A very nice presentation and "walk-trough"of the F-5A cockpit. Highly accurate and your numbers are dead on. But as a retired pilot I have some comments. The yaw and pitch dampers are installed to improve the aircraft characteristics as a weapon platform and less consideration is paid to the wellbeing of the pilot, but can be regarded as a bonus On the left throttle there's a black cylinder as part of the handle . It can be rotated and sets the range for the guns in GA ( Air-to-air) mode (1000-1500 and 2000 feet). UHF antenna switch is normally just left in Auto (middle position). The trigger on the stick fires the guns only. AIM-9, rockets and bombs are fired with the red button. The "Down lock override" push button unlocks the handle only. Can be used to raise the gear if Weight on wheel switch(es) malfunctions. There is no aural warning for the flaps so pushing the "Alert silence" switch silences the gear warning only. The flap indicator has 4 displays. UP, LE, barber pole and DOWN. The flap selector has 3 positions, UP, LE and DOWN. Barber pole is shown when the flaps are not in the position set on the selector, as when in transit. Barber pole is the normal indication on the ground with the flaps selected UP, because the LE (Leading Edge) flaps are not retracted on the ground even with the flaps selected UP. The weight-on-wheel switch prevents the LE to retract fully when on the ground. The external fuel tanks are emptied from the center and outwards. Fuel in the tip-tanks (mass) is desired to dampen oscillations in the wing and is therefore emptied last. This is also the reason for the placement of the tank and launcher on the wingtips- they are extended forward of the leading edge. I also noted in your other video you talked about the LE flaps as "maneuvering flaps". This is not correct regarding the F-5A/B. The LE and FULL flaps have a maximum speed limitation of 300 KIAS and a G envelope of 0 to +2.5G.

The hilarious "BANG" of the tanks dropping in DCS though LOL
@FlywithMagnar
@FlywithMagnar 2 жыл бұрын
That is not a DCS effect. In DCS, the tanks disappear. The effect was created with Photoshop and a sound effect found on YT.

Thank you for sharing. Very informative just like all your content. It’s amazing to think pilots of this era had to operate the aircraft and systems, navigate, possibly fight, attack targets then find their base and land maybe at night in all weather before gps was invented. Amazing

GPS makes navigation easier, but the pilots still have to do the rest.

In the video at 06:49 you show an awesome eye of the tiger paint scheme for the F 5 in DCS. How can I install this one? I can't find it on the website.

Hi, Magnar! Thank you for a most interresting series on one of my personal favorite aircraft. Regarding the cabinprssure indicator. How is that scaled? According to cabinpressure altitude, or just plain pressure. And is that scaling common between mil. and civilian types, such as the venerable ATR-42?
@FlywithMagnar
@FlywithMagnar 2 жыл бұрын
The cabin pressure indicator shows the pressure altitude in the cabin/cockpit. In the F-5, it is scaled in thousands of feet, and the maximum value is 50,000 feet. In EFIS equipped ATR aircraft, the maximum value is 15,000 feet. Everything above is danger zone. In the glass cocpit, the indication is digital, and no max value is published. I assume it always shows the actual cabin altitude.
