Protagonist Catherine enjoys the spooky atmospherics of the Gothic literature popular at the time and views her stay at the titular abbey through her literary preoccupation.
Invited by a family whose son she is romantically interested in, she begins to suspect-erroneously-that something sinister is going on.
Though likeable, Catherine is not terribly bright. She is further deceived by a social climbing friend and her brother, who courts her in the belief that she is wealthy.
Despite her naiveté, she ultimately ends up with her preferred beau, none the worse for her encounters with the duplicitous schemers.
English writer Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey was first published in 1817. Jane Austen's novel Northanger Abbey adopts the conceits of the Gothic novel in mocking the social mores of the time. Austen uses Catherine's obliviousness as a foil to the machinations of those around her, to comic effect.
The satire Northanger Abbey contains many important themes, including romance and relationships, as the importance of marriage makes characters seek a good match; deceit and manipulation, as John and Isabella manipulate Catherine and others around them; and coming of age, as Catherine evolves from a clueless child into a mature woman.

I love this novel and it’s themes. I wish there was more said in the last chapter as things were wrapped up about Catherine and Eleanor‘s friendship. Eleanor was instrumental in helping to convince her father to consent to the marriage however there’s no further exchange between Katherine and Eleanor after the letter acknowledging her safe return to Fullerton. I guess as the reader we can just imagine that has sister-in-law‘s they become friends and hopefully have lots of children to brighten their families.

Don’t go by this strictly for your book report. There’s a lot of detail left out. And I wouldn’t watch the 2007 movie and use that strictly as your book report since there are many important details that were changed or left out.

You summed up the conclusion as if they were married immediately but you left out the part they had to convince his father. And that Eleanor (Who marries a Viscount) was instrumental in convincing general Tilney that Catherine wasn’t poor and it was a good match.

You completely missed that jagged James Morland and Isabella have already met and liked each other. James having spent some time with the Thorpe family during a previous break from university. They haven't met for the first time in bath. That should be OBVIOUS to you. You missed it
