Drone footage of 1-16-2021. Check out these +15-25 ft (Hawaiian) and +35 ft face. Caught this clean up set mowing through the line up of skis. The skis jetted for the horizon only to find themselves looking in to the face of a BOMB clean up set.
**Watch for the 2 skis that almost make contact! As well as the last ski gunning it to the clouds!

Count the smaller waves between them and you can get a ball park number in the teens ... if you lose count a big one is on the way. Most boaters don't like them either.

@@dieselscience yeah there are other tricks an experienced water man picks up on, especially if they have lived at the break a long time. You usually have some strong indications the as the set builds, each peak a little steeper, seems like tide is pulling back but it's not time yet, things like that.

Saw a video from when one of those sets went through - the guy on the back of the ski was shouting "you're gonna have to turn around, you're gonna have to turn around". You could hear the panic but you couldn't get a sense of the scale of the wave though. This puts it into perspective - unreal.

This explains the situation much better than the close-up news view. Maybe these Jet-Skiers need headset walkie-talkies so they can communicate between them or maybe someone with this drone that saw these waves (set) coming could have given them advanced warning. -Either way they should have rode away from these waves and not over them. Worst case is having a 1000lb ski coming off a wave and hitting someone.

I'll put it here since this is the raw footage. By my repeated stopwatch action, our astronaut free fall time is ~2.27 seconds, but for fun lets call it 2.3 to spice a little. That equates to a 25.9m drop (85ft)... and he's hitting the water at 80.1 km/h (50 mph)... We can also make some assumptions about the wave by the amount of time going up leading to it being in the ~21m (68ft) face range. "Remember comrades, hit eject button after launching rocketski..." You can see our test pilot mount the ski after, all good yah?

When people are in the line up whether on a board or a ski there seems to be this hive mind effect where in a moment people just do what everyone else does....it's interesting. So many of them should have turned back in instead of trying to beat the set out. Crazy.

As someone who SUP surfs I don’t like condemning any form of water-sports but ski’s are just to much of a noise and air pollutant especially just for photographers and lookyloos skis are a great tool for rescue. Those last two that launched had no business out there they didn’t have enough experience or they would have known to turn and outrun the whitewater. Looks like from the comments the last one got hurt really bad I hope they have a good recovery 🤙
