Lemon Juice and (store/shelf/.3%) Hydrogen peroxide or fingernail polish can be used if you don't have Acetone or remover, or if it's late and stores are closed. Still needs a bit of heat to activate though... Or if you live in Alaska and don't have reliable access to places like Amazon or other online stores. The lemon juice and h2o2 mix has to be thoroughly cleaned up though because it will cause corrosion and will short the board. So clean with soapy water and a soft tooth brush, then rinse thoroughly, then rinse thoroughly with IPA.

Electronic boards are coated to prevent corrosion. Three types of coatings are; Acrylic resin Silicone resin Urethane resin (Polyurethane) To dissolve these resins there are solvents to do this with BUT you have to be careful not to also dissolve the PCB board as well. Acrylic resin can be dissolved with Acetone (very strong) and Xylene Use a Q-tip with sparing amount of solvent on it and mask area around the electronic component with painter's masking tape. Silicone resin use Dicone NC-9 on Q-tip using same method. Urethane resin use Isopropyl 99% Since there is no way to know which resin was used, start with the Isopropyl to see if that works. If not then knowing that Acrylic would be the most obvious choice as a coating, I'd then use Xylene. But make sure you mask off the area. If no effect then use the Dicone. It is safe on PCB's

The most importand question about it is not how to remove it or "he does not like it". The question is why it is not put back on. it can be just a coat of clearcoat. Car needs this for moisture and humidity changes. I understand the hate , but it it there for a reaseon and decent repair would end with that coat or similar back on there. Also thanks for good explanation.

I have a story about one of these. I am also an automotive locksmith. We run a lot of calls. This vehicle requires a lot of work to make the key. If we have to take things apart, remove panels, instrument clusters, open modules we send them down the road. Range Rover is one of these. We had a customer call just for a lockout. We opened it up and her keys weren't inside so she towed it to the dealer. They told her we ruined her KVM by unlocking the car without a key. They wanted $2500 for a KVM and close to $1000 for the key. The lady called me not blaming my company but she didn't know what to do. I told her they were full of BS. I had the car towed out and another locksmith who does all the high end stuff programmed a new fob for $650. This lady was so thankful for me helping her out. I hate these dealers. Always telling customers false information.

Those main dealers love to rip the arse out of anyone. I had a customer that had a totaly flat battery, and the mechanical door lock never worked anyway, so he only used the electronic key fob, the call out service jacked his range rover up & temporarily put a power pack on the starter motor/ solenoid which gave him enough power to quickly undo the door.

Conformal coating is great for protecting PCBs from moisture, dust and corrosion. Surprised you don't have any of the conformal coating remover! Sometimes acetone or xylene will remove it too. But the actual special remover can be one more thing for you to plug as you repair. You can talk about the best soldering iron tip, best vise, the lights, the best solder wick, best flux, best tweezers, better than factory and best conformal coating remover. I'll give it three weeks before you discover it and add it to your store. 😉

Good job with the conformal removal. A few KZbin channels have various methods of conformal rework, one in particular is "Rework and Repair 'Conformal Coating Removal' " on the Paceworldwide channel. If solvents are suggested, it may be difficult to source if someone is currently in California. There's also a section in the IPC 7711/7721 titled "Coating Removal, Identification of Conformal Coating" which has suggested methods as well. Just my 2 cents.

True. Conformal coating is a nightmare to all repair shops. There's actually a solvent that can remove conformal coating, but I forgot what. It's not even commonly used in the industry where they use conformal coating treatment for their customers. The purpose is not only to protect the board from moisture/liquid attack, but also most likely encouraged that the board is non-repairable.

I have a few lads that comes in all the time for small auto electronic repair and they're the customers I really like , they never ask for it to be done asap as mostly the part is either stupidly expensive or has a lead time of a few weeks to get a new one. They never complain about the prices and I'm very reasonable because It's little jobs like this is what I love , they hand you the board or part ready to go or I tell them look take it to bits and just give me the board or what needs to be done and I'll do it while you wait. I tried to charge a guy 10 euro once for soldering a new smd led onto a dashboard as he had it ready and 10 leds on a strip, he threw a fifty at me and left me with rest of the leds for next time.
