Northampton, where the Town Hall is down a side street. That says it all really. A city-sized town with village-sized ambitions. I grew up there and left at the first opportunity. There are shockingly few leisure activities in the town for its size which I think is why everyone is so apathetic there. Hopefully the expanded University will bring a little more life into the place. The best thing about Northampton is not Northampton itself but the countryside and the villages around it. Well done for giving it a negative review. Hopefully, someone with some influence may take note.

Hi Dael Ra, it is always hard to write a negative review as it can stir a wide range of emotions. Northampton was listed as a tourist destination by the book I use for research, unfornately I don't agree with the book. As rightly point out the nearby countryside has some excellent scenery, walks and attractions. Thanks for commenting.

I tend to agree. I think it’s quite fertile though. There are some local council projects that seem to never materialise though. Since 2014 they’ve promised all kinds of stuff that never happens. I think the demographic puts off investors as it’s low income Town. There really needs to be more business emphasis on the centre. More opportunity and really people there need to start caring more about the appearance of the town. It’s like Hobo apocalypse on Sundays feeding the down and outs

I'm from Northampton and yes, it's always had it's problems. However, the big plus point it has is plenty of green spaces. Abington Park, Eastfield Park and the abundance of greenery around the shire. The town centre is dying, but you know that's reflected across the UK but go down St Giles street instead of Abington st and you see a different story. It does need a more forward thinking council, and one that values the resources it still has. Northampton has an abundance of creative people and a few quid here and there would see changes.

northampton when i was growing up in the 80s and 90s was a brilliant place to shop on a saturday with the massive market and shops. nightlife was brilliant to with lots of pubs and clubs to choose. then i moved to nottingham and then glasgow so spent 25 years away from northampton. i know covid took alot of the shopping away, as folk went online and still are, but the main dissapointment after coming back from glasgow is the amount of foreign people in that town centre. it is like passport control. puts people right off, it did me and not been in town since. no money when they get here and shops popping up everywere for them. i had a shop in glasgow for ten years and used my own money.

Thanks for sharing your insights, hayley. It is sad to see so many people in the comments echo your thoughts on the downward trend of northampton town centre.

It is asham as used to go to Northampton Collage as a teenager, and used to travel through the town centre on the bus. Obviously, if I needed any shopping or just a bit of retail therapy, I would get off the bus and catch the next one. As didn't cost any extra due to a bus pass. Anyway, you had a very high footfall walking through the shopping centre to get to the bus station, however, they have moved the bus station to the edge of the town centre. Which has not helped the shops. Obviously, online shopping has not helped town centres, but I was amazed at how quiet it was in your video. There are also a lot of retail parks on the ring road which has also sucked the life out of Northampton.

Can't believe you didn't show the Holy Sepulchre Church on Sheep Street. Built in the 1100s and only one of 4 round medieval churches that are still in use in England today. But yeah the town is dying if not already dead. Just gotta look at the empty space that was once the old bus station that was demolished over 10 years ago to cement that it's dying/dead. Architecture and history. The only 2 things good about Northampton.

Thanks Bradley for your comments. Hopefully the town has a good plan of investment lined up and thanks for the suggestion regarding the church. Enjoy the rest of your week.

It is when you compare British towns & cities with their continental equivalents that you really understand how lacking they are by comparison. There are places that are interesting but there are so many places that are less than ordinary. This opinion has been underlined by the restrictions to travel that have been imposed and our ability to enjoy something better has been curtailed. I have been to Northampton - once.
@spectrumwalkingtours2 жыл бұрын
I think the point our failed to mention was Northampton could be much better with investments. For example the market place hasn't great buildings and with a little bit of money invested These could rival any other cities or towns in the UK. If you take the Guildhall in Northampton as an example If you take the Guildhall in Northampton as an example You can see how great these building scrub up.

Honestly, I looks for me like poor people tells story about beautiful life in their childhood, but I suspect that they had nothing apart from bike, they probable used alkohol and drugs, maybe could earn on the street but now telling stories. I know this by living between English and from listening to them, they have really hard life’s, difficult past, divorced families, no possessions, no money. But they pretend everything. I remember Northampton 20 years ago, it was little more clabbing, but I never had fun or dance in the disco, because it was not possible to catch a contact with citizens and get real friendship, people always hate others here, it was never funny for me here. Later was crisis and streets got empty as people stays at home like before. I remember empty Kettering road 20 y ago, now accommodated and lively.
