Mason catching one outside his dad scratching down the line to snake him, got times with the family, they are enjoying the time they have surfing together, and then Mason on the inside getting barreled while his dad is catching the next outside wave, memories they will cherish I am sure.

This single fins surf style is so elegant and fluid, very nice to watch. Way more authentic than the epileptic surf styles of today ( yes I’ m old, I know...)

mason is so good. he really shows how far thruster technology took performance surfing... that single fin is cool, and fast in the pocket of course, but no comparison to watching mason on his contemporary quiver of 5-somethings... i'm a bit older, and love surfboards before fin-systems, when glass-ons were the norm, and single fins were still competing with twins and thrusters a little...i really want to love the single fin...but the ride is so improved with the three or four fin set ups. thanks mason for reminding us of how it used to be...ripping is ripping!

A lot of people surf for the ego trip, the more talented, to hustle your coin with what they push, Mason surfs pure, free and better than basically everyone on the globe. It's a pleasure to watch, inspiring shit, can't wait to get wet again. Thanks Mason would be an honor to share a wave one day.

That 70's Teardrop single fin design... So under-rated, generally. And you ripped the crap out of that thing... Though I'm guessing based on the shaper and the condition - that it's a more modern throw-back design. That thing looks like an unreal tuberider. I was thinking that you should give that a go out at Velzyland. We'll be able to compare against vintage footage from your father, too. Back in the 1990's - I was living in San Diego, quite a bit. At that time, you could go to garagesales on any given weekend - or look thru the pennysaver - and find several classic boards, often in good shape...brought down from someone's rafters. $50 or less, could score you a dreamboard. We were riding them in everything from sloppy beachbreaks, to bigger Blacks beach - even dredging reefs in La Jolla. I came to love a few of mine - and took them with me, all over the place. Rincon, 'Bu, you name it, they ripped it. Sadly, in more recent years, those kinds of finds, have become exceedingly rare - and they tend to fetch top-dollar, as wall hangers, and for collectors... It's a shame, too. I'm guessing that there may be few great boards, still out there, Brewer's and Chapman's, probably hiding under some porches and in garages. Keep your eyes peeled.

Flashes of Mark Richards. Before the twinny. Back when our boards were a limiting factor, when we took of on the peak, not 50yards behind it, when an off the lip meant your nose would be placed 6 inches above the lip, before we "busted our fins out". When style was conciderd in judging, before 10 year olds were doing 360s on perfected quad fin cnced rockets with rails that never catch, and before we had to take off on absolutely deadly pits in order to push our limits, things were NOT better, because it was not NOW.but I do miss those days. Aloha (goodbye old days) And be careful and go for it. Torn by my Gemini nature. Simcha

Mason, curious what you think surfing a single fin is like on a non-longboard? In my limited surf experience I have only surfed single fins on longboards. I’m a curious kook and I want to ride anything I can ;) If you answer my question, I promise the first time I come to Hawaii I wont surf and I’ll spend lot of money
@anotherworldviewispossible4 жыл бұрын
They work awesome. Scope-out garagesales and recycler pages. The old 70's teardrop design, usually around 7' - was often an everyday/everywave board, back then. Pushed-forward wide points, and extra volume, make paddling and catching waves a breeze. You ride them a little farther forward. Watch Mason in this video - or Michael Ho, Dane Kealoha, and the late 70's rippers - for ideas on how to make them work.
