It's probably not comparable to Yugioh cuz A) Standard Magic is rotation and B) at least to my limited knowledge not the prevalent competitive format, BUT in current "modern" competitive Yugioh 400$ is on the cheap side, and the crazy part is unlike in Magic there aren't really that many "collectworthy" cards that are powerful enough to be played in the current day, with exception to banned cards of course.

This video is pretty good timing. Apollo opened two boxes of Magic cards and all he was talking about was possible value. My guy if you don't play the game don't open boxes for value. No card shop will give you anywhere near what the card is worth. They're in it to make money not make you money. You assume cards have value but in reality they are just game pieces and their value is only high if the supply is low and demand is high.
@bigsad76754 ай бұрын
Only people who don't give a shit sell their cards to a shop where you will at best get 50-70% of the value, But you can make your money back or more if you take the time to sell the cards as singles online but lets be honest Apollo ain't going to go through the trouble of doing that lol.

I see playing the game and playing the market of the game very differently. I currently put no money into magic the gathering but i enjoy playing it occasionally. I find this to parallel with the way i can enjoy playing music with minimum expenditure (aside from maintenance, replacing strings) on the same instruments bought for, given to, or handed down to me by friends and family. When people hear me play an electric guitar they start talking to me about different brands of guitar or amp or types of pedals and I'm clueless. My mind isn't where the money is though that's for sure 😂
@seantheplayer1014 ай бұрын
This is true of most things in my experience. The people who partake in any hobby out of love/passion don't care about what they actually have in terms of $ value whether it's cards, instruments, or any other type of gear. @@paradiseislands ugh the game is boring and WAYYYYYYYYY too expensive. Sure I HATE scalpers like people who buy up copies of older niche cards and relist for 2x the price more, obviously, but the players are always so fucking toxic in my area. The game costs money for tournaments, literally built in capitalism so you have to spend like $100 a month if u wanna go 4x to ur local card shop and buy optimal decks and go to leagues. I prefer trading, much larger skill window imo, can make money (personally I dont care but my parents DID take the 1.7k i made once sadly so I guess its for my "future") but most of all its free, always fun and rewarding. Trading is definitely my fav. Its ashame the stupid players in my community always get mad when i ask them to trade. Maybe id play the game if tournaments were free and the players werent toxic (some literally made fun of me on the lgs discord for "asking people to trade too much"). I prefer yugioh though, but speedrunning is free and a lot more fun than any cardgame to me. Maybe someday ill play ygo if i can play older formats online and there is a big scene but tldr im not spending $30 a month plus $20 every 2 months to play a mediocre game when I can just play smb2 any%

I have a holo #105/107 latias star from ex deoxys that's in pretty good shape, lightly played is my guess. But what they don't tell you is that it's actually annoying as hell to sell a card through mail especially if it's ungraded and also you risk getting scammed and also good luck getting what it's supposedly worth. Also, if you're listing it on a site, you need to be already trusted and then also wait months or years to have anyone actually care enough to spend the insane amount for it. You can list it for the $800 or whatever it is but if nobody with that kind of money is trying to buy one then it doesn't matter lol

The pokemon TCG (and other card games based on existing IPs like Lorcana, Digimon, One PIece, etc.) strike a balance where collectors can drop 300 dollars on the most recent version of a prismatic Charizard, but if you actually want to PLAY the game, the best deck is like maybe 50 dollars. Magic and Yugioh don't have the luxury of being tied to IPs like that, so the sole value of cards comes from how powerful they are (or their printing if they're super old/serialized copies).
