I watch this documentary every so often. It always makes me feel good. I grew up in the north of England and was heavily in to Northern Soul. The north could be a very grim, cold and wet place, but there was something about going to an all night club and dancing to NS that just elevated your soul. I never got rid of that feeling, or at least the desire to recapture it, and although I'm old and living in California now I try and keep the spirit alive and go dancing regularly. Keep the faith.

This proves Northern/Rare Soul fans are a special kind of person, Wigan, Torch, Wheel, Catacombs, Blackpool Mecca etc were frequented by people who were trailblazers in Social Cohesion and Integration, people came from all over, we were and still are the BIGGEST FAMILY in the World brought together by this unique music, you instantly know a "Soulie" when you see one, where ever you go in the World you know you are always welcome at a "Soul Do" and NORTHERN SOUL lives on -KEEP THE FAITH !

Remember Scotch corner was front righthandside of the stage. Then Bath or swim in the pool around the corner, then get Bus back up to Aberdeen and Home. My best memorys are with Northern Soul

I'm quite new to Northern Soul (I was a toddler when this was filmed), but I've been watching loads of documentaries to find out more about it. This one really stands out, firstly, because it's contemporary, but also because it sets Northern Soul in its cultural context. It's really easy to see how exciting NS was for its followers, given that there was so little else for young people in the 1970's in industrial northern cities and towns. Boring jobs, parents content with old fashioned pastimes, and other young people listening to the cheesy pop of the day or just going to the pub. No wonder black music from America seemed so exciting and exotic, and people would travel for miles just to spend time with fellow fans and dance to great music, I can totally understand why it was the highlight of people's week.

really enjoyed watching this, I was an avid allnighter fan and followed the circuit, .everyone cared about each other, nice to each other, I remember a couple paying my bus fare from Bolton to Walkden, thats what happened, if you could help someone out you did. .black bombers would keep you up for days, I remember dancing in beachcomber and then going onto all dayers, lost touch with everyone now cos I live in Australia, but that was a very special time in my life.....Keep the Faith = Northern Soul

which then lead to a lot of undiscovered records being discovered to feed the dancers appetite for something new ...yet still having that familiar soulful sound and in the process several clubs opened up in the north of england and Northern Soul became a living legend ....and whenever people would comment on a record or the scene in general the saying was and still is ....Keep the Faith ....( so it was like saying ....Keep Real Soul Music Alive ) and it became a sort of badge to wear with pride

i didn't see a single overweight person on that film. changing the subject...... a friend of mine who used to go wigan confessed in a moment of anguish to his( lovely irish) mum, "mum, I,ve been sneaking out in the middle of the night and going to wigan casino and taking drugs (amphetamine) I cant cope", reply. "now don't you worry Michael, no son of mine would do a thing like that !" i.m so glad I experienced the 70's

Hi Lankywang - yes, was there that nite too, and was totally crackin' up cos couldn't relax or dance with the lights being on! I never went back to the casino - it was full of divs and 'sightseers' and was a total misrepresentation of what wigan and the scene were all about!

The moment was the thing! Cameras, recordings were an no No! This scene was fabulous in its escape, singularly felt in a collective embrace - we were royalty in our own right for eight hours of magic we were both free and oblivious to the nonsense of the 'outside world'. Those that really 'got NS' were then and remained immortal.

I'm so jealous that I wasn't born early enough for the Northern Soul era. Dancing all night with your mates to brilliant music, surrounded by people who love doing it as much as you do AND without the dreaded hangover the next morning sounds like utter bliss. I'm doing some research into the Northern Soul movement & I've googled many a time the meaning of 'keep the faith' & haven't been able to find a suitable answer. Anyone there who knows the answer & wouldn't mind helping me out? Thanks!

There's more social history from Wigan on KZbin. An "Arena" series was made about George Orwell, and part 2 is named after his book "Road to Wigan Pier". It was made in 1982-3 (6 years after this one) and contains interviews with people about what life was like up there & whether Orwell's portrayal of Wigan in the 1930s was fair.

People wanted something different,a new beat,a new scene all their own,in the youth clubs and former dance halls of Northern England, fuelled by Tamla Motown, and the appreciation society,so many US bases around the UK back then, commercial radio being in its heyday. Then Dave Godin coined the phrase "Northern Soul".And the rest as they say is history, soundtrack to lives, lost nights and weekends,to love and loss,so much more than just a craze.I love it still.

Quality that, son. You keep on reaching back to the music of my youth and accuse me of living in the past - hilarious! I'm glad that you enjoy it, it's timeless endurance is there for all to embrace, but you clearly have absolutely no idea of what the 'mingo crowd was like, so god knows how you reach your rather silly conclusions - certainly not based on any personal experience is it?
