This color Northwest Orient Airlines film encourages travelers to visit the Philippines and opens with an aerial view of Corregidor Island at the entrance to Manilla Bay and how life on the island has returned to normal after having been a battleground in World War II. The 1950s film shows fisherman heading out for the day’s catch while families live in their straw huts. On Luzon, residents carve elaborate likenesses for the tourist trade (mark 01:00) while others perform a native bamboo dance (mark 01:30) or gather coconuts to be used for soap, oil, or food. Getting to the islands is easy, the view is reminded at mark 03:00, thanks to modern airlines. Several scenes of Filipinos at work in fields or plantations follow as the narrator explains working and living in the Philippines, and at mark 07:50 we learn how lumber is a major export of the island. We also see the Philippines at play, enjoying horse racing (mark 08:55), as well as a parade by the military (mark 09:30) - a military full of courage and honor. There is also a glimpse of a baseball game (mark 10:05) - a sport introduced to the Philippines during WWII. And how does a traveler reach “this interesting land”? Via Northwest Orient Airlines (mark 10:47), as we watch a stewardess collect passengers’ jackets while tourists sit and relax. The picture also pauses starting at mark 12:45 and we see frames of bombed out buildings in “Old Manilla” that were destroyed during WWII - monuments “to the tragedy of war” - before returning to the “stately buildings” of a renewed city.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."

Baseball popularity was shortlived I guess. Basketball has been the most popular sport since the 70's

Indeed! You rarely hear anything about baseball here anymore (except perhaps in a few provinces at best)!

Beginning at around 10:42 are rare and terrific exterior and interior shots of a Northwest Airlines Lockheed Super "G" Constellation. NWA only operated four of these "Connies" starting in 1955. Thanks for sharing!

The last statement was my favorite. A testament to our once glorious nation, something truly to be proud of: The Republic of the Philippines. "You'll find many contrasts in these colorful islands of the tropic seas. Planting to music is part of their fascination, part of their very life. Such are the Philippines, America's vital ally in the Pacific; The Asiatic East is not interested in the words of democracy but in the deeds of democracy and performing those deeds is the Republic of the Philippines one of freedom's fighting strongholds in this world of ours."

So sad to see what the country has become through years of corruption. So much wealth and hope all plundered by corrupt officials. Still my favourite place n the planet, just sad to see what she was to what she is today.

my roommate,s dad was stationed there in the Philippines during the war and headed up into the hills when general MacArthur was ordered out in 42 but he did not talk about it very much and we figured out he fought a guerrilla war against the Japanese army and might have become one of the early coast watchers, and he would tell us that the Japanese would come into a small village and take all the food they had ,but would have enough to feed the guerrilla,s

1:16 Wow!! Baguio Cathedral So Clean Outside and No Structures Beside it. Not Like Now. 😮 The Sugar industry is Almost Dead. All Agricultural is Almost Dead.. All you Can see in the Fields are Foreign Factories. Subdivisions, Resorts, Golf Courses, The Food Supplies Especially Rice will be Gone Soon. And Talking About Lumbers it's All Ilegal Now. Mountains are Bald Floods And Landslides All over the Country.

Stagnation and Confusion. Mediocrity and Emigration. Corruption and Inequality. Poverty. Development but going back. Unsustainable, there's too much pollution. This is what happened to our once glorious nation.

Overpopulation is definitely a factor as well. Imagine, in a span of 60 years or so the Phil. went from 20 M to 110 M! It seems as if people started breading like crazy from the 60s / 70s onwards.

This shows that agriculture supported our country's heyday. When we forgot about agriculture, it went downhill from there. Capitalism took over .
