Sandwiched along a belt-line of Interstate malls I-275s Northgate Mall was just another one of those.. Cincinnati in the 70s was mall hingey building one seemingly every few miles. But Northgate Mall, in the Northgate township despite eventually being the smallest of those managed to outlive them. However it seems the time is finally up, once featuring Sears, Dillards, Macys, JCPenney and over 130 in line tenants, the struggling Northgate is now awaiting the wrecking ball. With redevelopment in sight. Join me today tho, as we tour Northgate Mall in Cincinnati, Ohio, and tell its story and how this metro center mall was one of the last..

Me and friends wandered this small in the early 90s a lot. But they get boring fast. And too crowded. Which is their ultimate downfall. People just hate being around other people.

Agreed. It’s like 15 mins away from me and I still go there to pick up shoes I order online and to bbw. I wish they bring this back to life with stores. I will never prefer the modern outdoor style shopping malls over indoor malls.

The fountains and lush foliage in malls growing up always made the environment feel more “alive”. Even when foot traffic was minimal from time to time. Now malls are sterile. Like a hospital.

Indeed. There were fountains under each of those skylights where there is now a circular tile pattern on the floor. Every single one of those was a fountain. I remember when they were shut down and later removed.

Some beautiful aesthetics in that mall and at the same time so sad to see it in such a failing state. Cincinnati was SO over malled and it sure is showing. That redevelopment rendition looks really nice. Sure hope something positive happens to this struggling property.

As a Little Rock resident and lifetime Arkansas resident, I had NO IDEA that Dillard's was Little Rock based! I'm a huge dead-mall enthusiast and I'm binge watching your entire series! This is FANTASTIC content! Well researched, clear video, great narration, provides the history of the places you're visiting, just absolutely awesome all the way through! It really makes me want to go grab some footage of a mall that used to be known around here as a dead mall, the Hot Springs mall (currently known as Uptown Hot Springs Mall).

The mall's original appearance had a sort-of Brutalist motif similar to the Washington Metro subway stations. The colors were all subdued earth tones (brown, dull orange, plain concrete), with the exception of the blue astroturf conversation pits. The original hanging glass ball light fixtures were pretty interesting as were the parking lot light towers. The original floor was brown brick.

I grew up in the Cincinnati area. As a kid and teenager, we used to frequent all the malls in the area. Tri-County, Northgate, and Forest Fair were the three malls we visited the most. I've been watching your other videos of the malls in the area, and seeing them bring back such great memories of growing up and hanging out there. It's sad to see what they've become now. Thanks for preserving these amazing spaces in these videos. It's nice to have a way to go back and revisit them.

I’m from Minneapolis, Minnesota. I used to visit family in Cincy in the summer as a kid, probably 1996-2000. I remember that me and two cousins participated in a back to school fashion show that was in the atrium in-front of the Sears. We got a gift card to use in the mall as payment. I definitely remember the machines you filmed right outside bathroom hallway in the corner of the food court. Core memory unlocked. Funny, the little details you hold on to. Thanks.

It actually gave me the "creeps" watching this video, as I had frequented Northgate since it opened in the 1970s, up until I moved to Dayton Ohio in early 2002. So many great times shopping there with my first wife and my sons. My wife actually worked there in the late '70s at McAlpin's in the men's alterations department.

This is probably the mall that I've been to more than any other in my life. I'll try to list off each storefront, if I can remember what it was, if it was ever different from what is seen in the video, and maybe a bit of history if I can remember anything. I've been going to this mall since I was a baby, and met many girls there for first dates through my teenage years. Lots of time spent here. 2:06 - This has always been a Cincinnati Bell retailer as long as I can remember. Cincinnati Bell got bought out by Verizon several years back, but this is where my parents bought me my first cellphone. 2:22 - This has been a Smoothie King as long as I can remember. The Japanese place next door, just out of frame to the right, used to have an Asian guy (no idea if he was actually Japanese) standing out in the main walkway with a chef's getup handing out samples, I remember that. 2:33 - Think this has been a China Experience as long as I can remember. I can't remember what most of the stores that are drywalled off used to be. 2:42 - All the illuminated curved glass between each stall is also original to my memory. I remember wondering how they got the glass to light up like that and thinking it was so cool. 2:54 - I want to say this yellow tile area at one point was a Chik-Fil-A. I believe the teal store right before it was a Subway based on the leftover logos on the food assembly line. That checks out, they used to have a neon sign. All the signs were pretty much custom neon. Very aesthetic. 3:03 - Great Steak obviously. I don't think this has ever been updated as long as I can remember. The glass block and blue neon sign are of course iconic for this mall. 3:07 - This used to be an Arby's. Or if it was not, the Chick Fil A was here and the Arbys was down a couple stores to the right. But I'm about 99% sure this was an Arby's. 3:24 - This was a Sbarro. 3:29 - I believe this used to be a Great American Cookies, but later turned into a smoothie or ice cream joint somewhere around 08-11ish. Though, you show another one later at 4:22...Maybe they moved or were two companies. I remember the colorful tiles on both always being there. 3:51 - I think this was the Limited Too. 4:00 - To your right used to be a bookstore, I wanna say it was a Christian bookstore but not 100% on that. That Dakota Watch kiosk has been there as long as I can possibly remember. 4:22 - I want to say the nameless store in the middle of the frame used to be a GameStop. A couple stores down to the left used to be an independent retro game store. I can't remember the name...Game On or something like that...? But I bought a LOT of used games there over the years. They had a full size Simpsons family sitting on a couch in their front area, except Homer was missing his right arm. Probably a promo for the Simpsons movie they got on discount somewhere after it was retired. But nobody ever knew what happened to Homer's right arm. Great old game store. Miss that place. I believe along this stretch of stores also used to be a Journey's shoe store. 4:35 - That theater never used to be there, I believe it was just another entrance but it may have held retail space too. I think it used to have an anchor. I remember for a long time they had it drywalled off with a massive wall and nobody knew what they were doing with it. In the center of that circular floor tile by the entrance to the theater, used to be a huge fountain with a raised edge, we would always toss pennies into it. They also would set up their Christmas tree in this area and have a train you could ride. 5:06 - I think this originally used to be a Kay or another bigger name jeweler. Always a jeweler though. I smacked my head on one of their signs they had out on the floor as a little kid because I wasn't watching where I was going. Who knows what I was distracted with.... 5:21 - I believe, not 100%, but I believe that store used to be the Gadzooks. I didn't remember what type of clothing they sold as I was pretty young still, but I remember they had the front half of a vintage VW beetle that they hung belts off of the back side and had shirts and other merch in the front trunk that was open. Neon sign of course, too. I believe the metal-adorned entrance next door was a Suncoast. 5:27 - The massage parlor on the left used to be an EB Games. Yes, a Game Stop and an EB Games used to be visible from one another's stores. 5:38 - That Jewelry Palace kiosk has always been exactly there as long as I can remember, with that same red neon sign. I believe the store just to the right, or maybe a couple stores up or down, used to be a KB toys. I bought many 1/18 die cast models there years ago, as well as my Atomic Purple Gameboy Color, both of which I still have today. 6:37 - This was obviously a jewelry store. I don't remember which one. Maybe a Zales. 6:49 - At this blocked off area, there wasn't too much down there, but I believe that is where the Macy's anchor used to be, after another 100 yards or so of stores. Think there used to be a Lids down that way, and a store called Sci Fi City that sold all kinds of tabletop gaming stuff and Magic The Gathering cards.
@Genecaster
@Genecaster 10 ай бұрын
6:51 - That Foot Locker has always been a Foot Locker. 8:21 - Yes I believe that storefront to the left is what used to be the Sci Fi City. The Macy's used to be a Lazarus. 10:02 - I think this used to be a Victoria's Secret, but I'm not 100% sure, there was one along this stretch though. 10:28 - This was a Radio Shack. 10:42 - I believe this central tile used to have a fountain. I'm not 100% sure if it was by the Sears or what used to be the Dillards though. It was smaller than the main one and featured angled sides. I spent many many weekends browsing the tool section in that Sears. Looking at lawnmowers and various Craftsman tools back when they still used to be made in the USA. I actually got a pair of boots on clearance at the Sears there that I still wear. 11:14 - As you look into the Sears, straight ahead was the jewelry and watches counter. Behind that, those short shelves and shelves in the walls back there used to be the shoes section. Off camera to the right was Womens clothing, then into the darkness is the Men's clothing and an escalator upstairs which led to appliances, home goods, and I believe bedding. Stuff of that nature. If you kept going into the darkness you'd reach outdoor goods, sporting goods, and eventually the sacred Craftsman tools section, as well as an auto service center that also sold tires. As the shot pans to the left I believe this used to be the children's section and also more of the Womens' clothing. 11:21 - Kathy's Happy Organs used to be at the other end of the mall in what used to be a Willis' Music. My brother actually took lessons with Kathy's when they were in the other location. Ran by some very nice people. They used to have recitals out in the main thoroughfare where students could play what they learned for their families and the public. The store here used to be... I want to say it was some place that sold replica swords and medieval combat gear. Though I'm not sure it was always that. 11:40 - This flooring and tile with the black diamonds spaced in between the main tile pattern I think is totally original. It was always like that as long as I can remember. 13:14 - This used to be a Disney store. Toward the back they had a massive pile of Disney-themed stuffed toys and a projector screen that played Disney movies. 14:05 - The Spencers and Auntie Annes that are in the stores among those on the right of the frame have always been there as long as I can remember. I remember going into Spencers and looking at lava lamps and toilet humor stuff with my dad when I was little. 14:36 - I want to say that long white store front to the left of the frame used to be a Kirklands. No, not like Costco brand. It was what I'm just going to refer to as a "Mom store" - Trinkets and just general house decor, some outdoor decor too I think, some of which was quite fancy and delicate. I remember it because mom always used to refer to it as the "Don't touch anything store" or something of that nature. I think Dad and I got her at least one Mother's Day gifts there. 14:59 - This Ashley outlet used to just be more storefront. With on the corner being a music store, Willis Music I believe, and later Kathy's Happy Organs which as stated earlier, relocated to the other end of the mall. The Cincy Nails store where the lady in pink is standing on the left, used to be a Frederick's of Hollywood. I remember being younger and my face going red every time I walked by trying not to be caught staring in at the various raunchy posters of ladies and mannequins in lingerie as I walked by. It may have been 1 store down but I definitely remember this store hahaha. 15:13 - Yep I remember this period, thanks for jogging my memory. It was the Penney's but for the majority of my memory of this place, was just a huge blank drywall wall where the building used to be hahaha I do remember the Penney's though now. 15:45 - This was the Dillards where Marshall's was. And, if I am incorrect about the second smaller fountain in front of Sears, this is the other location the fountain would have been. 17:19 - Of note, DSW and Ulta Beauty, as well as the Michaels craft store also attached on the outside, have no mall access. Yet Burlington and Marshall's do. 18:01 - This area used to have several trees in in-ground planters that reached up to the skylight. 18:06 - The Hot Topic has always been there. In that line of stores, to its right used to be a GNC, then the other direction at one point there was a Limited Too, and I think at one point, but maybe not at the same time as Limited Too there was a headshop or place that sold bongs, pipes, and other weed-culture-adjacent items including tees and incense holders. Right next to the Christian book store, mind. 18:30 - The mall used to be attached to an Applebees right by the entrance which later became a small chain crab boil place that I am not sure if they are there anymore or not. Right next to the Cincinnati Bell former store. Also one of those stores on the right of the frame, it may have been the Cincinnati Bell store, before it became such, there was a tiny arcade-space not unlike the Amazing Spaces, but a bit bigger. It was called "TILT" and I remember the neon sign being in this absolutely awesome blue italic font straight out of the late 80s. They had arcade games and a handful of prize machines. 21:07 - I feel like I'm driving to work. That's about all I got, thanks for documenting this place. I haven't been inside in a couple years now as I've just not had any reason to go there. I've kind of outgrown most of the stuff you'd get at Hot Topic or Spencers for the most part, and the outside anchors usually don't draw me in to the actual mall. A lot of the remaining stores that aren't Hot Topic or Spencers don't really have much that I'd be into anyway.

I work across the street from this mall and I know a guy that owns a business there and he’s told me a few times that the people that own this mall make enough money from the outside tenants, specifically the restaurants, that they have zero plans to renovate or do anything to attract more business. He made it seem like the spaces are pretty cheap to buy inside due to this.

11 September 2023 Appears Colerain Township purchased the Sears portion of the mall for $2.2 Million stating they needed some place to put excess cash but have no immediate plans on what to do with the building. The attached parking garage is in horrible shape.

Absolutely amazing video! I was wondering if you know of any abandoned malls/places in the Cincinnati area that I could explore?

Definitely some of these malls, Cincinnati Mills, Tri County, the old Western Woods has an abandoned Dillards hidden around back and I’m sure there are plenty of old Kmarts and such for you to check out, thank you!

On my way north I really wish I could’ve stopped at that mall however, I just ran out of time in my 3rd day. I definitely wanna make a stop on my next Ohio expedition.

If you are online..how long will tonights video be. I would like to plan either going for a walk before its gets dark if it is really long, More than 25 minutes and I'll be in the dark or just wait and get one in after the video if its short before it gets dark.

Our local mall used to have a Fletcher's Organs back in the 80's and early 90's. I too spotted "Kathy's". 😁

There is no "city of Northgate." It's Colerain Township.

Metro Cincinnati is not doing well. That's the real problem. It has a lot of poor people and even middle class people have low wages and can't support retail.
