Social resistance by the civilian population to the Nazi occupation of Norway offered great risk in a country where the occupation leader’s name- Quisling- became a synonym for Nazi collaboration. Still, resistance came from Norway’s teachers, who refused to abide by rules set by the Nazi government.

One of my most cherished memories of childhood is the hours I spent with my great uncle. As a teenagers, he had lived in my grandfather's home, along with my mother and her siblings. After earning a teaching degree in the US, he had returned to Norway, and had been teaching for several years when the Nazis invaded. He was not only part of the resistance of the teachers, but become active in organizing the local underground in his area, becoming the regional commander. I had been under orders not to ask him about his war experiences, my parents fearing that I would stir painful memories. However, he volunteered several stories. The most dramatic one was of a time when he and his men set off explosives at each end of a highway tunnel, timed it so that a German convoy was trapped inside. About half of his men escaped arrest by the Nazis during the occupation, considered a very good record. We have a photo of him marching at the head of a column of surviving underground fighters in the victory parade held in their city when the king visited after the war. My uncle's proudest memory was of the moment the king presented him with a medal commemorating his contribution to the resistance movement.

My fourth grade teacher was among those arrested, and he ended up in the Oranienburg consentration camp in Germany. He was rescued by "The White Buses", a rescue effort led by Swedish red cross all over the disintegrating Nazi Germany in the spring of 1945. He told us about his ordeals, in that lead to a lifelong interest in war history for me. The white buses operation is in itself history that deserves to be remembered.

The White Buses (Hvite Busser) are still remembered - every year, the final class at school go on a bus tour of concentration camps in Germany, led by "Tidsvitner" - who were there in 1940s (but are dying out now), as part of their education. My wife and I went along with our two sons. t's very powerful and moving. An excellent initiative

One of the white buses came to our school once. The bus was no longer functional… but the man originally driving the bus came to talk about the work, the journeys, and then show us his personal photos. Just… terrifying. And that man, almost 90 at the time, well… he wished he could have done more, saved more people. You could see that he was sad talking & then he quietly explained that he now tried to make his last effort to share these photograph with us - the next generation- who were basically younger that his great grandkids - so that we could help keep the memory alive for future generations. It was… It was real, true, awful and nauseating. Fascism & its consequences in the rawest possible form.

The white buses is an example of resistance and who resists. I have a few examples from Denmark: 1) Officially there was no petrol left in Denmark. But it suddenly materialized, when it was needed to get people out of the camps. For five years someone had known, where the petrol was - but shut t.f. up, only to suddenly remember, when this cause came up. 2) When the buses were found in Denmark, they had to leave on very short notice - a few hours. So the leader of the Danish Red Cross called a workshop - in the evening - and asked if they could possibly paint five buses in two hourrs. The answer was clear: Bring them here. They were ready. Now - is this resistance?

I am not speaking to all educators, but much of where we are today is because of our education system. During the occupation of Norway, Sweden harbored many Norwegian that had fled. We also trained a police force of Norwegians for the day Germany fell so they could take over before any Soviet troops could invade from the north. Another 1 of the Ten Commandments should be outlawed because it is related to contract law but certain people don't want it outlawed (adultery). Common knowledge in Norway, but much does not go abroad. The laws used against former Nazis, were backdated, so totally against international law. Another issue was the capitulation on 10. June 1940. The Germans interpreted it as a total surrender, while the Norwegian government in London, regarded it as only valid in Norway. After the war, the latter was accepted. Only during the last decades, some Norwegian historians have started to look at it differently. In retrospect, most Norwegian Nazis were in it for nationalism. As THG mentioned, Quisling hoped for a separate nation, under German supervision, but that would not be the case.... In one way, it's sad he was executed, as an autoviography would have been interesting.....

I read a biography about Vidkun Quisling a number of years ago. He was a former officer in the Norwegian army. And he took a leave to help starving Ukrainians during the Holodomor, back in the nineteentwenties. He was promised this would not affect his career in the Norwegian army, but it did. And that even when he was the officer student with the highest score anytime, from the Norwegian officers academy. Like their West Point. I mean, all time high! He had a very high IQ, I think in the top 1 percent or so. So I guess he was upset about not getting back on track after a humanitarian mission. And boy, did he know how to hold a grudge... Also, there was a comic oneliner here in Sweden during the war, just the one picture showing Vidkun Quisling outside the German government building in Berlin, trying to get past the guards to meet with Adolf. Saying "I'm Quisling!" And the German guard asking back "Okay, I can see you are one, but what is your name?"

Hey, THG, I've read a halfdozen comments below from people who lazily claim, without referring to verifible facts, actions, or setting and location of such deeds, that modern teachers in America would just roll over to spout and teach propaganda as instructed. Such people need pushback and should be made to defend their allegations, if they are able; declaring the state they live in and examples they've seen locally would be a good start, but for some commenters, backing up their assertions is too much work, too high a bar. I have two teachers in my family who have been pushing back and resisting against such mind control for decades, beginning with refusing to knuckle under to book bans.
