Felt like the Start of the New Man Utd for me when Sharpey appeared on the scene, shame he never managed to step up as Giggs did. At the time was hearing that Lee was very into the 'Madchester' culture at the time, and possibly indulged in some substances he shouldn't have. Really don't know if that was the case, but his great, exhuberant personality could lead some to think he was. Edit... That issue is addressed at 18.30 ish. Good stuff, I had never heard him talk about it before.

Can remember a game against livershit and we went, 1 nill down down a john barnes gaol.I'm sure sharpy put 2 crosses in and sparky and McClair got then and and then sharp went to wing put ball in and a young beards more score a volley to make 3/1 utd. 3 GOALS IN 7 MINS TO turn the game

Fabulous player. Will never forget him.Badly underestimated by Fergie ! Real shame. Sharpie was a perfect player -absolutely brilliant !

Lee got a bit of stick for partying bit unfair because as he says he couldn't have kept playing if he had really done so much damage. Love the fact that he still respectfully talks about Alex still even if they butted heads. Saw the dream team doc. Alex was singing his praises and talked about when lee got Ill and how scary it was and he had to make sure Lee was 100%. Cathy in a interview said when Alex found out about lee in hospital " he went drip white with worry and was really upset" And went raving mad when the papers suggested it was drug related and stopped the papers printing stories. Like the way lee treats fans very much them and us. And he's grateful

33 isn't particularly young for retirement. People say Best retired extremely young, after having 11 seasons at Utd. Sharpey is a mildly tragic figure of that era, closest thing Utd had to a 'Spice boy'. A wild, if fleeting talent, squandered by drinking culture (and injuries).
