Can this type of machine start a hole in flat ground or does it only work on a slope?

I have run draglines also and yes you can start on flat ground. A dragline is primarily used to start at a level equivalent to where machine is sitting and work down. If you try to work at a higher level it looses it’s effectiveness quickly.
