I feel like the song Obsidian brought that breakdown I was really looking for in this album. soo mighty Edit: Clarity also slaps
@matthewknight71802 жыл бұрын
I remember when I first listened to the title track I also thought it sounded somewhat incomplete. But man, the more I listen to it the more stuff I find to appreciate. I think the reason it sounded incomplete at times was how open the track gets. But the ambience really carries the song until the breakdown. Over time it's grown into my favorite northlane song.

Dude, I'm so glad you did a Northlane Ranking. Northlane is one of the few Metalcore bands that keep Metalcore still alive for me. I found Northlane back when Mesmer was in stores. I bought it from Best Buy and it just was amazing.. but it was Alien that made me a fan! Songs like Jinn and Paradigm really stood out for me, this new album, Obsidian might have to take some time for me to get use to.. I love Carbonized, Echo Chamber, Plenty was meh.. ok.. and Cypher and a few others were amazing... There's some good Technical Death Metal releases again this year, Soreption, Sadist, Zenith Passage Exocrine etc..

Dang, Cypher was actually one of the highlights for me. 😅 Plenty is probably on top for me though. I like this as a review format! 👍

As someone who loves d&b and metalcore i adored Alien so much. Took me 2 or 3 full listens to fully appreciate Obsidian, but boy is it ever unique and amazing! The dark techno, d&b and cyberpunk vibes are an amazing combination with the metalcore/NU metal foundation. Well done Northlane, blew my mind with this album. P.S. the techno drop on Abomination is my fav part of the album! 8/10

This album won't top Alien for me, but it's not that far behind. It's a really fun album to listen to. I really like most of the tracks, but "Is this a test?" is definitely my least favourite one.

I do think the album works much better than some of the songs do individually. I wasn't too into Clockwork, at first, but with the rest of the album I think it fits much better as a piece of a whole.

Pretty much agree on most of your picks. But I feel like Carbonized and (especially) Cypher got snubbed. Would highly recommend a re-listen for those 2. Past that. Spot on. Nice video man👌🏻

I looked at my buddy and said "who do they think they are!? SAVAGE GARDEN!!!? He didn't get it... Happy you heard it too... I didn't really dig the album. A few songs but it's no Alien... Hell, I don't think it's even Mesmer level... Disappointed but expected to be by the singles...

I was a big fan of this band during the Node, Discoveries, and Singularity days. But I can't for the life of me get into anything from Alien or this album. I wish I did. But it's just not for me. It's not bad if you're into this sorta thing. So, that's a positive I guess.

I 100% agree. Alien has some hitters but this album felt more electronic then metal. I was actually kinda let down because I fell in love in the NODE days
@a83332 жыл бұрын
Idk i find those three albums to be kinda standard tech/djent metal stuff , i know they were earlier to it and kinda invented a lot of that sound but it just doesn't sound impressive to me specially after already going through my "djent kid " phase , but alien and this album at least bring something fresh to table with the electronics and alien also really played a role in the revival of nu metal that happened recently which i love but i totally get why you might not

Looking forward to listening to this new album. Clockwork is my favorite single with super catchy beat. Actually was my favorite track of 2021. Echo Chamber was very repetitive but it grew on me just because it’s got a great beat as well. Carbonized is not really my style but I respect it. The chorus seems out of place. Got busy with Veil Of Maya and Architects reactions last night. What you think of those songs btw?

Will listen to this album tonight before sleeping because I am hearing a lot of good things about it. I've only listened to Clockwork and it's alright. I like EDM and synths a bit but it just sounds too happy at places lmao. Idk why. Would love to hear your thoughts on the new Architects track (I honestly just wanna watch you shit on it because that's probably what's gonna happen but idk, you might like it. This album sounds like to me (hear me out) Linkin Park A Thousand Suns if they didn't abandon their Hybrid Theory sound and went heavier and more industrial, with no stupid interludes all killer no filler (I wonder if anyone agrees lol)

I feel like Northlane might deserve a new audience with this record, yakno? This music is certainly heavy and they don’t pull their punches. But at the same time, it’s almost impossible to call this metalcore - bar the fancy riffs in Plenty, this has nothing in common with their contemporaries in Polaris or Make Them Suffer. It’s part of why I like northlane so much, they’re not ones to fall to genericism (unlike the aforementioned bands), but metalcore fans are unlikely to really see the appeal. Overall I love the album, solid 9/10 - but since the genre has become all too breakdown-centric, I think these guys need new fans.

I only discovered these guys over the last year. Their other stuff is pretty bland. But I listened to this on the way home this morning. And was really loving it. Looking forward to hearing it on some good speakers. My one complaint is the guitars do feel a little generic, almost like they looped the same riffs through out the album. Which normally would be blasphemy. But they somehow they make this work with their whole industrial synth side.
