For a little more explanation, from my understanding of it the reason why the mall is so dead is because the owners. Most of the owners have been east coast lawyers and stuff, who all only cared about the money. The local management wasn't the greatest either (which my family has some personal history with them as well). Most of the management over the year only cared about if they were getting money, so they charged some crazy prices to set up a shot inside the mall, and drove people out without a care because as I said, most of the owners had no real connection to the actual location or the locals. All the locals (myself included) really want the mall to thrive, but a new store will pop up, then close down in almost a month. Actually, there's now a Harbor Freight department store where the old JC was, and they just blocked off that entire part of the mall, so it's even smaller now. it's a sad situation but one that doesn't seem like anyone can really help.

Like even 10 years ago it was very much dying, but there was still buisness. People still shopped there and all but one or two of the slots where full with shops and things to do, especially around the holidays, Halloween included

Used to shop there (1988-early 2000s); didn’t know it closed. Was speaking of West Oaks last week.

Used to shop and see Santa at Westoaks when I was a kid in the early 2000’s. Watched it slowly die, and my family stopped going there all together by the late 2000’s. The area of Houston the mall is in is downright depressing and has been in decline for years. Just never ending signs, concrete and run down strip centers.

I’m actually in Ottumwa working at this mall and it’s so much worse in just 2 years. The only retail left inside the mall is Claire’s, the jewelry store and Dunhams. It’s terrible.

The music is creepy and nostalgic. Did you overdub that or was that actually playing in the mall?

In the early 1990s, my future ex-wife before we were married, worked in an office tower across the street from Greenspoint Mall. She worked in the corporate offices of Wicks 'n' Sticks and Deck the Walls. I was a phone technician, and I would travel all over town. If I was working in the Greenspoint area, we would meet at GM for lunch.

Midland Mall got bought by a 37 year old entrepreneur. It is now going through a revive and doing quite well for itself.

this should be a scary video to people who are awake and see what the military industrial complex is doing to this country. no less how online shopping rose because of the covid atrocities and the transfer of wealth in this country. And during that time crushing small businesses with covid lockdowns and online grocery shopping and Amazon sales. you will see more of this no less with open Borders with millions of people coming in with no education and skills right as A.I is talking people's jobs along with online ordering. no to mention kids growing up socializing with technology on cell phones and not going to meet people no less having worse communication skills because of technology plastics environmental issues and covid mask issues putting kids back education wise. but what do I know. ps neat video

This is so fun to find!! I live here, and grew up in this mall, and still go there occasionally lol. If I remember right, the mall was built in 1977. It used to have Osco Drug where Planet Fitness is, and in the other half of Dunham's, our local Lion's organization does a "haunted mall" attraction, to raise money for their group, it's pretty fun! When you were here, they were getting ready to move in Harbor Freight, where you guessed it, Sam Goody used to be lol. I've tried to get a roller skating rink in there, but the owners and leasers are so difficult to work with, not worth it to try and use the empty space. Anyways, nice video, you've captured the essence pretty well! It's definitely a dead mall.

Malls should become neo spiced 24hr/nightlife themed club arcade strip kind of like Las Vegas casinos. It makes so much more sense plus a safer experience for social life entertainment. Maybe even become a cultural taste of that city's vibes.

It's such a shame but I'm glad I got to see the last few years it was lively in the early to mid 2000s as a kid. God this makes me feel so old even tho I'm just 22 lol

I moved to Houston in 1975, West Oaks Mall was the happening place. I use to go to there to theater on weekends. Sadly, by the mid 90s things started to change. I remember the day that we stopped going to it. It was close to Christmas and we were out shopping at the mall like we always do when we headed to our car. Some poor lady was attack in the parking lot, shot, and killed. Real shame, I loved that mall.

I had pictures of the mall from the early 90s before they changes the tile and everything. I went back there with my parents a few years back after seeing Sal's video. sort of cool that it's still around

My high school friends and I made West Oaks "our" mall when it first opened. The renovation to a ranch theme has left it unrecognizable. We watched movies at West Oaks, ate dinner at Birra-Poretti's, and shopped at stores like The Limited and Benetton. The boys always wanted to go to Babbage's and check out the software offerings, such as they were in '84 and '85. It was very much the Galleria of the west side of town in those early days, and even when we had little money to spend, which was the norm for us middle class kids, we liked to soak up the vibe of all those aspirational consumer goods!

I walked in to that mall literally hundreds of times. I lived in the large apartment complex next to the mall when it was called Shannon Way. $4 movies at the theater

For years this was one of my favorite malls for many years. It was very clean and had a great variety of stores. I liked the architecture too. I went by it around 6 or 7 years ago and it was already near the end. Watching this video, it looks like a sci-fi video. It seems to be in such incredible shape. It is like customers were here and then, mysteriously vanished. How weird... how very sad.

I went there in the early 2000s as a kid. Went back recntly with a friend. At this point its sad that the owner won't sell any spaces for rent. Sucks. Theyre letting it rot and my friend and I have some business that would probably freshen the place back up
