@@ImEverythingYouCrave Not only is NL allergic to Tainted Cain resin, he's definitely not gonna give up the chance to have "just vibe and do normal runs" as his MO for a while. Especially coming off of the hell he's gone through with the last few post-it note marks. The exception to this is the aforementioned C-section which practically requires a broken run (which T!Cain could easily do) to strongarm the game into giving you its final incomplete/bugged item.

47:30 My rule of thumb on when I try the alt path is when I get bad items on the first two floors. The alt path is harder, but between the knife pieces, the mirror world, and the doubled item rooms, it offers a lot of chances to get stronger. You can even get both knife pieces and then dip out, and just keep the knife as a high damage familiar for the rest of the run.

I was a bit surprised that he stuck to doing the alt path route when the Chest/Dark Room has higher yield for items he hasn't picked up yet. That being said, it was a good refresher for him to do the alt path again after a few weeks off (as he mentioned himself in the vid)

new speedrun category: playing Binding of Isaac but you've gotta be as kind as possible to Isaac hitless and never using self-harming mechanics to protect our lil boy only pick up items that don't cause pain/mutilation to Isaac pills get weird; obviously we don't wanna have him take harmful drugs, but "tears down" pills should be taken because they're antidepressants and Isaac is depressed for sure angel deals only to keep his soul pure going for the Home path because it's the closest thing this game has to a "happy ending"

I feel like Cobalt meant it as it's not worth it in the speedrun context as you said, but only in the speedrun context imo. The boss pool items aren't really impressive are they? I feel like item roll rerolls in the item room would be higher yield in general (just take an extra minute or so per floor)

Definitely, the treeasure room pool is high variance so for normal runs rolling item rooms and deals is probably the best both for chance at getting a great run and also for fun factor. In a speedrun you really only have 1 roll per floor optimally so you cant really roll both your deals and boss and item room

Boss pool, honestly I would rate as being about equivalent to item rooms, but as is mentioned, much lower variance, meaning that it's /generalllly/ less necessary to go for a reroll there. Unless you get a range up, you basically are either getting useful consumables in the early game, health, damage, speed, or tears. (also lil' steven and cube of meat, which IMO generally go into the not great, not terrible tier). in short, about 3/4 of the pool are just solid, meaning a reroll is relatively rarely worth doing. In a speed run context, however a few of the more utility items have less value, and going for damage/tears is prob more important... plus that extra consistency edge is really nice, especially when you roll the dice less times, so to speak, in that you get less items overall... What I'd really like to see would be the mean and SD of the item qualities in the different pools...

Well, turns out the lovely u/chpark0225 on reddit has collated a pictographic list of the items in each rating tier in every pool in a series of reddit posts. With a little bit of brute force and a calculator, we get that the mean value of the boss pool is 1.81, with a standard deviation of 0.705, and the mean of the item room is 1.711, with a standard dev of 1.165. Pretty much just confirming out intuition on the SDs, but the means are interesting. It might be noted that I did /not/ include special boss drops, and that item quality appears to be based on pre-rebalancing, which importantly makes alot of newly buffed items like holy water really underrated (it's ranked as a 0 for example).

Day 1 of begging NL to use the external item descriptions mod (it would take 3-4 clicks, please knock it out now that you're just playing aimlessly) It also explains what level your sacrifice rooms are, and tells you all the things you can craft as Tainted Cain based off whats in the room so you don't need to easy win every time if you random him. Hush is a way better designed and balanced boss, and actually has some benefits due to the bonus item rooms/shop/chest, as well as being pretty easy to squeeze into a run however, boss armor still isn't very fun, so NL will probably skip Hush unless he's steamrolling the game anyway and wants to flex

@@thunderbird0134 It's just not though, the best you can be is like 10% better than someone who didn't pay. 80% of the pokemon in the game right now can be played by a free account (next week it'll be 100% just due to how in game currency works) and the items are really niche bonuses that barely make you stronger. The game is currently incredibly imbalanced on a macro level, the items do not matter at all. The game is not pay to win, you can just pay to have the edge (and even then, a free account could have the same edge if they grinded for it but who cares about having a 5% move speed boost instead of a 2% one). You are misinformed.
