From Wikipedia:
The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was an American all-weather interceptor built during the 1950s, the first jet-powered aircraft designed for that role from the outset to enter service. Though its straight wings limited its performance, it was among the first United States Air Force (USAF) jet fighters equipped with guided missiles and notably the first combat aircraft armed with air-to-air nuclear weapons (the unguided Genie rocket). en.wikipedia.o...

That was one of the planes I wanted to grow up and fly when I was a kid and saw a picture of it in a volume of Jane's Book Of Fighter Aircraft. This plane, The F9F Panther, The Fury and The F-4 Phantom Preferably one with guns mounted) are a few of my all time favorite fighter jets.

Amazing catch, this must be one of the only F-89s left! I hope you got a chance to walk around the Canberra in the background.

Close friend flew the F89 out of Alaska. Then moved to B-52Hs. Flew the Eastern Chrome Dome route (Homestead AFB, FL to Italy). Had a great career... and loved the Scorpion's rocket pods. Classic.

A shame that it's sitting out & not airworthy. The F-89 is the most beautiful straight winged interceptor /fighter that was ever made.

My dad worked at the Hawthorne plant on these birds. We lived a 1/4 mile from the runway and when I heard one these planes fire up to go to Palmdale, I would run as fast as I could to see it take off. Most pilots would make one run over the runway, go full afterburner, pull her straight up and be gone

Wow, I didn't realize they built them in Hawthorne. Was the runway longer back then?

@@VMCAviationVideos I could not find the length of the runway, but did find this video that will give you an overview of the aircraft that flew out of the Northrop plant. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGeUYp5onqijrrs I am sure you will find it very interesting and there is a part 2 also. I was also fortunate as a small boy to see the flying wing fly there also.

For a while they were bringing Navy A3 Skywarriors to be retrofitted, but that stopped when one of them had a chute failure and crashed through the jet blast deflector at the end of the runway. Fortunately the crew walked away from that.

That's just the interior of the wheel well. The landing gear bay had two doors, inner and outer. The inner doors remained closed on the ground.

Butt-ugly plane, but she sure could get up and go when she needed to - up to 645 mph at altitude (ceiling of around 50,000 feet). Almost in the same speed class as the F-86 Sabre jet fighter. Ground crews used to call her "Choo-choo", or "The Choo-choo Train", because of her profile when on the ground - her large main gear in the back, and the small nose gear up front kinda made her look like an old steam locomotive from the late 19th century.
