When I first became a Christian I got a Scofield Reference Bible. It puts a gap of millions of years between the 1st and 2nd verse of Genesis chapter one. It took me about a decade and a half to overcome this false teaching and recognize that there is no gap. God really did create everything in 6 days less than 10,000 years ago. So be aware of the false teaching in Scofield that has led millions to reject Christianity because "science" said that Genesis chapter 1 was wrong. Scofield had undermined reading God’s Word as it is written in Genesis.

Years ago I heard that the famous missionary Jim Eliot never put a mark in his Bible. He wanted the word to be fresh every time he came to meet God in His Holy Word. That advice has kept me in good stead for decades now. I read through the Word over and over each year. Each year it becomes clearer and clearer. I start to anticipate the next story coming along, I see patterns and details never noticed before, etc. I have many times had to check my reading schedule because I was sure that I had read the passage only the week before when in fact it had been a year since I was there, it seemed so fresh to me! I am concerned Pastor, with your consistent admonition to “be careful” when using study Bibles. There is a problem when the ones who need to be the most careful, new believers, are the ones the least equipped to even understand what “careful” in this situation would even entail. How much better to guide the congregation to a regular Bible reading schedule and making elders and teachers available to guide those who need help. Please consider this. We have lost so much true discipleship in this day and age. Thank you for your teaching. May the Lord bless you and your family.

Amen to this. I’ve been on the merry go round of all those false doctrines. Praise Jesus I’m back to the simplicity that’s in Christ and the gospel. I didn’t have to become a theologian to be saved. I am saved by grace through faith…., faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. My faith may be visible in what I do or don’t do but regardless whether it’s visible to others or not I have faith. I am saved as sure as Jesus came lived died and rose again!!

What's a gal to do when no one cares? Finally in 2020, I stopped going to false many churches, only to find out I was still stuck in stealthier false churches. Now that I'm free in Christ, I can't get anyone's attention!? They're trusting their small group, their study guides, their mystic prayer/worship events. When you've been in bondage, and then you're free, you want all who are in bondage to become free- no one wants to hear this from me. My world is getting smaller and smaller. Ty for this series.

I feel exactly as you do. At the moment we don’t go anywhere as I can’t stand all the nonsense that is church or the legalism and hypocrisy of the denomination I was brought up in. I read my Bible and listen to any sound ministry I can find. I wish I could have an hour in a meeting ( as we called them ) that we would have attended in the 1980s. Most of those faithful believers are now with the Lord and so those good teaching days seem to be over.

I have been a believer for over 40 years but have really gotten serious about seeking Jesus thru the Bible. I am so disappointed in many "believers" who do not want to talk Jesus, Bible, eternity, etc. They almost get angry with me for my enthusiasm for my faith. My world is getting smaller too, yet I have a freedom in Christ that I have never had before. God bless. Soon and very soon we are going to see the King.

@nobux71710 ай бұрын
Mark, I found out myself that the NIV is considered one of the most corrupt translations out there. I never left the King James bible myself because the devil is in the details of newer translations regardless of how easy they have been made to read. Even the New King James should be avoided because of the nature of how modified biblical deception works. The attempt to change the wording in the King James is no accident, even though there may be good intentions in it. One minister I saw said he wouldn't use any modern Bible translations printed after 1899.

I completely understand what you are saying. I've used only the Scofield Reference Bible which is kjv. I knew that I was not obligated to believe any of his commentary or notes. For example in Matt.7:14 the text reads, "which leadeth unto life". Scofield's notes says it is " eternal" life. If I believe that, it has nothing to do with Scofield saying so.

A very good sermon about the truth that's going on with Christian church ministry today. So much Calvinism, Armenianism, lordship salvation, and legalism/judaizers. Once one learns the basic simplicity of salvation, spotting these false doctrines becomes easy to catch at any church. The pastors seem to have no idea or problem with teaching it. And they can be very very ok with it and really don't want to hear any criticism. I'm hesitant to waste my breath pointing it out to them anymore, because their church congregation would collapse and run if they changed their message.

Ahh you said the magic word, "that commentary will teach them," that's the danger, "the indoctrination," and it is indoctrination! The Holy spirit is the Teacher! Commentaries and the notes in study Bibles are nothing more than another man's opinion, understand what you are reading, "in context," in your Bible, and then read the note's and see if they confirm with the Lord is giving you, be very careful of another man's opinion, as the wisdom of man and the wisdom of this world is very dangerous! Seek the wisdom and discernment of God! Maranatha...

It is true that some commentaries are in error. There are a few commentaries that are dedicated to contextual content, utilizing comprehensive interpretive tools to rightly divide the word. Commentaries are simply an exhortation of a particular biblical scholar. All bible colleges and seminaries utilize them for curriculum having a library full of them.

I strongly recommend the Scofield Reference and Ryrie Study Bibles as long as they're in a Majority Text and not an Alexandrian Critical Text version. As a young believer, they'll set you up well to be a workman approved of God who can rightly divide the Word of Truth. Of course as Pastor Tom succinctly points out in this message, caution has to be exercised with the notes. Even Charles Ryrie good man as he was made some dubious comments inconsistent with what he really believed (rightly) about salvation and John McArthur picked out to support his Lordship view.
@bradholbrooks3 жыл бұрын
I made the mistake of reading these men’s thoughts on scripture for many years, but came to the realization that the only true teacher of the Bible (KJB) is, as the Bible makes clear, God’s Holy Spirit. You will never learn anything about God’s Word outside of His Word, prayer, and His Holy Spirit. Scofield was a modernist who’s first notes will introduce new believers to the false “Gap Theory.” He also thinks himself a better translator of scripture than the KJB translators, and promotes the Wescott and Hort Revised Version. It seems wise to put away our idols, like Scofield, Ryrie, MacAuthor, and the most popular Billy Graham, and recommend nothing but God’s Word, respectfully teaching the truth about it’s preservation in the KJB, and the only way to understand it correctly: through the teaching and guidance of God’s Holy Spirit as we pray and study His preserved Word: this cultivates a relationship with God, rather than consuming hypocritical delusions of men and their vain, Antichrist religion(s).

First, when a believer starts relying on the study notes than the Bible itself, it becomes an idol. Second, many rely on devotionals but many are written specifically and according to the author. One cannot live on the same thing by the day year after year. For my POV, it keeps one "on track" yet I believe it quenches the Holy Spirit as the Teacher to the Word of God. The intent of the authors may be good but misguided.

You introduce 2 Timothy 2:15 where it says a "workman" that needeth not be ashamed. I noticed how you gloss over this but to me it is important. Why would there be any shame if our Salvation is assured? I believe it is secure but we are expected to show growth. (2 Peter 3:17-18) "take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ". In this letter, Peter is telling us in no uncertain terms about the importance of making a committed effort to grow in our knowledge and service to God. Does that require us to diligently follow him and his word, after salvation?

Are we not New Creatures when we trust Christ? 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Christ Himself said "Ye must be born again." Is there anyone whose life is not changed when they trust Christ as their Savior? Shouldn't that result in some change of behavior? I realize we all grow at different paces, but to see someone "make a profession of faith and yet never desire God or spiritual things, that certainly brings me pause. I have family members who grew up in church, made professions of faith, were baptized and have no inkling toward God, the Bible, church, etc. They live in very sinful ways, and yes, I'm very concerned about the genuineness of their decision/salvation! I do not think for a moment they can live comfortably in their sin and still be saved. The Holy Spirit grieves when we sin. I realize we can't see the heart, but something should change at some point. Shared via Bible KJV

We are given the new man/nature at the point of trusting Jesus Christ but we still have our old man/nature. We still have our free will and can choose to yield to either the old man or the new man. There is no guarantee that we will yield to the new man. Ephesians 4: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. There are some serious errors in the Schofield study Bible, and I wouldn't trust Strong's concordance for ANYTHING! But honestly, even the study Bible (Henry Morris) and commentary (Matthew Henry) I recommend the most still has errors in it. Ultimately, your best bet is to just stay away from them all and focus on the scriptures themselves.

I am against study Bibles. By adding notes to the pages of Scripture they violate Revelation 22:18. My experience is that when resistance to positions that contradict study Bible notes is based on the simple fact that "my Scofield Bible says so." I often run into (fellow) dispensationalists that are convinced that the book of Daniel mentions Rome, even though Rome is never mentioned in the Biblical text. Sunday School teachers teach that the two legs of the image in Daniel 2 refer Rome - no opinion qualifiers, no maybe's, no perhaps about it. If Rome were actually mentioned in the Bible text they would not be any more convinced. The account the pastor related about his father swallowing the notes in the study Bible is what Rev 22:18 was written to prevent. I've seen unbelievers pick up on "Scripture alone" fundamentalists contradict their stand by reliance on Bible study notes.
@timothyhodges7052 жыл бұрын
The ESV Study Bible has a commentary on each page, that is in the same model as the John MacArthur Study Bible. Be very careful with that one. The real problem with these commentaries is that they can start programing the readers with presuppostional thinking based on what is written in the commentary.

Try oh please try and ever actually find one verse that clearly says there is a secret rapture befor what Jesus return. He said clearly in matt 24 about when He was coming which is 'after the tribulation' He sends His angels to get His people one time. Revelation 5 John sees the redeemed at the throne saying Jesus is worthy to open the seals. They are wearing white robes and crowns, so evidently the church is there and has already received their rewards. I've brought this up on many posts where people argue against the pre rapture view, and never once has anyone ever responded about what that means. Well, one time someone said it was only those who already died but that would mean Jesus married a bride with parts missing.😂
@graftme3168 Жыл бұрын
Another interesting consideration is that the Bible uses marriage as an example of our relationship to Christ. In the OT, a groom picked up his bride unannounced and took her to his father's house where she is being prepared for the wedding. After the wedding, the groom takes his bride with him to the wedding supper. Tribulation believers will be the guests at the wedding. Jesus called John the Baptist the "friend of the bridegroom." He was the last of the OT prophets. The main problem with interpretation regarding the end, in my view, is that people assume that everyone who is saved is the bride. Can the bride be a guest at her own wedding? Who will Christ and His bride rule and reign over? Revelation reveals that tribulation martyrs will be given a position to serve God at His throne. Evidently they cannot be the bride who is promised to rule and reign with Christ. Jesus said that the church, the bride, will judge Israel. You have to see that in order for God to set up His government, there has to be different positions and ranks. You can't clump everyone together as the bride. If you don't, you will see that it all comes together and makes a whole lot of sense
@laverawoods917411 ай бұрын
His "coming" is after the tribulation; no one disputes that, but the "going" of the believers is prior.
