While doing fieldwork in the Marlborough Sounds, Nick Harker, visited a predator free island home to a large population of northern spotted skink (oligosoma kokowai). These skinks are quite rare on the mainland and consume the berries of native plants and, in the process, disperse their seeds.
Unfortunately, there weren’t many native berries to tempt them, but Nick had some ripe bananas at camp (which are usually used for baiting tracking tunnels and monitoring native lizards) and captured it eating.
