The Phoenix is a wonderful boat..... I am 6'4" and use mine with a sitting drop and that allows for a great combination of stability AND playfulness that suits my needs. Cheers!

Nice video. Curious to hear your comparison of the Firebird to the Wildfire. I own a Firebird but have heard so much about the Wildfire. Thanks Ethan.

There is a vid of a comparison of the Flashfire to the Firebird which is the truer comparison that I did on my channel awhile back. It would have to be Wildfire to Phoenix to be a more accurate comparison. But, the Flashfire vs Firebird vid tells the same story. I’ve now sold both my Wildfire and Flashfire which may give additional indication of how I ultimately feel. Indeed they are all great boats but for actual river/waves/touring/use vs freestyle, and especially out West, I far prefer Northstar’s versions.

Great video! Nice plug for John C, I’ll have to ask him about the footbrace. Would love to come paddle with you there, I’ll bring my Phoenix and Wildfire.

I’d love to have a lightweight boat like these, if I had the money 😂

I just bought a Magic and I’m wondering whether it would be better to use a straight shaft or bent shaft paddle or does that depend more on me than the paddle? I also have a carbon fiber kayak paddle that I could get out of storage as well. What are the advantages of each of those three?

There is a vid where I talk about straight and bent on my channel. In the end, it is your pick (I carry both always). The magic was intended to be a bit more of a sitter boat and often times people sitting use, sit n switch style with a bent shaft. If you want to get into all the fun in water return strokes then you’ll want a straight shaft. Many people swear by a kayak paddle for really making miles or changing muscle groups on windy days. I rarely carry one myself. The magic is in a very convenient spot in my garage and I use it for fitness often and when doing so I prefer a bent shaft and higher cadence sit and switch style. My personal paddle bag has a Bending Branches, Sunburst, and black pearl, bent (52/50 depending on bait) and straight (58). Then a Branches expedition straight for rough stuff (56). I’m 6’.

@@HappyPaddlin All great info, thank you! After my kayaking days were over, I held on to my Bending Branches Pro Angler carbon fiber super expensive paddle for just that reason. However I love the idea of carrying along just my two Sanborn Gunflint paddles. One straight, one bent. I’m sure I will find the correct feel although I love the idea of the Canadian stroke so my heart is rooting for the straight shaft to win out!

What was the comment on dogs about?
@HappyPaddlin

The discussion is around dog’s ripping up wildlife nesting sites and fragile riparian zones. Multiply by thousands of dogs in Bend condensed over limited areas and you have an issue that gets discussed.
