My version of an old Scottish song, I learned as a pipe tune when I was 10. It is about Bonny Prince Charlie, and the hope that he would one day return to Scotland to claim the throne as rightful King. It was not to be.. unfortunately, as he died in exile.

Love it! Thanks, Savageminstrel. I'm Robertson clan, a Donnachie, and my ancestors were Jacobites and fought for our brave Bonnie Prince. As I would have fought. Our Prince across the water, something in my heart still yearns..

Very well done! If memory serves, the first time I heard this tune [lyrics and bagpipes] was the classic movie, "Gunga Din" [1939], when the British troops were heading into what was to be a trap but good old Din [** Sam Jaffe] saved the day with his bugle sounding the alarm from the top of the temple. BTW, if they were ever casting around for extras for something like William Wallace or his followers in "Braveheart", you would be perfect! I mean that as a compliment of course because you look the part and would fit in perfectly. How to put it better --- you could lay down the guitar and your beret and pop on a helmet of the Wallace era and grab a sword and be ready for the Director to shout "ACTION!" . ;-) My compliments on your performance of this great tune and, indeed, your others which I've viewed on KZbin. .

For over 50 years, I've tried to identify this song. It was sung and piped by a fictional British/Scottish regiment as they approached slaughter at the hands of a brutal sect of strangling Indian Thuggee in the 1936 film Gunga Din. A lowly water boy (Gunga Din played by Sam Jaffe) saved the regiment by blowing a warning call from his stolen bugle just before he was shot to death by the dismayed Thugs. In retrospect, we notice that the movie contains imperialistic and racist overtones, as had many great films of that era. But for me, this Scottish ballad embodies the sound of courage and camaraderie, even though it was not necessarily written with that intent. I'm pleased to have discovered it last night.

Beautiful, thank you for sharing. Unfortunately my ancestor a Cameron, spied on Bonnie Prince Charlie (his sister was Bonnie Prince Charlie's mistress Jenny Cameron's attendant) and gave the plans for his forces at Culloden to the English leaders. Karma certainly bit him since he was shot through the calf and 'cut and hack'd in a miserable manner'.

What I like most about this version is that its done straight on without too much drama. That is left uo to the hearer. Paul Brady would do this differently but not better.

Patrick Cashman There is an old saying, "He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day." I think that was the idea in getting him to safety, so that he could lead his people to freedom when the time was right. Unfortunately that time never came.

+savageminstrel More than that, the Scottish people hid him (despite the enormous price on his head), and helped him to escape. After his escape, he made further attempts to recover the throne, but was unable to get help; the French, in particular, were never as interested again as they were in 1745...
