I would add that Northern Exposure was ahead of its time on issues of women, spirituality, native, race, and gay rights decades before other shows were socially conscious.

Broke the third wall also. A no no in the TV industry, but really they could push it to that threshold with the cast they had. It got producer Josh Brand in trouble with the network but he did not quit, but was approved to stay as long as he did not demand a pay raise.

I feel the same. I'm 57 and this show gave me a license to celebrate my quirky and eclectic tastes and in turn celebrate each character on the show. I loved them all. Best of all, a couple of years ago I moved from Grosse Pointe, Michigan to the Italian version of Cicely, in San Fedele Intelvi. It's a great mountain town between Lake Come and Lake Lugano with an interesting cast of characters to keep me entertained. I now feel like I've joined the cast of NX.

Love how John wore the cut off shirt and bandana. Still adorable. My favortite show back then and remained all these years. Available for streaming finally! with original music from the show which some was taken out of DVD's. I wish they'd gotten Elaine Miles (Marilyn) and Darren Burrows (Ed) to join in.

We're in the same boat lol. I'm 46 and I just started the final season. It's a fantastic show! I don't know if you've gotten this far yet, but the conversation Chris (John Corbett) and Maggie (Janine Turner) have when Chris is installing that washer/dryer at her cabin. OMG, the writers nailed it back in 1994! That is exactly what we're dealing with today! Also, Janine Turner was/is a stone cold stunner. What a beauty!

I live a couple hrs. south of the filming location in Washington. My wife and I stopped in a couple years ago and had lunch at the Roslyn cafe. It re-kindled all the good memories of watching those first episodes. We are re-watching the the entire series. So much richer all these years later. We will return to "Sicily" Alaska again this summer and stop in at the Brick. We will wander the streets and say hello to the characters that we came to love. I think the over powering feeling I get from the show is acceptance of each person for who they are and a group of people striving, in their own imperfect way, for the common good. I grew up in towns or 350 population and 1400 population in rural Eastern Oregon. This show perfectly captured the spirit of a small town community. Thank you to the cast members for taking time to do this interview. Just a wonderful way to spend an hour.

I agree. This show had such great characters and allowed for growth of background characters into central characters as well. It eventually seemed that at any time, a character that had been on the periphery might become an episode where they had the lead. Twin Peaks, the obvious sister show, may have more hip cultural cache, but Northern Exposure earned a great deal of value on its own.
@RoxanaToledo-pk8te3 ай бұрын
I'm 61 yrs old, and for me Northern Exposure is the best TV show EVER. Quirky, original, wonderful characters, beautiful scenery, really funny but with a lot of heart. Extremely well written. Never boring. And, even though the characters were very complex, it wasn't as convoluted as today's shows, so it was easy to follow the stories.

My mother adored this show. Vaguely recalled watching it with her as a kid, something we always wanted to stream as the age of streaming came on, it was always the biggest absence. Cancer took her, quickly, just before the show appeared on Amazon. Stunning how much this show shaped me even as a child watching in retrospect. Blown away by the show, saw a clip of this somewhere and spent some time looking for it in full-thank you so much.

The show shone with genuine humanity. A deep optimism in the human capacity for kindness and the importance of community. I keep thinking of that one scene when Ruth-Ann quotes Terentius, “nothing human is alien to me.“ The show was everything that is noble in art.

Northern Exposure will always be one of the best TV shows of all-time. I am thrilled that N.E. was released on blu-ray in Region 1 for the first time recently, all six seasons in one box set. Watching Northern Exposure today takes me back to the early 90s even more than listening to Seattle Grunge Rock. That show defined an era and was a cultural moment in time. I cherish it! Truly one of the great TV shows to stand out from the multitude. Amazing to see this dialogue with thw actors. For me, I remember watching sporadic episodes, we were not a TV Guide household, and liking them, and they made an impression, I liked the stories, and the characters, and the setting, etc. All the things we loved about the show. I've been collecting DVDs and a few years ago I found the entire 6 seasons in the used bins for $1 each. Based on my memory of a few episodes from 30 years ago, I figured I'd spend the $6. Wow. I sat down with Season 1 and couldnt put em down until the end of the last episode (might have taken a month). Great great show. I should just pin this in my forehead as I go about in response to the inanity of the world we find ourselves today. Talk to the hand? Ok. Talk to the moose. Better.

The weirdness factor was a function of the great writing. Every episode had at least two-subplots and I was totally zeroed in. It was in the 6th season (?) that the sputtering started. Iris De Ment made the final episode. Great series overall; the all-star cast deserved another year, at least.

I remember watching this show after I worked an 18-hour day and I needed to relax. I was never a big TV guy but I liked the show. The funniest thing I had ever seen was when O'Connell's boyfriend (I think his name was Rick) was taken out by a satellite. when they had the funeral the casket was built around the satellite because he was apparently merged with it. That was the funniest thing I had seen since the Monty Python movies. The look on all the different characters faces when the casket came into the Church was hilarious.😂😂 I miss the show... I wish they would do a reboot and bring the characters back for another series.

Oh my gosh, I'm soooo excited to find this. After 30+ years, I just found Northern Exposure on Amazon & now died & think I'm in heaven watching it once again. It is honestly JUST the best show still (with Little House in a close 2nd. Smiling). I truly forgot what a great positive feeling this show gives a person. It's literally food for the soul - all these years later. Please if they're still alive, give my respect to the writers for their amazing work. When you were filming initially, I had taken my then very young daughter up to Roslyn & watched you film & even have a picture of Cynthia & my daughter in front of Docs office. Thank you still. And while there got to thank John for his awesome portrayal of Chris, whose philosophy in life was eerily close to mine along with the Native American theme which fits my soul exactly. Then Rob M, who I was having crazy lucid dreams about though in a past life as Native Americans (who can make this stuff up) who shows up on his motorcycle to the very redwood state park (Jed Smith) my then husband & I were living in 12 hours south of Roslyn & stays for 10 days totally freaking me out after years of having the same dream, that I knew him in a past life. Honest to God & whose bday is 09.21.62 & mine 09.12.62. The makings of a NE episode for sure. If I hadn't been so pregnant & fat & true reality shock, I would have sat down to chat for the hek of it. Now, all these years later, the kids grown, even a grandson & now with my beloved gorgeous Shona African husband (from Zimbabwe) & N.E is back in all it's glory. It'll probably be the last time to enjoy such great tv with us soon to be moving back to Africa to be surrounded with culture, lots of African drumming & dancing & joy - which is why I loved N.E to begin with. To all who were a part of this show....THANK YOU HEART & SOUL. WHAT A GREAT LEGACY...I also shut off our cable after this ended cause I knew nothing could ever compare. Blessings to all. Kerrie Kanda

As Ive reflected, it I ventire this show has everything I could possibly want in a show, and that is was complete fulfillment of its own potential. However, the one thing it doesn't have, is the hip factor that say, Twin Peaks, has/had. Obviously having an 'auteur' attached to Peaks makes it easier to keep in a certain segment of publics consciousness. Northern Exposure just doesnt have that. Its probably one of the best productions of corporate TV. Its goes well beyond what could have been expected, but it might be too "wholesome" for its own good. But being on streaming services now, it great to see it getting another wind. - one last thing though, that didn't help was that theast season, season 6, was a weak way, a soft, maybe even ineffective, way to end the journey. I'd love to entertain an 7th season......
