Neat little experiment. I enjoyed purchasing waxed amaryllis, and thought the little wire stand was well thought out. They’ve always bloomed so well. The bulbs, from Brazil, were first encased in a rubber balloon, and then waxed, and I thought that was a fine idea.

Danielle what is the reason for cutting off the basal plate on the bulb?

Hi friend! It helps them lay flat. If they are laying flat without having the lower portion of the basal plate removed then I probably would skip that step.

I was given a waxed amaryllis bulb last year and it just kept blooming. I failed to plant it, because I couldn’t find instructions that were clear. I still have the bulb, any idea how, where to plant?

People give me the waxed bulbs after they are done blooming. To plant just tear off all the wax. Sit in a little water and plant 3/4 deep in dirt. I plant mine in the shade during the summer and dig up when it gets cold. Zone 4. They rebloom every year about Valentines Day.

Doesn’t waxing an amaryllis bulb make it a “one and done” where if you don’t wax it, you can enjoy it for many years to come?

I have four amaryils. 3 have buds. The waxed one only leafs. I will not buy waxed again
