Excellent video! What you did is keeping a safe distance from a very volatile situation! I thought the utility pole was going to burn as the flames were licking it big time! Back in 2000 their was a major gas leak right at the Morris Plains Parsippany border. Rt10 had to be closed in both directions! Finally the gas company arrived and shut off the gas. The biggest problem for ALL is that the ruptured gas main was in the woods!

The reason for the big response is, I'd say, because of the risk of a gas explosion. Actually, since the gas was burning, it wasn't that great of a risk. BUT, _if_ there was a gas explosion, there could be multiple buildings on fire, and multiple victims in need of attention...
@EyeWatchThemAll6 жыл бұрын
Also, that area (North Wildwood and Wildwood) has a LOT of wood frame constructed houses, the shops on the boardwalk, plus the boardwalk itself is all wood. The heat from those flames could've easily touched off a multiple dwelling fire.

Excellent video, buddy! Looks like they let it burn until the gas could be turned off. That's actually the safest option, because it lets the gas burn off, rather than dissipate in the environment and potentially seep into buildings, where it can result in an explosion.

Benjamin Esposti very true mate. It’s also quite hard to put it out with water anyways. We have tested the fire crews quite a few times at our yard for training. Most times they can’t put it out. Dry powder is way more effective. But it has its limits also depending on the size of the fire.

how many fire fighters does it take to put out a gasfire
@PhillipRhodes6 жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking, none. The way a fire like this is extinguished is generally by cutting off the flow of gas somewhere upstream. That work is actually done by the utility company. BUT... what the fire department does in a case like this is protect exposures, and prevent the fire from spreading. In some rare situations, the FD may also use water streams to push the fire / heat away from a certain valve or component that the utility company needs to access in order to stop the flow of gas.

Why do many people? What else is burning? How many does it take to turn off a gas main?
@44R0Ndin6 жыл бұрын
It probably only takes one person to turn off a gas main, but they have to be from the gas company to do it. The gas company likely doesn't keep someone posted to respond to emergencies 24/7, so it takes a while to get someone out there to shut the gas off. Meanwhile all the fire department can do is make sure nothing else catches on fire, which is exactly what they were doing.

Not sure on this department set up but in my area we work on a m.a.b.a.s.system mutual aid box alarm system. It gives us the back up and resources needed when we get the job for instance if we show up for report of a structure fire we have 4 other departments on the way but if we have something bigger than originally reported we will call for 2nd alarm which will dispatch further companies to support us in whatever way we need be it back up or response to additional calls while we are tied up

Looks like it's 4wd. Lifted and if you look you can see driveshaft going to front end.

Good video Demon racer. However seeing as it was a gas fire I would have been videoing from the other side of town. Why is it the personal driving the pickups and SUV's have to park right on top of the scene?

Funny how so many people are know it all's, but have the slightest clue of what truly needs to be done. I was a firefighter for years. You treat every call as an emergency no matter what, because you just never know.

Bet your ass it's an All Hands call when the Dunkin' Donuts is in danger!

Why didn't they just shut off the gas to the area so they can cool the gas pipe down and put out the fire?
@1andonlybigmike606 жыл бұрын
ALBERTO MADEIRA JR if you shut off gas to the area then you’re leaving every home and business in the neighborhood without gas. Also if you put out the fire right away, the gas fire then turns into a gas leak, which is worse cuz you can’t see the leak at that point. As long as it’s burning you can see where the gas is
@demonracer26 жыл бұрын
ALBERTO MADEIRA JR they were attempting to secure the leak when the fire started, the fire doesn’t simply just go out like the other comment when water is applied, the lines were stretched to cool/protect the exposures. The crew that was securing the leak was injured when the fire started and more assists were needed before they could completely stop the leak
@albertomadeirajr78246 жыл бұрын
Demonracer2 That is a gas fed fire right if you kill the source (the gas) wouldn't it been easier for them to put it out??? I sure the businesses around the area wouldn't have mind the gas being shut off seeing the circumstances.

You do NOT put out a natural gas fire....you turn off the gas. Put out the gas then to have unburned gas leak.......BOOM

Protect the exposures and let it burn.
@j.t.johnston30486 жыл бұрын
Over reaction by command put the rest of the community at risk by putting out an all hands call for this. As long as it's burning, the initial response could have handled this with PD assistance to evacuate the immediate area.
