Congratulations on 100K subscriptions! I've been watching that number grow these last few weeks as it was getting close. Besides the scenery, your eye for detail and the thoroughness of your reports I think switching from captions to voice-over really brought in more people. There was something nice about the captioning and silence but one had to watch twice sometimes, once for reading and once for just watching. Talking allows for so much more information and observations and lets your personality come through. I agree with some here that you should make a special video to mark this occasion. I loved that York stone train station.

I love that route, for its old-fashioned quaintness. If you're ever down there again, be sure to alight at Bridlington and take a look around its station, which I think once had seven platforms - and the still extant ornate booking hall and refreshment room! I hope you also took some time to explore Hull, which is one of those surprisingly interesting cities that tends to get by-passed by tourists and visitors alike... As for the 170s - you hit the nail on the head when you said that they are quite reasonable trains to provide the service ON THAT ROUTE. For that is the key. I think you're based in Inverness, aren't you? In which case I can totally understand your dislike for them - as they are definitely NOT suited for such long, heavily-used inter-city type services! Capacity issues apart, I've always thought of them as the most comfortable second-generation DMUs, as their seats are well padded (though well overdue a refurbishment, at least on ScotRail) and most of them line up well to the windows - which also have that all-important shelf for your elbows!

I really like what Northern has done with those 170s, considering they used to run between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh they've really kitted them out nicely and are using them on more appropriate regional routes too rather than city to city connection with large numbers of commuters, hence the Scotrail upgrade to the class 385s which they often double up on the Edinburgh line

The class 170 are still sometimes used for journeys between Glasgow/Edinburgh to Aberdeen/Inverness. Thought these routes also now use the more suitable Intercity 125 4 carriage long trains

I’ve always liked Northerns interiors, much better than they were with SR. 170s used to double up and run in 6 car set when running between Queens Street and Waverley. The 385s run in 8, but 2 of the carriages are first class so realistically there’s not much difference in capacity. The 170s are also still used on a lot of services between Glasgow/Edinburgh and Aberdeen/Inverness.

I am amazed at the opportunities available in the UK compared to the overpriced, old, slow rides we endure in the States. I couldn't move around in my own city for that price. It is wonderful how much effort is put into the rail system in the UK. We'd use it if ours compared on any level. The rails in the States are owned & controlled by the shipping companies. That's why we can expect to sit on a side rail waiting for a shipping carrier to come by first. Passengers are not a consideration here. Merchandise trumps us on a daily basis. That's why we drive everywhere. It's sad. As for your journey, I do have to wonder about those head rests on the seats. I'm on the short side. Not quite sure how I'd fare with that. It might have been useful to see how it was for you. But then, you can't film yourself from a distance. I just have to wonder if they work for anyone. Happy travels. Enjoy your weekend.
