of oppressed people, spun around him in times when such propaganda tricks met with less justified cynicism than they do now. This is a sad song of deceived people who hadn't realised it yet, and for whom the alternative would be no better, so it's a historically important part of the tradition. This is a beautiful rendering of it.

Bonnie Charlie's noo awa Safely o'er the friendly main Mony a heart will break in twa Should he ne'er come back again. Chorus Will ye no' come back again? Will ye no' come back again? Better lo'ed ye canna be Will ye no' come back again? Ye trusted in your Hielan' men They trusted you, dear Charlie They kent your hiding in the glen Death or exile braving. English bribes were a' in vain Tho' puir, and puirer, we maurn be Siller canna buy the heat That beats aye for thine and thee. We watch'd thee in the gloamin' hour We watch'd thee in the mornin' grey Tho' thirty thousand pound they gie Oh, there is nane that wad betray!
