Remove the rear valve adjustment cover to get more clearance when removing manifold allen bolts.

Yes, thanks, I tried that, but it still caught on the stud. When I put the carbs back on, I'll cut the shaft of one allen key down so it misses the stud. (I want to keep one long allen key so I can tighten/loosen the allen screws as necessary - longer shaft)

It's much easier to remove the first carb if you remove the inlet rocker cover, and of course the second carb is quite a bit easier to get at than the first !.. It always surprises me that Norton didn't splay the carbs slightly on the Commando like Triumph did..

Maybe it's because the servicing is in 4 separate parts, giving as much detail and info as possible rather than just skimming over things. See videos parts 17, 18 and 19 for the full (detailed!) story - with action!
